Here's a stunning performance of the Jacques Brel classic, JACKY, by UK singer MARC ALMOND, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1993. (From the video TWELVE YEARS OF TEARS)
I remember buying this live concert on VHS back in mid 90’s . I loved it & played it so much I wore it out !! Jacques Brel & Marc Almond are a perfect fit ❤
Marc is fantastic, I saw him in Dublic last February and he had the audience in the palm of his hand...the man could walk on water...see him live, you won't forget it.
for what it's worth, i am not a mad MA fan, i don't particularly like cabaret or camp, but i can appreciate brel. i can however appreciate talent, and this is marvellous. as someone else said on an earlier post, it IS different to the original, but almond's respect of brel is obvious, and this is a great performance.
First time I have seen this song performed by Marc Almond. Thanks for posting. Really enjoyed it. I imagine if you were at the venue it would of been electrifying !!!
We'll just have to agree to disagree... I posted it because I think the arrangement is BRILLIANT - esp. as it was done at a time when virtually no other pop or rock act would dare to do anything this 'cabaret' inspired! His TENEMENT SYMPHONY album is a classic.
How can anyone say he mudered this song? Personally I think he nailed it! Marc has a fabulous voice...trust me, all of you critics can't sing half as well as Marc.
I'm flying from Texas to England in December to see Marc on my birthday... I've seen him once solo and once with Soft Cell... and this song is one of the main reasons for the trans-atlantic trek. There's no way he can do a 30-year revue w/out Jacky
I disagree completely - Marc Almond has a completely unique style and JACKY suits him to a T. I don't think he ever sang better than at this TWELVE YEARS OF TEARS concert - and remember, this is 1993, YEARS before the dreaded Autotune could make even the Spice Girls sound like they could hold a note!
I like Marc. He has exceptional charisma. Great voice helps too. :P But he's more a vaudeville artist than a popsinger. Las Vegas would have been perfect.
Well this is one of my all time favourites. Ok Jacques Brel may not have done it in this way. But what is the point of making a copy. Take Mariah Carey. She shouldn't have attempted All By Myself, unless she had something new to add to it.....If you know what I mean.
---This might be a kind of "Variete " or so maybe people like it because of the performance and the half naked dance woman---- But : this has really nothing to do with B R E L and his intentions and his art and so on.. this is abuse....
Strongly disagree....what is the point of parroting Jacques (whom I love). Brel made it his own (which of course it was), Scott Walker did the same with his great version (golden liquid baritone doesn't hurt), and now Marc sort of takes it to the extreme. Brel is one of my all-time favorites (esp Amsterdam, Les Bonbons, Jef, Fils De, Au Suivant, etc.), and this is pretty far from Jacques (at that time! who knows what he would do today!), but Marc's commitment, charisma, talent, AND respect for JB/SW allows him to pull it off.
