Timestamps: 00:32 Stuka444 - Any chance of a big match in the US this year from you guys? 01:51 Thomas S - What is your favourite meal to make? 02:32 Cameron W - As Vaccines become more available, what aspect of "normal" do you most anticipate? 03:55 Philip W - Is there a shelf life for Polymer firearms? 04:54 Jordan - If the US military allowed Winchester to revise the design of a levergun to their specifications, do you think it would have been adopted as a standard issue rifle? 05:58 Craig S - Thoughts on the new upcoming Zastava M90? 06:57 Rumblestrip (?) - Is the 7.5 BRNO cartridge one that would make a PCC actually useful, potential analogue to the M1 carbine? and Jamie B - Do you think the use of the 7.5 FK in firearms like an SMG or a PDW would add new advantages to the class of weapon? 08:23 T3 Jost (?) - Other than just bringing people and showing them youtube videos, how can we grow interest in action challenge and brutality match formats? 10:22 Tyler H - Now that you've had some time using the E-tint control MS-1s on the clock, what is your opinion of them so far? 11:38 DarkPR0 - How much can a shooting jacket and trousers improve someones scores in the expert to master categories of highpower competitions? 13:20 London Jolly - How difficult would you say the NFA transfer process is, and do you have any plans to look at micron kits? 15:08 Matt G - I know he's extremely busy on his own channel, but Ian's been pretty scarce on here lately. Is he a regular member of the InRangeTV crew or is he more of a guest collaborator at this point? 16:34 John H - Given that most civilian self-defence shootings happen at very close range and might involve physical contact and shooting through clothing, isn't a revolver a better choice than a semi-auto in many ways? 18:43 Dandy Echo - Why do you think the Confederacy did not try to continue a guerilla campaign against the Union? 19:43 Michael W - Are thumb external safeties on stryker fired pistols obsolescent or are they designed for a specific carry position like appendix that reduce the risk of AD? 21:15 Matt G - Ignoring any potential legal issues or whether anyone would actually want to buy one, is there any technical reason you couldn't make a smokeless powder muzzle loader? 22:07 Seth G - How much of a handicap does the magazine placement and the bad trigger of the Desert Tech MDR make vs an AR-15 on the clock? 23:52 Space Cowboy from New Jersey - If one were to make a western following the common tropes of the genre but set in the modern day, could it still be qualified to be a western? Whats the most modern timeperiod before it's not a western anymore? 24:46 John W - If the logistics were feasible, would you ever open a training school for competition shooting? 25:59 Vercingetorix - Having worked in information technology for several years, you've likely been a part of several projects. What in your opinion seperates a good project manager from a bad project manager? 27:30 Peter H - What kind of facemask were you wearing in the vaccine selfie and using during match footage for the BLK LBL Bipod MDR video and does it work for high intensity activities? 29:10 John K - If you could talk to any one old west gunslinger, which would it be? 29:54 Michael O - If you were running a 4 week bootcamp for general service recruits of which two weeks were dedicated towards weapon training, would it be one week rifle and one week pistol or two weeks rifle only? 30:31 Alec M - Do you do much reloading these days, and if so is it something you enjoy doing? 31:38 John A - Is the wandering zero of a pencilbarrel AR when hot a selfcorrecting problem by letting the rifle cool, or is there cumulative damage other than to the rifling? 33:28 Echie T (?) - Got an opinion on the 612 shotgun? 34:40 Robert S - How does fire correction at your matches "hit", "to your right" and so on match actual battlefield experience which you seem to try to emulate by imposing time- and physical stress on shooters? 36:46 Nate - What are some of the things that surprised you in the process of making the WWSD2020 into a commercial product? 38:51 Jared L - Are you a fan of any major US team sports, and if so what are your favourite teams? 39:09 BlueJay - Alot of people live in states and countries with strange and bizarre firearms restrictions, would you consider running an experiment to see how much something like a gripfin and ten round mags would hamper you in a match environment? 39:59 Bracket - Did you ever consider a non-standard magazine for the WWSD project? 40:50 Aaron K - What are your thoughts on a LPVO scope paired with an offset red dot sight? Gimmick or legit? 41:55 Nick H - Why has 7.62x54R survived as a military cartridge for over a century without replacement? 43:04 Chase C - Is it still worthwhile to buy a modern handgun for defensive use if it is not set up for a red dot? 44:12 Luk - In your video about the FS2000 fieldstripping you were listing three bullpups that have merits, the Steyr AUG was not one of them. Why is it not on your list? 45:43 Jacob M - Do you have any recommendations for "old west" sightseeing within driving distance of Phoenix? 47:31 Kaness Latrons (??) - When using old west guns and gear in 2-gun, is there an appreciable advantage to having a cartridge like .45? 48:16 Timo G - Airguns or .22s are great practice for even an advanced marksman, do you practice with either one regularly? 49:20 Yuri R - In The Last of the Mohicans the movie, Hawkeye is seen loading his rifle with silk patches, claiming it adds forty yards. Is there any substance to this? 51:09 Rebecca F - Do you have advice for someone wanting to make historical videos like you do, any pitfalls or tricks etc? 52:46 Phase - What is the most "sciencefictiony" gun-related technology you think we'll actually have within the next 10 years? 53:23 Khan H - Which cartridge handled the transition to smokeless powder better? 45/70, 45 colt, 44/40 or perhaps another one? 55:26 Seth N - You clearly avoid using profanity, even in situations that clearly warrant it. Do you have a philosophy on potty language? 56:30 Jose Hey Soup (?) - What do you think a current day fighting lever-action should consist of? 57:39 Philip K - Is the forgotten warrior T-shirt line discontinued? I remember there were plans once.

