What a beautiful and romantic scene. The actors play so well that you think they are really in love with each other. So covincing, Love is the most difficult part to play for a actor.
It's really interesting how he's comparing the women of Britain and Gaul to Lygia calling them barbarians and her beautiful, but he doesn't know she's from a foreign land very similar to theirs
those were real actors, all who lived in that century, in that years. The actors of classic cinema are the only true actors. In our current days the cinema sucks more everyday, it´s repulsive.
"Behold she stands with her hem hang loose, framed is her face in Golden traces reflecting the Milk White Beauty of her shoulders. So it was that Venus stood before Mars beckoning her lover. Nothing do I see that is not perfection." Is there any speech in cinema more romantic than this???? Never. I have watched this movie almost 100 times and never tire of it. I read the book cover to cover 3 times and loved the story even more. Everytime I speak to anyone Polish I always ask about this book because it was written by a Polish man and I wear all my Polish friends down because I assume they are all like Marcus. What A Great Story.
Marcus was not romantic though. Especially in the book. He was ruthless, selfish and abusive in his desire for her until he changed at the end. In the movie, he is less crazy, but still was very entitled and rude.
@@weloveTM123 You clearly didn't read my piece properly, I wrote that the speech is the most romantic piece I have ever heard in Cinema. I didn't state Marcus was romantic. This was a very well directed, produced and acted movie. The book is even more engaging and it would be good if we all read it, it's a Masterpiece.
this was and is a great movie.. this movie is 71 years old think of that. and in the future people will be watching a movie that is 200 years old and be on.
Originally, John Huston was to have directed Gregory Peck and Elizabeth Taylor in the lead roles before the right-wing Louis B. Mayer ditched Huston, Peck and Taylor because he thought the script was left-wing. I have no problem with Deborah Kerr, who was a great actress. But Robert Taylor is about as wooden as a Georgia pine.
@William Snyder. As much as I like Gregory Peck, but for me Robert Taylor is perfect as Marcus Vinicius. He looks like an ancient statue and acts convincingly - as I would imagine a proud Roman officer. I also like the contrast between Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr, something I would miss with G. Peck + E. Taylor.
@@cumuluscloud3854 Peck acted rings around Robert Taylor. Everyone thinks of Peck as Atticus Finch or the heroic military man in "12 O'Clock High," but he made King David real rather than holier than thou in "David and Bathsheba" and he had the versatility to play Captain Ahab in "Moby Dick" as well Josef Mengele in "The Boys From Brazil." When Taylor asked God to give Ursus strength to fight the bull in the arena, it seemed hollow and unconvincing.
