Full NBC broadcast of the March 1981 contest featuring the top ranked and undefeated Oregon State Beavers at the UCLA Bruins from Pauley Pavilion. The announcers for the game were Dick Enberg and Gary Thompson.
@@chrismalloy7960 They must have been a pretty high seed in the tournament that year. I was real young in '81, and don't recall much about that year's tourney, except that President Reagan got shot on the day of the championship game between Indiana and NC.
They were upset in the first round that year IIRC by a Lamar Cardinals team from Beaumont. The Lamar Coach was Billy Tubbs, a Jack Nicholson lookalike who guided The Oklahoma Sooners later on to a National Championship game against Kansas. Oddly enough, that Jayhawk team starring Danny Manning was Coached by former UCLA Coach Larry Brown!😂😏🎤🐻🏀B.W.
Was he any good in the NBA, I don't recall hearing his name in the NBA that much at all. Must have flown under my radar, I guess I followed too umch of Sampson
He had a mediocre 10 year career averaging 11 pts & 5 rebs per game. Johnson was an oddity who was a great fg percentage shooter but was only a career 63% ft shooter. He still may have the all time fg percentage in college.
Thanks for this upload!! I was all but 10 years old when this game went down. My birthday was a couple of weeks before this game and my parents got me a subscription to Sports Illustrated. I don't remember what I had for breakfast today, but those first few issues of SI I got, the covers to this day are seared into my head. I can still see the cover when K State beat OSU in the tourney!! Anyway, thanks for the post as I really never watched this team play.

Your collection and recent uploads from 1981 are amazing. Thanks for sharing. Do you have any NCAA tournament games from 1981? Ie. Oregon State vs. Kansas State? Happy Thanksgiving
Thanks. I just added a batch of games from that era but no NCAA tournament games are among them. It looks like there is a 1981 Oregon State vs USC game so I will post that at some point down the line. Enjoy the holiday!
It made no difference if Oregon State and DePaul had made it to the final four because neither team would've come close to beating my Hoosiers. IU found their rhythm just in time for the tournament and steamrolled everyone. Besides the UCLA teams under Wooden, it was rare for a team to dominate each game in the tournament.
Billy Packer and Al McGuire were in Lexington, Kentucky that day calling the Kentucky/LSU game with Bob Costas. The gentleman calling the game with Dick Enberg, Gary Thompson played his basketball at Iowa State, called the Saturday Big Eight Game of the Week on NBC with Jay Randolph and called some split national games with Don Criqui as well.
UCLA had been in previous NCAA Final Four. Lost Championship Game to Louisville. Kiki VanDeWeghe. Larry Brown. Went on to coach Danny and Miracles at Kansas.
I've posted a couple of Marquette games from the 1980's but I don't have any broadcasts of them from the 1970's. One of my uploads "1970 Converse basketball review" does open with good footage of the Warriors winning the NIT vs St. John's at MSG.
I'm sorry I don't. If you are a UCLA fan hopefully you have, or will check out, the extensive uploads I recently added of the Bruins 1980 NCAA tournament run.
The resolution of the picture on this video couldn't be worse, if a coke bottle had been used for a lens. And what a deal, you not only have to dodge the commercials from the original program, but also those that RU-vid puts up.
@stevemcdonald1033 Congratulations! This upload has had over 15,000 views and you are the first one to complain. It actually is a good deal though because no one forced you to watch any of it and you don't have to watch any of the other non HD quality forty plus year old college basketball broadcasts that have been posted.
Cry harder waww touch the doll and tell us where the HD hurt you. Most people back then had to listen to this game on the Radio N btw I did was out cutting firewood w my dad I was 14
