“Black News Tonight” reported on a decision by the Westfield School District in New Jersey to place a high school American studies course on hold.
The reason was that the curriculum includes novelist Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye.” On Nov. 24, Marc Lamont Hill spoke to local reporter Matt Kadosh and asked him why the push back against this particular book, and if there was more to the picture that people don’t know about.
Author Brad Schaeffer, who is a parent of a Westfield student, joins Hill on “Black News Tonight” to discuss why he’s against the way race is being taught.
All this and more on “Black News Tonight.”

No. That's history. Like it or not the country in which you currently live (although you are free to leave it at any time) was founded by white males. Sorry, that's not racism, that is just a fact. The majority of whom were NOT slaveholders (some like Franklin were vocal abolitionists even). Being taught about these men is not whitewashing history, any more than learning about Shakah Zulu is blackwashing Zulu history or the Tokugawas asianwashing Japanese history. . And I recall in the history classes I took learning about great women, great blacks, great Indian chiefs, great immigrants who did great things in this country. So I don't know what history class you took. I think you are looking for a fiction class. History doesn't work that way. . As for disregarding...here are a few things I was never taught in history class. Did you know that without the complicity and cooperation of African tribal chieftains the slave trade to the New World would have been pretty much impossible? Did you ever learn how guilty of perpetrating this African slave trade other Africans were? Of course not. Did you learn that Native Americans routinely raided other tribes, burning their village, slaughtering their men and boys and herding away their women into slavery? That they tortured and committed mass execution? That the great "horse culture of the plains" was only a thing because Europeans introduced the horse to North America? Did you learn about the Rape of Nanking? The brutality of the Sino-Japanese wars? In short, the myriad of sins committed by ALL races in ALL continents? Of course not. That might hurt feelings. . I couldn't care less if you're not listening anymore. You haven't for generations and the collapse of the black underclass is testament to that. So don't listen. Keep yourself down and blame others. All it does is give me one less person to compete with in this world. By all means, be the KKK's useful idiot.

The problem isn’t that you didn’t read it all. It’s that you couldn’t come up with an example from any of the books that was racist. What do I mean by conservative view on race: Left: (CRT) All inequality that blacks face today, economic, social, educational, etc. are the by-product of systemic racism and thus it is with the white race where the guilt for their plight can be found. Right: There has certainly been racism over the decades no doubt and slavery was an abomination. But the Civil Rights Act is 56 years old. Two generations. In that time has America become more or less racist? Have blacks had more or less opportunity to succeed? So what is holding them back? Maybe it has more to do with 72% out-of-wedlock births and with it all the pathologies that prevent a cohort from succeeding, and schools that pump out illiterates, not mention they keep voting for the party that has turned once thriving cities into war zones. That is what two sides look like. You think any kids in these classes will even get a whiff of the second notion?