Your active push to reevaluate previous conclusions and accept when reality is fuzzy or doesn't match up to existing ideas is honestly the best part of this channel. There's a difference between approaching things emotionally and approaching things with emotional intelligence, and you do the latter. 👍

Had an additional thought: Thanks to this video I'm now imagining a lever action carbine in .45 using 30 round glock mags*, an integral suppressor, and a red dot. I can't imagine that exact specification would come around, but it's fun to think about. The fact that it would be a manual action would potentially make it especially quiet. *No experience with those particular mags so maybe they're garbage? No idea.

Your surroundings are so perfectly representative of the current situation in the US. We are under a self imposed isolation (some more than others) due to the pandemic. We are politically balkanized if not isolated. We tend toward selective exposure in our media content further cementing our biases in the absence of personal interactions that might challenge them. The best thing about the recent Kasardization of In Range is the one stop eclecticism of the content. Karl is broad and deep in his firearms knowledge and I learn from that. He couples that with socially challenging para firearms content that conventional “gun channels” won’t touch. Stay diverse and unpredictable Karl.

That’s basically the answer Max Popenker gave when asked that same question on Ian’s channel. At this point only the PKM and SVD still use the stuff in modern military service anymore anyways. Since those guns tend to work extremely well as is, there’s no real urgency to change to something rimless. There's a pair of air rifle disciplines called Hunter Field Target (HFT) and Field Target (FT) which are basically shooting small (15 - 35 mm) "kill zones" on silhouette (usually of small game - sometimes dragons etc) targets at unknown ranges out to 55 yards (45 for HFT where the rules add more challenge) in brush, between branches, up trees etc. You get one shot at each target, it's with a UK legal (sub 12 ftlb muzzle energy) air rifle, and it's outdoors in field conditions. I've learned so much about marksmanship shooting (H)FT - using a wimpy air rifle makes you read wind from environmental clues (grass, trees, smoke, the hang of the string that resets the target) and teaches you about holdovers and trigger control because you're really pushing the ballistic capability of that little pellet. A lot more fun than small bore precision shooting, and every bit as much a marksmanship challenge! Recommended - especially for those in the UK.

