March Madness Final - EVH Stealth 100 vs Engl Savage 120 MKII 

I tried to listen to this without looking at the video, and I can conclude that I still prefer the Savage. It sits better in a mix, doesn't have that annoying nasal twang of the EVH and ultimately doesn't require a boost to sound good. In saying that I feel the Stealth has better gain structure for palm mutes (at least in this state of tune/config). But then again everyone is hearing this same video differently since we all have different speakers delivering the final product to our ears. All we can say is a massive thank you to you Jarrod for putting the time, blood and sweat into this series.

Both amps have their own amazing voices. I personally leaned toward the Savage being it's a lot crispier and sits on top of the mix a little more. Great job J-Rod!!!

I have the Savage taking the top spot but the Stealth is very close. Even though the Savage runs $500 more the extra features make up for it (MIDI, 2 FX Loops, 4 channels vs 3, power switch on the front). It would be cool if the Savage came with a footswitch but I can easily just use MIDI for those functions. I do like that the Stealth includes a footswitch and has contacts on the back for biasing the tubes.

Both sounded amazing. I prefer the Engl ever so slightly but that Stealth was ridiculous as well. I bet these two split hard left and right in a mix would be unparalleled! Do it! 🤘🏻

Engl's just have that richness, tightness, and clarity that is unmatched to my ears.

Theres something special with the Stealth! everything sounds just right! massive ,agressive and clean!

1st riff: Stealth. 2nd/3rd riffs: Savage. I really think the Savage (and Engls in general) shine on songs/riffs where the amp needs a a fast response (ie faster riffing). The faster notes are compressed the right amount, and jump out/cut through in an articulate way. On the slower chuggy first riff I think that the Stealth sounded bigger and laid down that thick foundation better. I love all amplifiers...I couldn't ever just choose a "best" one. That being said: between these two, on this specific video, with these specific riffs, I choose the Savage

Stealth had a very special more clear great sound the definition was better.. For live playing through PA for 5000 I thing the Stealth is very special. The Engl sound great I actually have 2 Powerball IIs being shipped now for Backline business as Im post this. I do own the EVH 5150 III Stealth 100 and am looking forward to playing the Engl Powerball II to see if It will top the Stealth to use live. Wishing all players the best as we all search for the best sound we can get.

Something about the articulation on a strummed chord through the EVH stealth that gave me chills. ENGL Savage is, IMO the best amp ENGL makes. Savage profile in my Kemper lives up to its name. It one of my most played profiled,, top 10. But I have to be honest, I do prefer the stealth in this video. It's just so brutal,, yet detailed and complex with chords, but still raw on chugs. Strange combination , awesome.

It’s crazy how good Stealth is!

Love both of these amps. I know what I want my ears to say but I can remove that and just listen. So wow EVH consistently cut the mix so good. The savage at the start sounded like for whatever the reason needed a little more something. Probably could be dialed in But whatever the case is The Stealth absolutely sounded 3d and wide with tons of definition throughout. By the End the Savage caught up will see once I cast my vote!

Jarrod the Engl with the six string sounded incredible ! What pickup is in that guitar ?

The Engl definitely has a more prominent and refined sounding mid range. It seems like it cuts through the mix better than the the stealth without being too "honky". I think the savage could be a more versatile amp overall... I give it to the Engl. Both sound great. Cab makes more of a tonal difference than the head anyway. I would be happy with either tone. Great comp!

I also have to concur with others observations- I really enjoyed hearing you on the six string.

That is a real challenge😮. Both are totallyl beasts. I think the Engl is a tad closer to my taste( not better than the stealth). Anyway, Jarrod thnx for the series, I found it really enjoyable. I hope you'll continue with something similar.

Wow! Very close but to me the Engl was more refined even without the boost edged out the Stealth. Very close and both are excellent amps and deserve a place at the top. Pick your poison, you can't go wrong with either. Thanks Jarrod!

