"Marcha Real" was recognized in 1770 by Carlos III Bourbon as a official anthem of Spain. This melody didn't have official words for a long time. Over the years, steps have been taken to create the text for the anthem. In 1908, during the reign of King Alfonso XIII, one of the first texts was written. In 1931, after the introduction of the republic, the anthem was changed to "Himno de Riego". In 1939, after taking power by Francisco Franco, the monarchist anthem was restored, but with a much different text, which was used until 1975. After the restoration of the monarchy, it was decided to return the version without words, because the previous text was associated with the Francoist regime.