The aspect of most “precision sports” (to borrow RU-vid’s PC category term) that I find frustrating is that they all seem to devolve into a money trap if you want to do them consistently. The one highpower “match” (it was termed a “fun shoot”) that I went to I took my Ruger American and some M80 ball just to see what I could do. I got 20 rounds into ~4 MOA at 600 yards, which met my expectations; but I felt like I got a very chilly reception for not having “correct” gun and gear there. I’d do biathlon, but the club here in Anchorage is very “any gun as long as it’s Anschutz”, and I don’t wanna pay $3000+ for a one trick pony. I think 2/3 gun around here may be still accepting of “unorthodox” participants, but I haven’t tried yet due to not being able to source or afford bulk non magnetic ammo (they’re protective of their steel targets).
@panfriedmarmot
@panfriedmarmot 3 года назад
@@509Gman 2 gun is already such a redheaded stepchild in shooting sports and with Karl and Ian making it more popular and encouraging people to be 'unorthodox' I am sure they will be the most accepting. Wish I could say for sure from experience but the only 2 gun around here is pistol and PCC because their range isn't that long for intermediate or full power rifle and I don't have a PCC yet. As far as affordable ammo, tho its kind of hard right now because of the primer and powder shortage, reloading might be your best bet once the shortages are done. You can get to Wolf level cost per round or lower very easily and its a fun hobby in itself.

I've been wanting a bullpup for years. Ideally i wanted an F2000, but they're hard to come by and after seeing all your info on the MDR, i decided to pick one up with a 6.5CM kit as well as the 5.56 kit. Now it's a race to see what i get first, the MDR, or the LaRue Stealth barrel to finish my AR build... On the hot barrel question: I've read a report "Rifle Accuracy Facts" which did a study on barrel heating. The author found that yes the barrel returns to the same location, but also found that if you heat the barrel up a lot (by firing many rounds in rapid succession) and allow it to cool, the deviation from heating that barrel up after will be less. The reasoning behind this is that a cold barrel is under some stress for its position but as you heat it up the material "relaxes". Get the barrel hot enough and the steel will release the stress so then the stress will impact POI less.

Friendly neighborhood metallurgist poking my head in for the old school or improperly heat treated Pencil barrel: Thermal Cycling of metal will, EVENTUALLY, either stress relieve the barrel, or at least change the heat treatment of the barrel. HOWEVER, unless you do something goofy like shoot 5 rounds rapid fire every 30 seconds for...like 5 days or something crazy, you're going to wear out the barrel before the thermal cycling shows any negative impact on the base metal. Also, if you get the barrel hot, (like irresponsibly hot, think almost to the point of blowing the gas tube) and then dunk it in water, VERY BAD THINGS can occur, or *occasionally* you can actually fix the stress relief problem. But generally this will cause more problems. In general, for pencil barrels, if you wouldn't trust the mfg or their QC process, don't get a pencil barrel from them. (Same goes for 9310 bolts, but that's a whole different rant).

For the Army in basic (at least when went through in '08) 2 weeks of basic was dedicated just to rifle marksmanship and 1 more week of "other weapon familiarization" (is, M240, M249, AT4, etc). USAF, USSF, and Navy i can say only do a brief few day familiarization. USMC and USCG are the only ones I'm not too sure about for what they do. After basic your MOS (job in the malitary) will dictate how much more you go over and train with your weapon.
@brianingram2068
@brianingram2068 3 года назад
And if you deployed with the Army, you know only officers and some senior NCOs received a pistol as their assigned weapon. In the spirit of "you're not actually fighting, but directing others to fight. You get a pistol in case your position is overrun, and need to defend yourself at close range." I can say the Navy only issued a handgun to someone when they had a particular job (watch post, ship security) that dictated having a sidearm. From my experience there, the requirement is simply to fire a minimum score in a familiarization course to say "you're qualified." Training with a handgun when I was in the Navy was done on my own time, at a range I found, and at my own expense.

For a modernized lever action rifle I could see a Winchester model 1895 with detachable magazine's being a hard combo to beat if you modded it to use BAR, BREN or Fal magazine's. It's still a losing battle using lever or bolt action rifles in the 21st century.

