Andrea Mendenhall It happened during slavery. Black women were breeders for plantations, especially when the trade from Africa was made illegal, but not the actual ownership of slaves. You had to continue to stock your plantations because of death, old age, disease, worn out bodies, etc. so black men and women were forced on each other. You would choose the Buck, strong man and a good woman with wide hips. You’d notice that the health and strength of their children already born and go for those traits. Sick.
@coralday2009
@coralday2009 5 лет назад
Andrea Mendenhall I agree with that. The trouble is in the cases of rape and incest. Should women who get pregnant as a result of a sexual choice they did not and could not make be forced to have a baby? I’m with you on the “I made a mistake sex.” But the problem with overturning Roe is other women’s issues get caught in the net and it’s like the state saying, you must have a baby because you are a woman and you are pregnant.
@LaylaRazavi
@LaylaRazavi 5 лет назад
@@coralday2009 and Andrea Mendenhall You guys are both missing the point. If you have sex willingly and don't have the choice to abort because the state has intervened against your will, you are de facto conscripted into motherhood regardless of your wishes. She's making a claim that the net effect is the same, which is why she's arguing the state -- if it takes such an extreme stance -- should pay for the child's very expensive and lengthy costs the same way people in the military are compensated. You can disagree but at least understand the argument.

One problem I have with Mrs Atwood is name the states, countries and times. Don’t give such a broad answer. I can’t imagine Saudi Arabia as a country that severely limits women’s rights. But Russia, Iran, China, India and many others that impose severe restrictions on human and women’s rights. China’s forced one child policy resulted in forced abortions. India where women would often be forced to marry and have kids and in many cases were forced to abort girl babies. In Russia, the government paid for children to be born and severely restricted abortions to bolster the population. In the US there are states that are restricting abortions but that’s more of a reflection of the values of the population of that state.

You can’t imagine Saudi Arabia limiting women’s rights?! Unless something has changed, women can’t drive, must be escorted by male family members, cannot look men in the eye or speak to men, can’t show their hair, must cover their face…the list goes on. It was very hard teaching my female Saudi students because of the restrictions, but teaching the men wasn’t any different from teaching my American students. That right there tells you there is a severe limit.

Gotta keep those babies coming so they have people to work in their minimum wage factories. Especially in places like Georgia and Mississippi where there isn't a lot of diversity in job opportunity. The state should learn to develop different types of sectors so they are not reliant on manufacturing and contract workers for the majority of their state income. How can she compare a situation in which a group of high valued people in societies across the world all thru out it’s early history before really the 21st century to the current consensual relationships in the present United States of America, I am not referring to some states that say that rape victims must follow thru with the baby, that is not a subject I think I can interject into. But I do think there is no comparison in the selection of women for there own family tree and americas present situation in which women get to choose who and when they do sexual acts in which to create a child, I do respect that these states who do have such harsh laws that do mandate the follow thru of the victim in the cases of sexual assault being present are similar to what she writes in the book but that’s the only similarity to me, but maybe the coming future will grow into what she wrote, who knows!

'Fiction' is often a vivid, at times frightening reflection of truth. However, must say Joy Beyhar's comment that woman should be paid for housework ect. is, in my opinion ridiculous. One could sum up a good deal wrong with the world in that statement as well. Factually one is A. Single. Ergo it is your responsibility and yours alone the home gets cleaned and all other such responsibilities taken care of(certainly one should have help/resources for these things available if needed but that it is not an entitlement for any gender) B. You are married ,partnered or share housing. In such circumstances women must challenge social constructs and insist on communication, boundaries and share of household responsibilities. It is not for the government to pay you to be your own maid. Be the change you want. There is such a thing wherever we come from ,whatever paradigm we live in as personal responsibility and therein does lie a portion of our individuation and freedom.

But I don't think criminalising abortion is the same as enslaving women, institutionalising rape and taking away their children. Handmaids are imprisoned in houses and forced to go through pervy rituals with their masters and masters' wives. What Atwood has done is taken misogyny to its logical conclusion. She has dramatised it in an interesting and compelling way. But I'm sure what she describes hasn't happened anywhere.