I am from Northern Ireland. For years and years both sides Catholics and Protestants were told there were differences were told the other side was the enemy etc. What resulted was 30 years of both sides slaughtering one another. Pro-rata the casualties to the US population today saw 750,000 dead (this is a pro rata figure). The more you point to differences between people (in Northern Ireland it was religion) the more you highlight this the more you fix differences in people's heads. @@mikeaskme3530 Correct it was all white on white violence ... this said it was very easy to know who was who - surnames, first names, where they lived - society became pretty close to fully segregated. If you were of the wrong "religion" in an area - death threats, burnings and physical assault was the methods used by both sides to "purify" the area. Mixed marriages more or less died off. I am a Catholic (so obviously bias to some extents) but the Catholics were the "Black Americans" i.e. the oppressed - loads of data to prove same. We had our civil rights marches and the other side responded with police brutality and latter the British Army who actively and systematically targeted Catholic areas. These areas gave massive popular support to the IRA who fought back by killing and murdering the police, the army and "other side". The "other" side organised and equipped their own "death squads", and the violence spiralled out of control. The similarities between Northern Ireland and the current move in the US towards identifying people as oppressed and oppressors is striking. What I am trying to say is the road "of oppressed and oppressor" logical conclusion is what happened in Northern Ireland (from 1969 to 1998). In actual usage, a better definition would be "non-Japanese" since Japanese people will use it in reference to non-Japanese even when they themselves are the foreigners in a country other than Japan. . 2.From Japanese, literarily meaning " outsider". A derogatory and ethnocentric term used to describe a foreigner in Japan that has round eyes. Other East Asians are not referred as " gaijin". Although its meaning especially since the end of World War II has had a more banal implication. . 3.A Non-Japanese person with round eyes, anywhere in the world. . But yes. Brad wants a conservative author as part of the study but how can them speak to the history of color. In other words, what does Thomas Sowell’s message based on self reliance, the free market, and personal responsibility have to do with the origins of race in this example? To my knowledge, Thomas Sowell discusses how we should overcome racism and society’s social constructs, not the history that brought about those constructs. I believe this is true of all his conservative examples? Than what can conservative authors like Thomas Sowell, Candice Owens, and/or Clarence Thomas bring to the discussion that introduces racial history. Neither Booker T Washington does not have a voice on origins of racism. These classes attempts to teach that all “colors” have value and contribute to our society. I believe they should address the historical American argument that skin color has innate positive and negative characteristics as erroneous and harmful and see these age appropriate books as a means to do so through examining the origins of race. This conversation reminds me of the quote “To the privileged, equality feels like oppression.” Brad does say that he is not against the idea of teaching Americas dark history. But I believe he would like that history to be modeled as “lost cause” narratives where oppressors are seen as heroes and reasonable based on the objective and reason for their oppression. It seems to me, that that type of narrative is dangerous because students do not examine the root cause of our dark history and therefore more incline to repeat it if it comes back in another package. The main thesis of teaching this history at any level needs to be that these behaviors and actions were wrong and argue that all races are equal, capable, and citizens of our great nation. I believe these books do that.

This guy's sole purpose was not to ask if the information (presented in various literature) is valid and true. No, he wants a counterbalance, made by a black person. This must be done to undermine a narrative that is correct. This must be done so racist points (White Nationalist perspectives), The Daughters of the Confederacy 2.0 can be heard through the mouths of modern day Clarence Thomas types. The book burning wannabes do not want to deeply dive into the content. They want a black individual who will refrain from describing the common horrors of slavery, manipulating of voting rights, etc. They need a black clergy archetype to demand, "the black man help himself." They need that black mouthpiece to say no that Caucasian creation is not the matrix. That Caucasians are without blemish. You can miss me with that Insanity. Gaslighting, fallacious adventures, and misdirection is this man's game. They always pontificate why linger in the past? As if this has not been a continuous struggle to be merely seen as human. Conservatives, and Republicans=the party of White Nationalist want blacks to concede power and linger in the question, "is our collective problems us withholding parts of life, are we settling for less?" Every time there is a conversation about the veracity of history (within public institutions) we are met with White Privilege, and the demand that we compromise. Compromise so they can continue formulating the narrative, and forcing us to financially and politically concede power. Power we need claimed...because many Blacks turn over their power, and refuse to be on code!

The Democrats are no diffrent my friend, I agree with alot of what you speak. The Democrats do not get a pass either, black people in America willingly give their power away to this political system based off false promises and utter lies. It's quite sickening actually, it's so funny to me how one will ever expect an oppressor will teach you the truth and expose themselves for the sake of "fairness", where do they do that at never in history have I seen that or heard of that. Well I guess it's back to the decades old way of doing things of just preying and voting and hoping for the best. The more and more I here and listen to theses "debates", I keep going back to brotha Malcolm's speech "The Ballot or the Bullet". The profound nature of that speech and relevance of it still today just touches my spirit to the core. I just wish my people knew how to flex their power. PTSS (Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome) is a real thing.