I placed an order for a new Savage 120 a few days ago. Can’t wait! I’ve had the Stealth and it is amazing. Also had Mesa Dual and Triple Rectifiers, Peavey 6505+, Laney Ironheart, many Marshalls. Super excited about the ENGL. I had a Fireball about ten years ago but my skills weren’t developed enough to really get the most out of it, but I still loved it.

I made a post before on this topic and picked Stealth but now I own the Engl Savage MKII 120 and Engl Fireball 100 and I have been touring with Stealth 100s and 5150III 100 for maybe 15 plus years and now I just retired them as I am touring with Fireball. I am now full ENGL

The best choice is to GET BOTH!!!! And so I did! I have to confess that after months playing both I enjoy more the Savage, is very comfortable to use with the Midi pedal, besides the clean is way much pristine to that of the EVH. Using both lead channels, I like the clarity and definition of the Savage, I use it without OD pedal. The EVH needs an OD pedal and it is more difficult to process in the mix. The Savage is so easy to record and further process. At this level of amps, both are high amazing! At the end of the day, is about your taste of what you want to craft.

Both are great amps, you couldn,t go wrong either way. Stealth wins by a nose.

ENGL for me! Both are great.. I like darker amps and smoother amps. The EVH has a high end sheen. No Diezel or Revv?

This was a tough one. I give a slight nod to the Savage. By a hair. Both of these are class amps. Great job on this whole series!

Two top dog type amps. They’re so good it almost doesn’t matter which you choose, they’ll both do what you want.

Overall the stealth takes it for me but I will admit the engl savage won without the od running somewhat surprised by that it was a awesome shootout thanks for doing this for everyone 🤘👌🤘

EVH stealth is definitely smoother. Nowadays i prefer that. Maybe because I'm getting older 🤷‍♂️

6:58+ I like the Engl more through these passages! I like the pick attack and high end better. But I like pick attack that claws your face and bright highs that will give your listener a haircut. It's probably down to taste, but I'm just loving the Savage.

I meant to ask you. Why didn't your Revv make it to the end? I know it's one of your favorites. I love my EVH, but I don't play it as much as my Revv.

I now have a week with my new Savage 120 and holy shit! Wow. The Stealth is a fantastic amplifier, had one. No weak spots with the EVH but the ENGL just has something more. The versatility is insane and the tones are thick, crushing and extremely articulate. I’m blown away, and I’ve had high gain amps including the EVH Stealth and base 5150iii, Mesa Dual and Triple Rectifiers, Laney Ironheart, Peavey 6505+, Blackstar Series One 100, Orange Rockerverb, a slew of modern and vintage Marshalls, and the Savage 120 is just more special. Absolutely love it. I got the ENGL 412 cab with it and was surprised that it sounds better than my Mesa oversized 412. I find myself playing longer, better, and more explorative with the ENGL. It just sounds so damn good!

You know, the Savage is an amp I've wanted but I play a lot of Van Halen, classic rock and grunge, not just metal. You guys think it does those tones well enough?

My Stealth 100 arrives tomorrow... Can't wait to spend some time with this Amp.... Also, have you ever tried a Laney IronHeart 120? Would be a cool amp to see on your show.

There is a punch, and a dark one, from the Stealth that I dig. What I like about the Engl is this hollow bucket-like oomph in the low mids. it just gives this tube tone more naturally for me.

Def the EVH stealth for me. Its got that punch in the chest feeling I like, and I love 5150's so I might be biased. Can't wait to get my 50w stealth 6l6 in the future.

I'm not digging the top end of the savage. Bit too grainy for me. Also the EVH seems to have more character in the lows and mids. Stealth for me.

They’re both great, but I think the Engle is just a little bit better overall but they’re both great

Engl sounds clearer but more boxy if that makes sense (listen to it not in the mix). I’d have to say it’s a tie.

Engl for top end, Stealth for low end.

I actually like them both equally. The ENGL has better build-quality. Both amps are way too expensive for me.