@@scherzva The idea Mike is for young women to make well-informed decisions about their actions and the consequences of those actions when it involves the life or death of another human being. My issue is with much of our society and voices like Ms. Atwood speaking for an entire segment on “women’s rights” obviously including abortion rights without the mere mention of a baby, when in every case of abortion there is a developing child involved. 99% of girls/women engaging in sex do so of their own volition with peers, society and voices like Atwood’s encouraging them to focus on how sexy they look, what feels good in the moment, what men want, what other girls are doing, getting the Big O, among other things, all the while ignoring the most important consideration of all- whether she is prepared to extinguish a human life or not if one is conceived. Where is the CAUTION for girls today? The stop, take time to really think about what you’re doing, if this is the best choice, what the end result could be, ideally BEFORE entering a situation that becomes increasingly difficult to exit as physical intimacy drowns mental clarity. For those not ready to raise a child, asking, is my sexual enjoyment worth killing a human being if it comes to that decision?? Making sure she understands contraception is NOT 100% effective, and she may just years from being a child herself conceive a child. Helping her consider if she is prepared to raise a child now, or if she is prepared for the trauma of having that baby aborted from her womb and suffering possibly lifelong emotional/psychological issues?? It’s a controversial issue to be sure, but those are some of the things I consider having spoken with other women, seen what they’ve gone through, and dealt with my own personal issues with it. Thanks for listening.

@@nancyduhalde4679, abortion rates have been falling because of better access to FREE birth control and sex education, two things that The Political Right ignores www.guttmacher.org/gpr/2019/09/us-abortion-rate-continues-drop-once-again-state-abortion-restrictions-are-not-main. The reality is, birth control is not 100% and the "no sex before marriage" thing is BS that even my most religious friends ignored. The bulk of women who have an abortion already have kids. Maybe Biden's plan for affordable child care will help cut abortion rates even more. We have 400K kids in Foster Care in the US right now, obviously the "pro-lifers" like to ignore that. I don't see them racing to adopt babies that aren't white. I knew a few girls who forced miscarriages because they were underaged and didn't want their parents to know. I am not sure where people think that the government or male voters should dictate the reproductive rights of strangers, that's right out of The Handmaid's Tale.
@nancyduhalde4679
@nancyduhalde4679 3 года назад
@@scherzva I don’t doubt abortion rates have been falling in part due to better access to affordable/free birth control; however we must recognize the impact of pro-life initiatives as well. You may feel the Right ignores statistics/narratives from the Left, but I think it is more that we understand the bias of sources. Given the same event, two people reading from politically polarized sources could come away with completely different conclusions based on the words, tone, spin used and things omitted today. Understanding the bias of our sources is important. For example, some may not realize Guttmacher Institute is a pro-abortion/choice organization, named after former Planned Parenthood President Alan Guttmacher, so we can expect a slant to their articles; Media Bias places them Left-center, which I think is generous. Back to reasons for abortion decline, many mainstream journalists today support legal abortion and understandably don’t want to give credibility to pro-life efforts, however, a big reason for the long-term decline in the U.S. abortion rate is that a higher percentage of unintended pregnancies are being carried to term. In 1981, 54% of unintended pregnancies were aborted; that figure fell to 42% by 2011. Contraceptive access and sex ed are not the only things affecting decline; so too are pro-life educational, service, and legislative efforts. From what I’ve read, Mike, women who already have children sadly represent about half of abortions. Yes Biden’s affordable childcare I would expect to help. I don’t think waiting on sex until marriage will have any “outside” effect in a sex-driven society that considers the notion “BS” to begin with. Our kids are influenced by everything around them, peers, strangers, social media, pressure, magazines, billboards, everything. Yes many kids will have sex regardless, but today’s secular society does nothing to dissuade it, in fact encourages our children toward sexual intimacy without boundaries, not even dialoging on love, marriage or a committed relationship- the best scenario in which to potentially bring a child. I can’t speak for all pro-lifers, but those I know are well-informed on the abysmal foster care system in this country, and yes many of my own friends have adopted children, mostly non-white, so not sure what you are observing in saying you don’t see them racing to adopt non-white kids. My pro-life friends are involved in supporting women in crisis pregnancies, teenagers, giving of their time and resources, mentoring, counseling, shopping, caring on them. Many girls are just frightened and don’t know what to do and since secular society encourages pretty much one killing solution to take care of the “problem” (child), many find themselves struggling wishing there were other options of which they’re unaware. Pro-life organizations make them aware of those other options, including adoption by caring families and help if they wish to raise the child themselves throughout the pregnancy and thereafter. Well, Mike, we allow government to “dictate the rights” of strangers when it comes to abuse, assault and murder of children outside of the womb, so why not inside? Is it just a matter of location of the developing child? Because he or she is a human being inside the womb too. Good discussion; thank you!
@scherzva
@scherzva 3 года назад
@@nancyduhalde4679, I understand why some people have issues with women getting an abortion, but why should men or, worse, the government dictate women's reproductive choices? The entire "pro-life" movement became "a thing" in the 1980s, just like same-sex marriage, and more recently, Trans Rights. It's a vehicle to instill fear, all the while working to restrict our rights. Just look at the bill DeSantis just signed in Florida today. Meanwhile, anyone who has been there is well aware that Florida is a disaster, especially when it comes to drug use. It's no different than women trying to dictate men's issues; it's not their business. They don't have a penis; I could care less that their opinions are, any more than I or any man should tell a woman that she HAS to have a baby. I am well aware that the GQP (That's not a typo, just a nod to QAnon) has introduced/signed several bills to restrict rights to abortions. There are two workarounds though, Abortion Tourism (to another state or abroad), inducing a risky miscarriage, or simply disposing of the baby upon birth. I know several women that had to terminate pregnancies for medical reasons, and it's not like they had the time for some lengthy and unnecessary legal process.

