A wildly underrated film. The hopelessness and despair of folks laboring under constant threat of the disappearance of their way of life just pours out of it. A plea for understanding from a tragic past - one that even moreso now seems will just never be heard.
One of my very favourite films. I was reminded of this very passage during the so-called Tory "rebellion" in the Lords over Article 50!! No hearts, no minds and no vocal chords!!! Just roll over and play dead. The more things change, the more they stay the same!!!

You can't keep blaming thatcher..every pm since atlee was shutting down pits and heath if not defeated by the NUM would of closed them down completely in 1971...heavily subsidised industry like that means people's taxation would keep rising.

The rest of us have no chance and it all started with flogging off countless council houses to private landlords. That and the entire shit show that is now our rail network started going downhill when she decided to privatise it because they couldn't be arsed to actually operate it. And that's before we get into the fact that she privatised the water industry which is now pumping literal shit into our rivers on an industrial scale.

and there you are wrong, while the British coal miners suffered A LOT, the German socialist party was in power in Germany and treated their coal miners some years later, just by pointing at the UK with respect in comparison to the antisocial self claimed rational "economic" conservative party, who destroyed millions of people in the UK and thereby destroyed their ability to support the UK-economy for decades already. the endresult was a stronger germany, that was able to handle the reunion with eastern germany, while the UK dropped out of the EU and gone into idiotic isolation in their grief about their failing economy and rising poverty OF THEIR PEOPLE BY THE TORIES FOR THE TORIES.
