A history of the Whitemoor Marshalling Yards at March in Cambridgeshire. At one point during World war Two these were the biggest Marshalling Yards in Europe. The video was recorded in 1992 and includes many interviews with the men who worked in the yards. Hump Shunting was used to sort the wagons into trains for London, East Anglia and the North. Re edited with improved sound.

A wonderful tribute to my favourite trainspotting location in the 1950s, just ahead of Rugby where the Great Central crossed the West Coast main line. I cycled there from Stamford, sometimes with friends and other times on my own. We always had a shed visit where the shed master would always arrange for a driver to take us around, Plenty of Kops. What a variety of engines, some from Stratford in the south and others from the North East. What a variety of traffic from long passenger trains to long goods trains carrying loads of every type, especially farming products in season which pushed the railway to the limit. Then the new big standard Britannia class class arrived to really top it all. What wonderful and happy days and such friendly railwaymen who really loved the railway, were proud of March and welcomed those of us who share that feeling.

I first met Peter Wright around 1972, when my local WH SMITHS closed, and I had to get my OS maps from him, I met Gordon Southwell and Fred Clark back in 1974, I read today, they plan to relay a track into the former Platform 1 at March Station soon. if true...

Coming from Peterborough I used to travel to Match to play football. I didn't see enough of the railways in March.

So enjoyed this film , have a great affection for March, my grandad worked on the railway as a guard , Walter Scarff if anyone remembers him lived down Estover was a friend and neighbor to Ben Gimbert , my mums best friend was Joyce, Bens daughter so we know the story of Ben’s courageous actions that day. Fate is a strange thing but at the time my dad was a fireman and was supposed to be on that fated train but was unwell so he swapped shifts , now I’m just realising that James Nightall must have been the fireman (correct me if I’m wrong ) Dad moved on into farming and we left March in around 1949/50 When I was a small child I have such memories of the night time sounds from the marshalling yards heard from my grandparents house , the squealing of metal on metal, the crashing sounds as wagons hit the buffers , such happy memories ❤

Yes I spent many happy days at whitemoor yards it's a crying shame it's gone plus the closing of the march to Spalding line could be a main freight line avoiding Peterborough

Can anyone relate the storey of the March “Whiskey Galore” episode.? I was told this some time go but, alas, cannot recall the date and details. It would be great if someone would post a RU-vid about this please! Without, of course, admitting any involvement!

@Nigel Saunders I have rechecked the video and miraculously I now have audio , not sure what happened 😮 I used the link from Facebook whether that made a glitch I don’t know but all is ok . Look forward to rewatching this instead of skimming through it.

WE spend too much time wallowing in the past, in this country. Why is it still waste ground?

It’s not! They reopened some of it as a materials handling and recycling yard and then gave the rest over to a prison.