They were so trying to bait her into being islaniphobic and racist by saying which countries which places names the places live how she has class and just says the timing instead to divert there attempts they bring it up again and then she says a white western country like Ireland instead and says it could happen in anerica to that were no different

Interestingly, she doesn't see the distinction between autocracy and the Federalist society inwhich Americans live. Her dystopian HMT is far more likely to come to life in a more unitary republic (like her native Canada, ironically) than it is in a more Federalist Republic (like the US or Switzerland, for example).

Women being "forced" to have children? Being paid like the miltary? Did we miss the part where a woman gave consent by sleeping w the guy? Nothing like Handmaids Tale sorry. In fact the birthrate in lower class is higher.

Oh yes... I forgot about the part were women have never had sex without giving consent. Republican Steve King: if not for incest and rape ‘would there be any population left?’ Even he gets women have gotten pregnant through forced sexual intercourse... he just thinks he has the right to tell said women they have to carry and rear that child.

I doubt you read much, dear, but if you do the research you'll find that even in cases where both partners have full time jobs, women do the majority of the domestic housework. Also, women's wages are negatively and permanently impacted when they become mothers. Men's wages remain steady or go up. ALSO a housewife raises the children, something that costs so much that *alone* covers her lost wages in most cases. Add in everything else and yeah, literally every woman raising a family, whether working outside the home or not, is vastly underpaid. Even if you're lucky enough to have a husband "who supports you". Like seriously what decade are you from?

@@unseeliesidhegoddess Women are made to do housework since they are biologically the weaker sex. If you're not ready to stay at home and take care of the kids, then don't get married and have kids. Simple.

Wow Margaret Atwood is one of the most boring people I have ever heard speak. Not the material she's talking about but her voice is so droning but hey, perfect to fall asleep to.
@louisemckn

When you speak softly people often listen better because they have to actively pay attention and not play with their phone or fidget etc. Not everyone can be as abrasive as Meghan when they speak, some have more self respect than to squeal like a stuck pig, give me "boring" any day then at least I know there's a better chance of a proper conversation happening instead of a cat fight!

@@louisemckn Well you are right about that. I listen to people who actually speak slowly and articulately as opposed to those who scream and rant, jumbling up their words. I just thought she was too droning in how she presented her statements.

@Akash Samson There's plenty of old people who speak louder and faster while retaining clarity. It's not that I couldn't understand her, she just spoke way too slowly and her tone was very monotone.

A very wise woman. That is the thing we Progressives are fighting against. "EVERYONE" has a right to control their own bodies. And it is a woman's choice whether or not to reproduce life.

Weren’t slaves also made to have children so there would be more slaves to exploit? I feel like that would have been the more poignant instance to highlight. Not even just forced birth, but forced conception too
