Katrina Marzella performs Sonata in F Major by Benedetto Marcello. Originally for Cello, this beautiful transcription by Steven Mead features baritone horn as the soloist. This live performance, dating from August 2016, took place in Queensbury Baptist Church and also features Andrea Price on piano. Katrina and Andrea are both members of Black Dyke Band, also originating from Queensbury.

Beautiful performance! I played this on Baritone as part of my 2nd year assessment for a BA (Music) c.1996 and as a solo competition work. Bass clef reading came as a rude shock after a life of brass band playing ;)

I have been listening to you on RU-vid for a couple of days. For five years I played 2nd baritone in a British brass band here in the US, and turning in my Besson silver plated baritone when I quit was very hard to do. Your sound exemplifies what I appreciate about the baritone's difference from the euphonium, the difference between a singer's chest voice amd head voice, and I am enjoying hearing you very much.

This and other solos by Ms Marzella should cause a huge increase in the demand for baritone solos, for baritone horns and for baritone seats in brass bands.

turnitback she is inspirational. I was all set to switch to euphonium until I heard her play and now I don't think I ever want to play anything other than my baritone.

Very well played, lovely tone throughout. As I understand it, the baritone horn has a cylindrical bore whereas the euphonium has a conical bore. Is that the only difference between the two ?

Late reply, but baritone has more of a bass tenor horn sound, whereas euphonium is a tenor tuba sound if that makes any since

Performed beautifully, what tempo did you play the 2nd movement at?

As a grade 8 clarinet player but only a grade 5 Euphonium player starting to learn this piece - honestly unless you play the euphonium you cannot appreciate just how brilliant this playing really is. Stunning.

It's a nice academic performance. But where's the real Italian baroque interpretation?! And the wonderful English brass-bandy vibrato just doesn't work here. And yes, I'm in my second-year masters in trombone performance, have played this sonata and also play baritone horn/euphonium and every other conceivable brass instrument at a professional level. Katrina, don't get me wrong, you do a wonderful job playing and promoting the baritone horn, but you still have a ways to learn musically! Other than that, love you in every respect!

You probably wouldn't appreciate what I do using either the baritone horn or the Eb tenor horn for busking!

If she didn’t want it to sound like a brass band she would’ve played a cello. You aren’t granting yourself any ethos by listing any credentials, you are making yourself look disrespectful. If you respect her performance why put it down?

Why don't you go ahead and post your recording of this piece then?
