Dr. Marcus Borg is a New Testament scholar, theologian and author. He received his D. Phil. from Oxford University.
READ: I don't agree with Dr. Borg on everything, but I think he offers some great insights here on the panentheistic view of God.

I don't get it. Grew up Christian here. Went to Christian school. Top student. Studied theology. Read lots of biblical scholars works. Read biblical historians works. Sounds like Borg is just stretching the word reality to mean god just so he can keep saying god. So he points to the fabric of reality and says that's god look. Well that's reality. His mystical experiences, we know that's all chemicals in the brain. You can get that going with awe like the sublime movement with people heading to the alps, electromagnets on the skull can create these experiences, kundalini yoga can do this. We know this is a phenomenon of the mind. Why add things that have no basis in what we can know. It's obvious it's just an interpretation of the experience rooted in ignorance of what's really going on.
@ben-dr3wf
@ben-dr3wf 5 лет назад
@@bottosrob what you speak is also chemicals in the brain. Does it make it just a phenomena of the mind?
@bottosrob
@bottosrob 5 лет назад
ben what the kundalini yoga, the feeling of awe in the alps, and electromagnets? Yes that’s ways to produce these mystical experiences. Depending on what religion you are will effect your experience. You could see Ganesh, Alah, Batman, Horus or God. Just depends on what’s already in your mind.
@ben-dr3wf
@ben-dr3wf 5 лет назад
@@bottosrob There is no conclusion on the nature of consciousness. Your suggestion is that spiritual experiences are just manifestations of a purely physical phenomena due to chemical reactions. That doesn't get us anywhere. Infact chemical changes are modes through which spiritual manifestations happen. Man has to go beyond (or shed) his physical and mental reality to experience the spiritual reality. My point is, to say spiritual reality or experiences are products of chemical changes is either avoiding or misleading its causal explanation. Same as saying I got angry at my mom, because there was chemical reaction in my brain, or my anger is a phenomena of my mind.
@bottosrob
@bottosrob 5 лет назад
ben I hear you buddy. I did get mad at my mom because the chenilles in my brain. My mom is real, I am real, and the situation is real. We know that and can record it. There’s no meta added in top so bad example but I get what your saying. So we are having experiences in all cultures with all different exercises. What is going on? Is Ganesha real because a Hindu had an experience and felt and saw him? That was the most true experience he ever felt. How about all the others? Do they all exist? It could be that the spirit world exists. That’s 1 explanation. It could also be true that our psychology is tricking us in ways. That we can test for. And we have. And we have found our psychology does trick us. The problem is if you only read and learn about these things from the christians you’ll never hear of these things. One thing our minds do is projection of human traits onto nature and objects. “That door bit me” “ the river is angry”. When you hear a thunder storm that’s incredibly violent you naturally feel a social interpretation of it. Which would be someone yelling and swinging. But that’s an error in cognition. Next thing would be pattern recognition. We know this gets us into trouble everywhere in life. The catchers fallacy in the courtroom. Gambling. It’s the one place rats can out perform us. We see patterns in things that aren’t patterns. Like the man on the moon. Or a cloud that looks like a dog. I can go on but that’s because I was curious as to what is the truth. Sure the hallucination May be a God but it defiantly is some other things that science has figured out. Take the experience and subtract what science knows and if your left with anything it’s either “the god of the gaps” or it’s god. But we have to try and debunk ourselves or we will remain as a child. When I was a child I thought like a child, now I am a man.

The point of Christianity isn’t to cultivate virtue and be the best you you can be, but to love God. Every other moral virtue will follow. The point isn’t to be hard-nosed and follow the law to the last letter, but to love God. If we did that, then we would be unwittingly following the law. I’m not one to get tied up in the nature of God’s justice (mainly because I don’t really know what to believe with respect to the “nature” of God - if He even has one), but this one seems pretty clear. “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. In Christianity we view the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as the closest representation of God which can be understood by us in human terms. It's revealing that Borg makes no reference to Jesus in his talk. He even used John 3:16, "God so loved the world..." but dispensed with the conclusion of the sentence, "...that he gave his only son." Rather, Borg develops his understanding from his own mind, experiences and philosophy.

Once you take away gods consciousness, it's not really a god in my opinion. it's science. And i don't think the universe was created, most likely has always been. And if there was a conscious god, i don't think he created the universe out of nothing, he would have created it out of itself.

It seems to me that M. Borg is presenting us with false alternatives. The language about God's love, grace, and compassion and about God's wrath, judgement and condemnation are both essential. We need both kinds of language- not one to the exclusion of the other. What would God's forgiveness mean if there was no possibility of wrath, i.e., God's displeasure? Marcus Borg wants a "nice" religion; I would much rather have a religion of "love", which is simultaneously deeply compassionate and deeply challenging. I don't want a religion that basically says, "you're fine as you are". I want to be told that I can be much better- a saint even.