Brad said: "The history of this country has been the history of people if different races trying to get along as best they can; but it doesn't always work." Which is true except for the large number of yte people who passed laws and fostered a culture to ensure that only yte people succeeded at a higher level. His overtaking is very telling. He doesn't want Marc to state the argument that will torpedo Brad's ability to respond. Brad's whole argument can seemingly be summed up to "there isn't a conservative spin on racism, one that doesn't make it seem that bad...because it really wasn't". One day this topic won't be an argument, because we'll all have accepted the facts and actually moved past it. Until those outliers stop acting like babies when the hear the truths of the past; we'll probably remain in this viscous circle. 'Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. Overtalking was due to a one-second delay. Get it straight. Actually if I was in the KKK in 1960, I'd take off the robe, put on a business suit, and lobby for liberal policies if I wanted Blacks to fail. The Democrat party did what the KKK never could just by passing the Welfare State and subsidizing single motherhood. Unless you think all the Democrat-run inner cities today are in better shape than they were 50 years ago? If so which one. You vote for the very party that destroys you. From the outside looking in it is illogical and self-destructive. They play you every time, and laugh about it at the M Street cocktail parties. (You think Nancy Pelosi or Schumer give two shits about George Floyd? They'd be the first to call the cops if he showed up in their all white gated communities. They USED him. And you let them) And you keep voting for them like turkeys voting every November for another Thanksgiving. But keep thinking conservatives like Sowell and Thomas are the "evil ones'. Democrats need you angry. Because they know they have nothing policy-wise to give you. And you fall for it every election. It's called being a "useful idiot." Well done. Funny you quote Santayana. You guys repeat history every time you vote Democrat en masse. I think there's another more apropos saying: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and yet expecting a different result." Einstein. (I think?)

@@bradschaeffer5736 you know what you are correct if you were in the 1960 in a Klan robe you may be a democrat, but you would not get "blacks" to fall for your BS, because "blacks" voted republican up until the mid 60s, and the final passage of the last Civil rights act. But the process began early with Theodore Roosevelt and push to more progressive ideology. Before Teddy republicans believed in a strong central government and throughout the early 1900s, after Teddy, you start to see a realignment, and it solidified after the last Civil rights act. So you are correct on the taking of the robe thing, but incorrect in getting the "black" votes. On a off topic notion, why is it that you think "blacks" are incapable of making their decisions in what is best for them? I love how you brought democrat cities into the conversation, lets look at republican ran states, last in education for all its citizens white and black, last in economic opportunity for white and black, last in health care outcomes for white and black. So why do white people in these states vote against their best interest, I could make broad assumptions like you, but I would prefer to keep the conversation civil, I will be waiting for your reply if you dare?

I've watched three videos back-to-back by Marc Lamont & his tactics are the same in each: he invites a guest to talk about (X) but Marc diverts the guest onto some other point (Y) & when the guest attempts to come back to the point (X) - why he was brought on the show supposedly - Marc then shouts him down always bringing him back to other thing (Y). AND WE NEVER GET TO HEAR AN IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF (X) !!! It appears that Marc has NO genuine interest in what his guests actually have to say or what their concerns might be or what things may be done to actually resolve their concerns. All he is interested in is 'scoring ideological points.' If you're a 'woke' Radical Leftist, it'll make you feel good, a real stroke to your ego, assuring you that all your conclusions are based on solid ground & there is no need to question any of your own assumptions. But if you're interested in not just 'scoring points for your team' but a civil conversation where the emotional temperature is one of respect & humility, where one's IDEAS stand or fall upon the validity of one's argument, you'll need to change the channel. You will learn little to nothing here on this one. (P.S. - - in case you didn't hear it over all of Marc's screaming at his guest, the man said "what privilege are you modeling by talking to me?") What I did learn here is that the Westfield curriculum is unbalanced. When you have 14 books all framing race issues in a similar way with NO countervailing viewpoint, that isn't education that is indoctrination. It must be ideological indoctrination, otherwise they wouldn't try to foist it upon 5-year-old children who haven't the mental acuity to withstand it. And to think these types of things are being done out of a sense of 'compassion' & to make race-relations better, is really ironic.