@@johanrunfeldt7174 There are a ton of volume and cross section issues in play, (much worse with the 7.62 or 303 suggestions Johan made), and various ways and material strength issues to do the toggle lock that Karl specifically listed. You can do a 1895 or 92/94 which have the less slick actions and they're inherently stronger and have less to worry about in critical volume. And removing the lifter makes the space easier to work with. There are at least two sweet spots in there depending on how big you want your cartridge, and keeping smooth actions. Is this commercially viable as a major production gun?... shrug. Would small volume somewhat higher price with some hand fitting and DMLS or machined vs volume production and cast or MIM or the like be viable? ...

I beg to differ with Karl. I asked the question about the Desert Tech MDR because I bought one. The stock trigger is not good. It is heavy and creepy. It may be great in comparison to other bullpups, but I would say it is equivalent to a mediocre mil spec AR. That being said, I just received an aftermarket trigger from Jard that is excellent. It is expensive, at about $300, but it is comparable to the LaRue Tactical trigger I have in my AR, plus it is adjustable. Joe Bob says check it out.

Having been a Safety Officer for IDPA/IPSC, trigger safeties scare the crap out of me... it's common for a shooter shirt to come un-tucked and for the shooter to then start to stuff their pistol into their holster along with their shirt... A trigger safety makes this a dangerous situation. Apparent some police departments require external safeties because of negligent discharges caused by drawstrings on jackets getting into holsters. Holstering a live sidearm is the most likely time for something to go wrong, and trigger safeties only make it worse So basically what I'm saying is 1911s RULE! (don't hurt me).

Savage made a muzzleloader that used smokeless powder for a bit until enough people did stupid things and blew up their guns. A lot of modern blackpowder guns are made out of good steel that "could" handle smokeless (but aren't designed for it, so the manufacturers don't know the limits and will advise you not to use it). Blackpowder is forgivable to an extent, you can push very high loads in a modern inline muzzleloader. If you try to push the limits and use too much smokeless, it will go kaboom just like hot handloads.

For several years Savage did produce smokeless powder muzzleloaders, a couple custom builders still do. The reasons they have fallen by the wayside for the most part are 2 fold, one they are quite expensive and two many states don't allow them during muzzleloader only hunting seasons. This places them in direct competition with conventional cartridge firing rifles which they will never completely match in terms of performance or speed for a follow up shot.

I think not accepting detachable magazines is part of what makes lever guns so handy, no accessories to fiddle with just a bandolier or pocket full of ammo. Henry makes mag fed rifle cartridge lever actions, maybe one of those could be modified to accept AR mags, they already take optics and free float handguards.

Would really make the receiver awkward to have a magazine hanging down in front of your lever. Would have to a long receiver, or make the lever throw a lot shorter to not interfere with the magazine.
@derekp2674
@derekp2674 3 года назад
@@jimyeats There would be some challenges for inventors. To accommodate a Winchester style lever with a longish throw, clearance for the magazine might also be introduced by side or top mounting the magazine (FG42 or Bren style) or by bullpupping the design. But none of those options would allow the use of a slightly modified AR15 receiver. This may explain why straight pull AR's are generally used in the UK.
@jimyeats
@jimyeats 3 года назад
@@derekp2674 True, but at that point you are completely negating the handy, short, and slimline profile of the lever gun. While I applaud any fun or new guns, I don't think this one would be for me.
@derekp2674
@derekp2674 3 года назад
@@jimyeats Indeed, it seems the Winchester 95 and more recent 88 models are hard to beat for design elegance. Here in the UK, necessity can be the mother of invention, because semi auto centrefire rifles are prohibited. Hence some shooters have straight pull AR's. As a former BSA Martini user, I'd never rule out the option of an underlever rifle. But I agree they do want to be elegant. From that basis, if I did return to shooting, I think I would be reluctant to buy either a straight pull AR or a Long Barrelled Pistol.
