UPDATE: The alum mixture should be 1/4 Cup to 1.1 Quart of water, instead of the ratio listed in the video. United Art and Education Original Art Project: Learn how to create beautiful marbled artwork with carrageenan.
WOW.... This IS the BEST Video I have ever seen on this subject... and believe me, I have been watching many videos for the past few days... "Thank YOU" so much for sharing this great tutorial... ;)
thanks for this video! My problem is the carageenan sticks to the paper when I pull it out the bath. Ive got a pretty thick coat of carageenan stuck to my paper.
Oh, how disappointing! This shouldn’t happen as long you used distilled water, mixed the carrageenan in with a blender and let it sit overnight. After treating your paper with alum (and letting it dry), the remaining film of carrageenan should be very thin and easily washed off with a quick rinse.
Do we have to use Alum. Alum sizing makes the paper acidic which makes it non archival. It is causing countless books in libraries around the world to literally crumble into dust. Their must be a neutral ph alternative. Fantastic tutorial, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all.
Thank you, Kenny! Creating marbled papers in this method is for craft purposes and is not archival. For our project, we found alum as a mordant is necessary in order for the design to transfer from the water to the paper without getting washed away or running when you lift or rinse the paper. Forms of marbling such as Japanese suminagashi use plain water with no mordant, and very stable forms of ink. Of course, it all depends on the kind of paper you use, as well. We can offer this kit as an additive-free alternative: www.unitednow.com/aitoh-boku-undo-suminagashi-innovation-marbling-kit
@@UnitedArtAndEd Thank you for your reply. I love your art video projects as they are simple to understand and fun for young and old alike to do during this difficult time. God bless you, Ken UK.
Thank you for this tutorial! I have been experimenting with a few different brands of paint and been getting poor results. I will try again this weekend and follow your directions. Why is it important to use distilled water?
Thanks for your comment! We've never tried it on leather. It's probably in need of some experimentation on your part. Acrylics may not color the leather the way you want it to, and yet if you use special leather dyes, they may not float on top to get the marbling effect.
No, it does not have to be. The most important thing about working with carrageenan is to make sure it it well mixed and sits overnight. It doesn't work right away like Methocel would.
Poupon Crazy Cat... We meet again... (great minds think alight!) I was just think the same question... ;) ... I just saw a RU-vid video on Marbling with Silk, but I can't remember which one it was... Put it up top in the bar... and see what you get... I think I have the notes too... It is very similar to this.
I wonder if you can marbleize on acrylic paint as well using Silk? I work a lot with Satin Silk and I like it just the same. I will try this with it, soon.. thanks and let you all know of this, even you Judi.
It is a common gelling ingredient but Doctors are warning it can cause bloatedness and other nasties in some people. Did you know that traditional Gelatin was made by rendering down animal cartilage with ingredients such as Cow heel. Carageenan is a simple extract from red seaweed, so it's vegetarian really, you would think it would be healthy, but lots of far more toxic compounds can be found in common edible fruits and vegetables.
