Bear in mind that while China and Philippines are territorial rivals (or rather, Philippines is a victim of China's territorial ambitions). The two are still major economic trade partners. To severe diplomatic ties could result in severing trade as well. China will definitely be able to weather such collapse but this will harm the Philippines quite significantly. Not an "economic collapse" as the other guy said, cause Philippines can actually mitigate and find workarounds for this but, it'll definitely hurt. And a lot of Filipinos are just not in a position to weather this "hurt".
