The Philippines, as with any Asian country, has had a long, hard history with certain aspects of its culture and values similar to other countries such as Japan and China. Many people from other countries made the Philippines their home bringing with them many new fighting styles, contributing to the culture and martial way of fighting with both steel and rattan weapons {kali}, and hand and foot fighting {Kuntaw}. In 1960, Carlito Lanada founded the International Kuntaw Federation to unify and organize Kuntaw practitioners around the world.
MarblePlayTV takes you to an inside look at Kuntaw Martial Arts - NY with Kyud Leon Simmons. Check out it.

This is modified shotokan. Kuntao really looks different. Lanada knows how to make folks look like fools.

Agreed - these movements look like bastardized versions of Sikaran's Baslankas combined with kara-te. The real Kuntawan Silat is completely different and relies on tri-circular motion and elaborate footwork patterns.

Thank for this video.. I realized I have kyuds in the US.. I was a practitioner of Kuntaw ng Pilipinas in Cebu. I became black belt during my college days in 1986 under our late Tatay Roger Requillo, my instructor.. He was under the teaching of Master Carlito Lanada your teacher also..Nowadays Kuntaw ng Pilipinas still reigning in the compititions in the Visayas regions, Philippines, under the teaching of Kyud Wilo sorry I forgot his fam name. Wilo and I both students of Tatay Roger. Sir, or I say Kyud, thank you for propagating our culture.. We really appreciate it.. Shout out to all kuntawnians under your teaching in the US, and anywhere kuntaw in the world..Long live Kuntaw!

Sir. i would like to make a friendly comment on this... we are brothers, we are happy we have kuntaw (Kuntao) in the US. this Video is partly correct. KUNTAO is actually a chinese martial arts, introduuced by chinese and malaysians to the people of Sulu and some areas in Mindanao. Kuntao is a chinese words, Kun and Tao. However the other term for it is Kungfu Martial Arts or Wushu. Kuntao became a filipino martial arts with the mixed of filipino form and Silat form as well as Karate kata. kuntao usually perform with tribal instruments like agong, kulintang. i had remember one LANGKA (Form, style or Kata in japanese) with song on it, it was called "Suwah ku Suwah" (Lemon my Lemon) in this Langka or form, the traditional wushu or kungfu style is obvious. Unfortunately the people of Sulu and Tawi-tawi did not preserve this Martial Arts, only very few know the traditional Kuntao. Im proud of you, Kudos to your Kuntaw Dojo... Peace!

You really need to research the kuntaw lineage.. It comes from a basis of matsumura shorinryu and the forms reflect that influence.. This history has been proven by research done by myself and others who have been involved with the art around clark ab (where I trained in the 70s) and the story has been proven to be false by instructors from that era.. There is a movement now within the Philippines martial community in country to get the title of being a filipino martial art removed due to its karate foundation.. I trained with the organization back when it was called kuntaw kungfu

Kuntao may have been influenced by Shorin Ryu as Okinawa is close to the Philippines. But not mostly based of Shorin Ryu. It is mostly of Karate, Silat, Wing Chun and Filipino mindset of anything goes. It has elements of mysticism of Silat that Shorin Ryu does not have.

@@blakwingz I can tell you after training and teaching this art for over 15 yrs, it is nothing more than modified shorinryu karate.. I had been involved with the kuntaw system illustrated in the video.. In the early 70s when I was training in it, we were named Maharlika Kuntaw Kungfu because we had open hand forms in it.. I left the Philippines to return two years later and it turned out that the open hand forms had been pretty much left in the dust and dropped because from what I was told by my immediate instructor and other senior instructors that they were dropped to make it more competitive like karate. After talking to senior instructors who knew the back ground of the Kuntaw system, it was found out that Lanada had trained at the old Budokan school in Manila and went out on his own. The old Budokan school was shorinryu and several well known instructors were said to have trained there over the years before going on their own paths.

It's not ancient Filipino martial atts, it's mix with karate. Kun is ftom chinese word of fist taw or tao is way, so how come it becomes ancient martial arts of the Philippines. Arniis, Kali, dumog, mano mano, are pure anncient Filipino martial arts.

halfhausaman, you are right. Carlito Lanada's "Kuntaw" is obviously NOT KunTao and it certainly isn't REAL FMA. It's obviously Okinawan Karate appropriated by Filipinos (namely Lanada) and given Filipino titles. Even the outfits are not Filipino outfits but Karate gis. The whole pull-back-the-fist-to-the-hip is NOT an FMA tactic AT ALL. It' something seen in Karate. But to those who think we're lying...don't take our words for it. Look at video clips of unarmed tactics in REAL Filipino FMA -- Dekiti Tirsia, Pekiti Tirsia, LaCoste-Inosanto, Ilustrisimo, Bahad Zu'bu, Lightning Scienfitic Arnis, Inayan, BahalaNa, Bakbakan......look at the unarmed aspects of ANY of these systems and YOU tell me if they move REMOTELY like these "kuntaw" guys. NO. Now look at video clips of people practicing Goju Ryu, Uechi Ryu and Shorin Ryu (Okinawan Karate) and YOU TELL ME what it looks like. Enough said. I was born in Peru. If you saw me in Lima practicing Tae Kwon Do with a Korean - like Gi and I told you it was the ancient Inca fighting system of Manco Capac that has been passed down through generatios and blah blah blah bullshit...because I had given the system a bunch of crazy Quechua names, that still wouldn't change the fact that I was full of shit. Sure, I could be a great Tae Kwon Do guy but to call it something else would be a scam. I'm sorry, but sometimes the truth is bitter.

Definitely not legitimate FMA. This is actually pretty common in the Philippines, unfortunately; Karate and Taekwondo got their hooks into the MA scene and this is the result. A lot of Filipinos have never even seen authentic fma, and many of the masters are dying of old age. :/

What you are seeing here -- what Carlito Lanada spread as "Kuntao" or "Kuntaw" is a LIE. It's KARATE with a different name. Look at the rear-fist-on-the-hip structure. Where do you find that? Chinese, Okinawan, Japanese and traditional Korean arts. Where do you NOT find it? In Filipino, Moro, Indonesian and traditional Malay arts. Kuntao is the Chinese-Indo-Malay (and by extension, Chinese-Filipino) set of combatives. Those systems do NOT have the rear fist set on the hip. Look up "Kuntao" on youtube and find some REAL Kuntao -- Chris Derbaum, Willem Reeders, Willem De Thouars, etc. You will NOT see that rear-fist-on-the-hip structure. Seriously, as if the KARATE UNIFORMS with the KARATE BELTS didn't give it away, look at the structure...it's all Karate. This poor dude's been had.