Marcus Borg oversimplifies a complex issue. He says: "A form of Christianity that believes in hell basically sees God as punitive". That is a ridiculous oversimplification. Christians who believe in hell do so- generally speaking- not because they believe God is punitive, as M. Borg suggests- but because they believe in human freedom. If I am free to accept or reject God then my rejecting God is what we call hell- i.e., that separation from the source of all goodness, truth and beauty, and to be separated from this source is like being separated from a source of clean water. It is not God who separates from us but we who separate from him.

He seemed to forget the simple fact that if God exists, and if He created us, then it is He who sets the laws and rules of reality. You may not like that arrangement but it’s the hand we were dealt and now we have to do our best with it. To me, Borg wanted to find a version of God that was acceptable to him and so he ends up almost seeming uncomfortable talking about God. Den Brodie You can experience God for yourself if you want to. Go alone into the seclusion and privacy of your own bedroom, and humbly and sincerely ask God what His plan for you is. God bless.

CharlesPhoenix i have read the bible many times and ask every believer that i can. but if i wasnt raised with a god belief and still dont believe yet. how can i ask something that i have no reason to believe exists for guildance? can i just pretend and that is good enough? or do i actually have to believe before i can believe.

God is either personal or impersonal. In the former case we have RELIGION's God; in the latter, PHILOSOPHY's God (in the Middle Ages the Philosopher is often regarded as Mystic). It is only with XX c. existentialism that we are called to understand RELIGION's God in terms of PHILOSOPHY's God--to replace RELIGION with a new "religious philosophy". Modern "philosophy of religion" arises this way. Many Christians take this path, not realizing that it is first disclosed by anti-Christian "atheists" (most notably Nietzsche and Heidegger).

This has much of the same tone, color and language of a good old fashioned college dorm room bull session-after a good 2 or 3 solid bong hits of course. Very Sad. And pretty much dead on arrival as a means to living because it’s isn’t The Truth.

This is an intellectual cocktail of rehashed universalist description of pantheism. Nothing new and certainly not inspiring or biblically accurate. I went to Marcus Borgs final lecture before he retired and chatted with him. A pleasant gentleman lost in his own intellectual pursuit of God.

I find in these hollow, pedantic ramblings no deep understanding of either what he is criticizing or what he is proposing. I also find contemptible his attempt to use the mystical tradition within Christianity as a way to undermine the Christian tradition. What Borg has done, in essence, is advocate a type of Vedanta philosophy which has jettisoned the Hindu verbiage in favor of Christian verbiage. I have deep respect for all religious traditions, but this sort of syncretism-in my opinion-displays a lack of respect for the traditions it tries to fuse and confuse.

Not a syncretism. This kind of mystical experience and view of God is deeply found within all main denominations for Christianity, some very old. Nothing new, and he knows it.

So basically, invent your own God with your own qualities to feel good. Nice guy, but.....Elephants are shown to be true, and we don't have one God that we can point to as an example. Well, philosophy is limited when it comes to proving something objectively, as we know an Elephant exists. We see an Elephant, we don't see God, I really don't see it as an honest comparison.

On contraire, theistic vision of god is a heavy projection of humanities hopes and fears and it's much more primitive in scope. His panentheistic vision of god doesn't attach human characteristics to Him/It, and leaves much to mystery and direct experience which is permeated throughout all experiences. Mystery and immersion are much more humble way of approaching this topic than our projections and beliefs upon hypercosmic being and becoming.

2 Timothy 4:3 "For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away into myths." Sadly, this sounds like Borg to me.

But thats is exactly what i am saying! Of course Richard Dawkins can accept this kind of pantheism. That is, because that pantheism has no meaningful difference to atheism. Just two word for basically the same thing. Both of the affirm, that the ultimate reality is equivalent to the laws of nature. No propose, no love, no will.

Unscriputral idea. The Bible is clear. God is a Being Who is Personal and Real. He will punish those who are rebellious. The Bible clearly explains God this way.

I am disappointed in you, Bob, that you are posting videos of this ridiculous liberal theologian. Anyone who comes along to claim that they have discovered that the way Christ has been viewed for 2,000 years is wrong is a hack who can and should be ignored. Ah well, I can rest content that falsehood generally has a short shelf life. Dr. Borg's works will not be long remembered.

@@ObjectiveBob Let me put it another way, I discovered your channel when looking for lectures by the Orthodox theologian, James Cutsinger. Cutsinger was a traditionalist, so I assumed you were, and I guess I assumed wrong. Still, if you are into Cutsinger you must be at least aware of the traditionalist school of metaphysics of Frithjof Schuon and Rene Guenon. You would do well to read them, but of course they have nothing good to say about liberal Christianity. I am just surprised that someone who could on one hand post videos of a traditionalist like Cutsinger could then turn around and post videos of some absurd liberal like Borg. But perhaps I shouldn't be surprised as Schuon notes that such seemingly odd juxtapositions, such lack of discernment, are common in the modern world.
