Our penultimate VLOG saw us traverse the Gulf of Thailand to dock at Phu My which is the main cruise port for Ho Chi Min City (Saigon). We took the opportunity to explore this city which featured in the news and movies of our youth. We took the Saigon on your own cruise excursion arranged by Tui.
It was a long journey from the port to the city, well over 2 hours. We were well briefed by the tour guide on how to safely navigate the city streets. That still didnt mean we avoided all problems and incidents. Our trip was affected early on when we witnessed a gruesome and horrific trafic accident. We hope he survived but suspect he didnt.
Once in the city exploring the busy streets was a test on nerve but we were able to see the main sights such as the Post Office, City Hall, Ho Chi Min Statue and Notre Dame Cathedral. The Ben Tanh market was excellent to explore and browse. We also found some very tasty food in a food court in one of the main shopping centres.
This was an experience ! We are glad we went and saw this place and hopefully this VLOG will prove useful to those planning a similar adventure.

Really good set of vlogs - thank you. We are booked on Discovery 2 in just over a year. This cruise covers many of same destinations as the one you took but includes Columbo in Sri Lanka. It will be our first proper cruise and I think that we picked the right company to travel with. Saigon/hcm city is a great place. If you want to see crazy traffic in Vietnam - go to Hanoi. If you want to see the craziest traffic visit Dhaka in Bangladesh - I spent three years there and I used to go to other parts of Asia for respite. I used to work for British Foreign office and have spent many years in Asia over long period of time from mid 1960s ( as a child) and as a diplomat to present day (including Singapore, India, Bangladesh and Hong Kong).

Thank you so much - That’s a whole world of experience in just a few paragraphs. A culture shock can be good for you …. Saigon certainly provided that for us but we were glad we experienced it just really saddened for the family of injured or more likely deceased person. We are sure you’ll enjoy your cruise. Marella do make the onboard experience fun and entertaining. And the destinations are on the whole spectacular.. Thanks again for watching our VLOGs - it’s appreciated

Thank you - Although we did different things the traffic was a common factor. Appreciate the support as always

Thanks again for these vlogs they have been so useful and inspiring. Did you research where you wanted to visit and how easy was it to find your way around? I’m usually an organised excursion type for new places so admire you for going solo.

Thank you again - This day was a little ad how to be honest - We had planned to do the war remnants museum but after the incident on the way in we wanted to do something a bit more upbeat as we were struggling with the imagery of the poor guy lying in the road. The city centre area is fairly compact and distances between the main attractions are short - I had an Asia Sim Card so could use Google maps to find places and navigate us there. We do like to explore on our own if we can. The Tui “on your own” excursions allow you some freedom to explore whilst ensuring you get back to the ship or the ship waits. With these ports which are very far from the main local attractions… these are a good option we think. Hope you have great travels here .. Thanks again
