Margaret Thatcher on rising to power, and resigning from it

Following her memoirs The Path to Power, Stina meet Margaret Thatcher, the previous UK Prime Minister, and also one of the toughest people she met. The 'Iron Lady' is a nickname she definitely lived up to. Baroness Thatcher talks about her background, growing up in Grantham and how the constant interaction with people in her father's store shaped her future political aspiration.
She touches on her relationship with her husband, her role as a woman in world politics, the Falkland islands war, socialism, the war in Yugoslavia, nuclear weapons and leaving office after resigning. And how did she react when Stina asked her jump?

Margaret Thatcher was quick as a whip on her responses and answered them all brilliantly! She looked at that interviewer like she had three heads when asked if she would jump up in the air! I was mortified that this girl didn’t have the sense nor decency to refrain from asking a ridiculous, childish question to such a dignified and important lady. Mrs.Thatcher looked appalled and you could tell she lost all respect for that girl in that moment!

100% agree...and I agree puerile, especially in this case... Sadly the interviewer Stina was out of her depth...fair play that she kept going ( I guess what choice did she have) But Baroness Thatcher was head and shoulders above her questing, " there is a saying..." when your in a bad situation and already too deep...stop digging" This interviewer, just kept digging. Embarrassing.

Very good interview. Some of the questions may seem a bit silly, but they are in fact not. They often refer to different kinds of criticism of Thatcher at the time. About how she admittedly proved that women can achieve a lot in today's society, but how typical a woman was she really, if she was an Iron Lady at home as well, how good her negotiation skills were and ability to make compromises if necessary etc. Thatcher was of course aware of this and therefore it is very interesting to listen to her answers.

What in hell was the interviewer thinking? She had a great chance of interviewing a historical great political leader (Thatcher is considered the best prime minister ever after Churchill), and the interviewer asks such dumb questions, and asks her to do a jump at the end. The most amusing thing was that Thatcher was actually insulting her in a very polite (and british!) way and the interviewer did not notice. The only thing this interview was useful for was to show Thatcher's intellect and how puerile was the final request of the interviewer.

Ai Zhongguo She is the second prime minister to whose funeral went the Queen, besides Churchill. The UK is a very different place, and she turned it from being 'The Sick Man of Europe' back into a healthy economy. Sure, there were people that hated her, but that does not take away that she was very influential.
@aizhongguo5812
@aizhongguo5812 10 лет назад
jpnarino Yes she was influential but then so was Hitler. Every British PM is influential. That didn't stop her colleagues from getting rid of her. She had a state funeral because she died under a Conservative government. Yes, during times of cuts when money could not be found for anything, £10,000,000 was pulled out of a hat. God only knows what public services perished in order to fund it. The head of state will always attend state funerals, that's kind of obvious. The Queen would have little choice on the matter, its part of her duties. She was removed from power by her 'friends' because she was a liability. In other words, the British public did not want her in power. That's hardly the stuff of legends.
@jpnarino
@jpnarino 10 лет назад
Ai Zhongguo She was highly influential, more than other PMs in 20th century except Churchill. She did not have a state funeral by her own wish. The Queen went because she wanted, as it was not a state funeral. A big part of the funeral costs were paid by her family, and the estimate of her funeral cost for the state was more on £3,000,000, not 10 millions. She was removed from power due to her strong opposition to Europe, and her confrontational style with her own party. Altough she pissed some people off, in general the public in the UK liked her and voted for her, don't forget she is the only prime minister also to win 3 elections. Just get your facts straight!

Lady Thatcher didn't think twice about calling Stina out on fallacies of logic & "gotcha" questions intermixed with flaccid ones. Her reaction when asked to jump is vintage Thatcher. I think the period after she was PM & before the dementia took hold was when she was the most clever & outspoken. It's hilarious to hear her backhanded comments about some of the more juvenile questions she's asked and Stina's uncomfortable laughter. Mrs. T did NOT joke. I guess coming from the country the interviewer did she wasn't used to leaders that don't jump to other people's or countries tune!!... Yep I'm sorry I know that's a bit tactless, but come on!!.. Lady Thatcher of course made it clear she wouldn't do that, she also had to explain why Britain shouldn't have to apologise for standing against the Nazis when no one would, we're proud of that, just because you're country didn't do the morally right thing, doesn't mean we should feel guilty, that's absurd.... Nobody likes to say you're country didn't do what was right, you sat on the fence etc etc, but when you try to belittle us for doing the right thing, and standing alone to do the right thing, don't be surprised when you get that answer.... Oooh and breath 🙄

Stina asks Thatcher why she feels Great Britain has been standing for something more than other countries, Thatcher starts to explain the constitutional system that was put in place nearly 1000 years ago, Stina's head explodes and she changes the subject.

Oh Man... I just reheard the interview... I can not believe what this woman said... * "Do you like being a woman?..." Thatcher's answer is great "I have never tried the alternative" hehehe * "Caligula, who was a roman fighter"... Caligula was a roman emperor * "You are very good at deviating my questions" "I am good at making you formulate your questions correctly"

@@BlytheWorld1972 Yes he's not brilliant but he's certainly the best since she left. Major and May incompetent, Blair and Cameron weak as piss and media obsessed walk overs, Brown unlucky in timing - although I'm not naturally Labour but I felt sorry for Brown it was just one external crisis after another in the space of 2.5 years. He might have been OK in different times, he certainly kept us out of that single currency so I applaud him for that.

@@cliffgaither You seem to have a very stereotypical image of women but women are completely different from each other. To bring obvious news to you: they are individuals and many don’t share what you consider to be “female traits”, which btw are often a mere socially induced. And claiming that a strong willed, intelligent and educated woman isn’t a woman anymore is blatant sexism in its most obvious form.

How embarrassing to ask someone who, love or hate her, is such an important part of history and politics to "do a little jump." Thatcher somehow amazingly managed to get out of that absurd request with both dignity and not looking as if she taking herself too seriously by almost poking fun at herself and laughing "all right no! no, no, no, to coin a phrase!" The likes of bumbling Boris and Theresa May with her "dancing" would have eagerly complied and looked like fools, you'll never see the likes of Maggie again
