There's not a lot of extant material on the net of WFAN from the 1050 era (1987-88). This is 40 plus minutes of Pete Franklin in March 1988 (following a Mets spring training game). Franklin, an acerbic host from Cleveland was supposed to be the big star of the new sports radio station but New York audiences reacted negatively to him and he was gone after just two years, to be ultimately replaced by the phenom that was Mike and the Mad Dog. Ed Coleman, still with the station today as the Mets beat reporter does the update. Notice also how FAN back in these early days insisted on giving us a full-blown news update as well with a story on Jack Kemp dropping out of the 1988 Presidential race.

The usage of Mutual actualities in the news update was no doubt a legacy of predecessor WHN.

Yes, that makes sense. And obviously once they moved down to 660 there wasn't any more need to do any newscasts.

Pete will always be my favorite sports-talk host. It's too bad he didn't catch on with the New York crowd. Does anyone know the song he played at the end of his show? He would finish by saying, "Mr. Riddle" before going to his theme. Thanks.

When Pete was in Cleveland, he outwardly detested New York (especially the Yankees), I think in contrast to the Cleveland sports scene, he never really had his heart in New York sports..... So unlike in Cleveland, Pete tried to conduct his New York show on personality alone, and that just wouldn't fly..... In retrospect, with Pete's inimical dislike for New York while in Cleveland, I though his career move to the big city was really bizarre........

WOW Pete Franklin. He was a crazy host. He wasn't that good on WFAN. Pete was great when he was the sports radio host in Cleveland in the 80s. I remember he would always start screaming at the callers if they said something Pete didn't like

Between Cleveland and New York, Pete had a heart attack and a quintuple bypass surgery. I think he was physically and mentally enervated while in the Big Apple. He was not the same guy, and his taste and judgment were not as good as in Cleveland. He left for retirement in San Diego, got stronger, and made a nice comeback with KNBR San Francisco. FYI: Chris Berman, Larry King, and David Letterman all praised him during his salad days in Cleveland.

Even if he hadn't had his heart attack I don't think he was ever going to connect simply because he wasn't "one of us". NY audiences basically don't embrace a host who doesn't have a background in the area to draw from.

That's probably true. Although Pete was a native of Massachusetts, and spoke with a distinct eastern dialect. Also, WWWE Cleveland was a 50,000 watt blaster that took calls from 38 states. Many from NY/NJ. Pete also was the first media person to produce an NFL draft preview, and the first to feature a very young Mel Kiper. Pete was ahead of his time, and a good man.

More than anything, the frequent amount of commercials and the sports updates adversely affected the continuity of Pete's show in New York. When Pete was on 3WE in Cleveland, he would sometimes talk to a caller for 20 minutes before taking a commercial break. Pete understandably never felt comfortable with WFANs format. When Pete was in Cleveland, I've never heard anyone host a sports talk show as well as he did. Pete's knowledge was incredible. Not just about the Cleveland teams. He also was very entertaining. He was a must listen.

Ahead of his time. Treated all like shit. That traffic report could be yesterday, Ed was on today, he still knows nothing.
