Morels are arguably the most popular and sought-after edible mushroom in the springtime, maybe of all time. They often pop up after the cold soil warms up to around 50° and the conditions are just right. Areas where there was a forest fire the previous year seem to be for the highest concentrations can be found, and although a dangerous and unforgiving habitat, it can yield lots of delicious mushrooms when the conditions are right. I decided to head out to a small forest fire that happened in 2023 to see what might be popping up in March of 2024, which is really early to be hoping to see morels. We were completely surprised by this trip and happy to report we had good luck in the lowlands of Western Washington in March! What an awesome way to start the spring foraging season. Watch this video to get good tips, habitat, and great entertainment here on Mushroom Wonderland.
Burn Morels in the Pacific Northwest are typically limited to 4 different species- Morchella sextelata, Morchella tomentosa, Morchella exima, and Morchella exuberans. I believe the ones found in this video are M. sextelata, but its tough to know for sure without DNA sequencing. I am going to get these on the microscope to see if i can find microscopic differences, and I'll edit this comment to reflect what I find.

We will not accept any responsibility for negligence or accidental ingestion of poisonous mushrooms or plants. These videos are not intended to be a definitive field guide, but rather a starting point to become familiar with habitat, Everyone is encouraged to do their own studies, acquire literature or internet resources to safely and confidently identify wild foods before they eat them. When eating a new wild mushroom, it is advised to start with only a small amount, and make sure that it is fresh and that it is cooked thoroughly. Some mushrooms do not agree with certain individuals, and this is typically discovered on a case-by-case basis. Even the most edible of mushrooms contain compounds that can be tough for the human digestive tract to handle. Some “edible” species have small amounts of certain toxins that will easily break down with cooking. Fungi contains a molecule known as chitin that is the same thing that makes the exoskeleton of shellfish so hard, and cannot be broken down by the human digestive system, so it is another good reason to thoroughly cook mushrooms. All the ideas expressed in the comments should be taken with a large grain of salt. I don’t think there is any other field of study or science that has more misinformation being shared so freely and boldly. Mushroom Wonderland and Aaron himself have no opinion and neither encourage nor discourage the use of mushrooms containing mind-altering compounds. These mushrooms contain powerful chemicals and should be treated with a high level of responsibility. Any video topics on the habitat, natural distribution, and morphological features of psychoactive mushrooms portrayed on this channel are purely for scientific and educational purposes.

We were hiking in McKenzie Pass in Oregon this weekend - mostly near the river (1200ft Elevation). There was a burn there a few years ago and the area is still recovering. I didn't see any Morels. Highs were in the 60's and lows in the low 40's. I did see a few birds nest, LBMs, and various tree fungi but nothing much yet.

What is it about a burn that causes Morels to fruit heavily? Does it free op nutrients for the mushrooms, or do the trees send out a distress call to the mycelium requesting help in the form of minerals and water needed to regrow the forest? And why dont the morels absorb things from the soot and charcoal that would make them taste like charred wood?
@mushroomwonderland1
@mushroomwonderland1 2 месяца назад
That's quite a few questions, and the first consideration is that it's somewhat unknown as to why they fruit so heavily from the burn. Could have something to do on a mycorrhizal level, but also maybe because the soil has been conditioned from the fire to what morels really like. It could be perhaps the fungi has been living underground or even within the roots of the trees until the fire came, which signaled a distress call, and the fungi starts to produce fruiting bodies to spread their spores to new forest that are unburnt. I think they don't pick up the flavor, much like oyster mushrooms wouldn't pick up the flavor of wood, or button mushrooms wouldn't pick up the flavor of manure, because it breaks down those compounds to a molecular level and reorganizes them to create hyphae, So it's a completely different molecular being.

Hello! When would you say morel season starts in the cascades?
@mushroomwonderland1
@mushroomwonderland1 2 месяца назад
We usually find natural morels , Morchella snyderi, on the east side of the Cascades starting around the second week of May. The higher elevation means colder soil temperatures, which morels tend to prefer 50° soil for a week before they start to fruit. That's why, as the summer goes on, the morels go higher and higher in elevation. By August they can be found at 7,000 plus feet.
