This is a fascinating analysis of the ancient city. I had no idea of their social structure like individuals had no rights, and they knew their absolute place in society and therefore knew their purpose. This is a gem of an idea.

grass isn't always greener. being led by fascists and living in ignorance can be dim existence. Also they were hungry, and life was all about survival every day then. no one cared as Marc said. They would kill , loot, rape if they needed to. Not exactly a gem for society.

Abosolutely love this. I came to the same conclusion, but through studying esoteric religions and ancient pre-christian cults directly which had led to Christianity/Monotheism (I just had a phase where I had to know!). The key word of Culture is, after all, "cult". Haha. But I also agree that we now have fractured, weakened, less vitriolic forms of cultism now.

I work at an elite (Ivy League) university and by virtue of my job (I'm not a faculty member) I talk and work with world-class scholars from across the disciplines, something more rare than you might imagine if you don't work in such environments. While trained as an experimentalist, I'm also interested in philosophy, especially philosophy or knowledge and of science and epistemology. I'm also interested in the sociology and anthropology of science. If you simultaneously delve into a variety of disciplines/disciplinary cultures and step back from any given one and consider the full range of scholarly disciplines without value judgement, it is impossible to accept such a list of books as anything but the very limited opinion of one person on a bread of topics it is impossible for any one person to be deeply knowledgeable about. Even if one is, one only knows the current state of scholarship outside one's field. Rarely, if ever, at its most fundamental will you find consensus in any academic domain (e.g. the status of "string theory" as even a viable theory). And, these fields are frequently undergoing paradigm shifts. What's the shelf life of this knowledge then? If there is no consensus at a deep level and fields are in constant flux, how can one outsider to such fields imagine they have it figured out? If they do, their are either ignorant or megalomaniacal. More fundamentally, why should we assume that humans are able to understand a universe that precedes the evolution of its cognitive apparatus by billions or years or the incredible complexity of even one context, culture or community? Making money in that world and having a true, accurate and comprehensive understanding of that world are utterly different things.

Exactly what I was thinking. How Marc had an entire worldview based on the research of one man who could either be a) dead wrong or b) lying for fun or profit is kinda crazy. My guess is more life was a lot more like living off grid in the country is today. Probably just have a family, maybe small village, and you just farm and work fields and raise family and then die. Nothing too crazy.

Yeah and I’m guessing there was a lot of “village justice” back in the day. Like the Wild West forming a posse in places that had no laws or weren’t in the jurisdiction of states. Villagers and townsfolk kinda passed their own judgement if you trampled the rights of others for personal gain. We always think humans were stupid 5000 years ago and that we are way smarter. Probably not true at all. Maybe we know more science, but doesn’t mean we had more common sense or ingenuity.

i just see that as part of the evolutionary process. It was the beginning of collectivization. As a collective we've evolved over time. Improved upon it. Have come to understand people should have rights, that we should pursue progress, that we should organize as a society to take care of ourselves. one thing with a right leaning disposition fail to understand is collective action, that we can mentally and emotionally organize to carry out large scale objectives, that through a diplomatic process we can will ourselves towards ends, that there can be more than individualized civilization, we can exist in collectivized civilization. for important things it's beneficial to exist in collective. things like climate, safety, health, I don't think covid scientists or climate scientists are claiming to have all the perfect answers, they're just saying observations to support the collective call to our collective wellbeing. When people don't recognize collective there can be a tendency to break down into irrational views. Behave in irrational ways. Collective existence, collectivism, adhering to the collective, keeps up sane, and functioning towards a healthy lifestyle, towards our well being, by caring about the well being of others we're receiving care about our well being. supporting each other, and creating a more emotionally whole existence.

After watching this clip where they bring up the book "The Ancient City". It compelled me to read it myself. It's a fascinating book, presenting perspectives that feel quite foreign to someone like me, who was raised in a predominantly secular culture and society in Sweden. One aspect that particularly interests me when delving into books like "The Ancient City" is their typical neglect of the 'why' behind the use of religion. I have always perceived religion as a construct intentionally created and orchestrated by a small group of individuals. These people, in my view, weren't themselves 'religious' per se, but they recognized the utility of crafting religion as a tool to guide societies, enforce social norms, and promote cohesion. Interestingly, despite having a wealth of direct sources for his book, the author, Numa, does not seem to consider this perspective. “Cult” in the book's perspective is more connected to culture than the negative connotations often associated with it in contemporary language.

@@tookie36 Sometimes you need to see the world as it really is rather than how you want it to be. People have this idea that values and morality can be taught, that education is the answer. As if the thief or the murderer commits crimes because he/she doesn't KNOW it's wrong. That's naive beyond belief. No, sometimes great men must understand pathology and criminality. Sometimes great men must not look at the world through rose tinted glasses but through cold hard realism. Perhaps worst of all, sometimes humane men must be inhumane. Just look at the likes of Lee Kuan Yew.

Super interesting but I'm suspicious of that Ancient City book. There were plenty of civilisations, small and larger scale that weren't run as the cults he depicts here, or at least they did have concepts of individual rights. However if he believes we're still running around in cults now then perhaps he also views them as cults. I'm talking civilisations in Asia, SE Asia, Australia, the Americas, Africa

because it doesn't matter. it would be like referencing a civilisation on another planet and arguing it had any effect on todays world; the book is about how western (and now largely global) civilisation came to be. not eastern, african, oriental, the americas etc. edit: and actually the book does reference indian civilsation.
