"Baile" by Argentinian composer Francisco Colasanto. A piece for contrabass clarinet and electronic sounds (2004). It was a great challenge to perform this wonderful piece.

I'm curious: where do you read Cb? This contrabass clarinet is a standard Bb - and the piece is written in Bb as well...

That would be a contralto clarinet in Eb, half way in between bass and contrabass.

Yes, when you have heard or played multiphonics on contrabass clarinet, the equivalent on other instruments really sound flat...

How nice it is to hear something refreshing like this! Its nice to see that there are people in the world who aren't constricted by genre, 'traditional' functions of instruments, I read through the comments on this vid, for the most they are positive, thats great. To find new music I search and contact composer via internet, and sometimes I get lucky. Check the website contrabassclarinetDOTorg and I use for the contrabass clarinet: vandoren reeds N° 2 1/2, but I will also recommend you plastic reeds, they work very fine! Thanks for watching.

The contrabass clarinet can reach the lowest Bb of a piano - one note before the final A! If I tune this contra very low(extending its neck) I can reach the last note of the piano. And...there is an Octocontrabass clarinet (!), which plays one octave lower than a piano! Thanks for your comment.

If the performer is familiar with flutter tongue, slap tongue, circular breathing and some improvisation skill, then this piece is not hard at all. You can download the score from the composer's website and see for yourself. This work is very idiomatic for the contrabass clarinet. Good practising!

I read that contrabass sax goes down to low concert Db. If this is true, the contrabass clarinet goes still a minor third lower - the lowest Bb on the piano!. Any contrabass sax players around to help with this question?

I appreciate your comments. I won't discuss here what has "more musical sense", since we all have different perception in each piece of music. But I agree: the contrabass clarinet can do way better!

It may not be true,but I agre that this sounds mostly as synrix said.I bet ya could play some really catchy and creepy tunes with that instrument. I think the alien machinery did such sound in the movie War of the Worlds and it sounded fuckin awesome.

Woohoo! Another bass clarinetist!! First of all, to get a straight Bb contrabass, which is the most common model, that plays written low Eb (sounding lowest Db on the piano) would cost around $2500, no joke. About the same as a professional Bb bass clarinet. Now, there are the shorter BBb contrabass clarinets that actually wrap around in loops, and the bell ends up at the top, and those get a low C (written), or low concert Bb (lowest black key on a piano), and those go for at least $10,000.

What is it that comes between a bass clarinet and the contrabass? I played once what I thought was a contrabass, but it wasn't near that big. I played bass clarinet for four years in HS. What I played was about, oh, five feet high, or five and a half, about as tall as me.

There are only 3 octocontraltos that exist in LeBlanc's collection, the fourth one was sold for a very steep price, as you can imagine. However, there is still only one octocontrabass, yes.

If you go to LeBlanc's website, you can order a simple "student model" contrabass. I wouldn't recommend it, because if you're going to get one, it's worth going for the full range.

Well, close... There were only 4 octocontra-altos made, and only 1 octocontrabass made, all by Leblanc. Last I heard, they are in Mr. Leblanc's personal collection.

But I play both bass and contrabass and both are be written in treble. It can reach notes that are equal to very high notes on a Bass clef.

This is so awesome. I love how you brought out the percussive quality in the contrabass. I played a paperclip model back in high school. What size reed do you use? I used Vandoren 4s. Also, where would I get the sheet music for this? I may not have my own contrabass, but I do have a bass, and I'd love to do this for my senior recital - if they'll let me play outside the Bb soprano! I think I'd be a first for the university if they allowed it.

What the f? Seriously, is there one good RU-vid clip where someone actually plays the contrabass clarinet amazingly well? It's either people just learning to play the instrument (and good on them), or these goddamn contemp. pieces, 3/4 of which is just key fluttering. Between this and clips of the contrabass flute, I literally just watched 20 clips of people fluttering their keys. Totally uninspiring. Please, someone post something accessible and showcasing of the range of this instrument
