This one is more for personal reasons but maybe others will get a kick out of it but basically, it's all about the session musicians who played on Mari's work! This track features the legendary Michael Landau on guitar who, as always, offers up his sweet tone, a cool solo and also some interesting (Hendrixy?) chord shapes I've never used before. So I really wanted to learn some Landau, especially on a typical melodic pop/rock song. Also there's a really cool video of Landau and co recording this in the studio which is gold and there's also one with Lukather and Jeff Porcaro on another one of her tracks! Priceless footage! Also a great melodic rock track! :)

Amazing job. Love this song too. It also features one of my favorite Landau solos. He was totally at his peak around this era.

I can't believe I didn't chime in on this one! I listened to it when you released it. A couple of things: First of all, I can't find anywhere online that Akira Takasaki is married to Mari, but I do know the past few albums, he has recorded a lot of tracks, and has toured with her. Second, Mari's catalogue is EXTENSIVE. Her pre-LA work is highly regarded from 1983 to 1986. The Blue Revolution album, as well as the follow up "Promise in History" has some early, pre-B'z (another band you should check out by the way) Tak Matsumoto playing some TASTY riffs. Third, her LA work is amazing, starting with 1987's "In the Precious Age" all the way to 1991's "Tomorrow", which I believe to be her most solid effort. Michael Landau was all over that record, and the musicianship is amazing. Fourth, as she moved away from hard rock into Adult Contemporary during the 90's up until 2007's "Sur Lie", she lost her way a bit. There were bright spots like "Ash and Blue" from the "Sense of Self" album. Lastly, starting with 2010's "Aestetica", she stated the "album titles with Engrish ending in A" phase, as well as a return to the hard rock cum metal style that made her famous. All of them have been fantastic. She has been astoundingly prolific, even producing a great deal of her own tracks. It seems she took all of the best of her storied career, and poured them into the next 5 albums. I KNOW this long, but if you ever have the chance or the wherewithal, dig into her catalogue. She is an amazing singer, songwriter, and all around gem. They don't make em like they used to.

Her early stuff is in the iron maiden ballpark, these days she's into Nightwish and Within Temptation styled metal.

she kicks major ass. those days she sounded like as if she had Def leppard or danger danger as her back up band. these days she is into Nightwish-styled metal.

What about covering "Voice of minds" by Mari Hamada with Steve Lukather and Tim Pierce guitarwork? :)

I would love to do more since she seems to always have the best of the LA scene on those songs. :)

He was the genius guitarist behind the band Loudness, if you didn't know. They broke out in the West with Thunder In the East. Excellent album!

you may wanna track down her band score. her stuff from 83 to 87 are full of astonishing guitar riffs and solos. those early stuff will reminds you of Maidens and Queensryche. And guess who was her first guitarist ? Tak Matsumoto !

Yes I definitely want to hear more of her work, especially around this period. Like I said in the description I was introduced through the session players like Landau and Lukather and it's that Melodic Rock / AOR that I'm into. I'm not as keen on the 'heavy metal' stylings of Maiden or Queensryche.

I hear ya. I like her tracks from her 'hair metal ' or L.A. period as well. Most importantly she's a consummate live performer, then and now. imagine if she had the Terror Twins or Andy Timmons playing for her live during that time. Would be an awesome sight ! And even at her mid 50s she still is a beauty !

How did you know this song? It is really a way to play without inconvenience

Have to say until this video, I'd never heard of this person in my puff. Was she part of the LA scene? Funny as the LA scene never really floated my boat... that's where all those "hair bands " came up after using Pyromania as an influence, and unfortunately Def Leppard seemed to get lumped into the "hair band" category. 😩 Not a bad song.... quite like the solo. Still waiting on some covers from First Strike! 😉

I don't know how big she was but obviously singing in Japanese probably prevented anything big happening in the West but I think she was big in Japan. This is the LA session musician scene. All these great proper established musicians who knew their stuff and could play anything. The best example is of course the guys from Toto who played on Thriller. But there was this whole tight group of players who basically created that West Coast Session Musician sound that's on most of the major pop/rock from that era.

In the late 80s, prominent session musicians/producers based in and around Los Angeles were being used by Japanese pop/rock artists. Even super producer David Foster had time to work with a Japanese singer called Seiko Matsuda around this time. Mari Hamada was also one of the lucky ones and she even recorded sessions in L.A., but was never part of any American scene, per se. You could call this music Japanese AOR/West Coast due to the playing and production of the session players on these records. I've seen bwm5150's iPod. You're more likely to find Steely Dan's Aja on there than anything by the so-called 'hair bands'....

Ahh, okay, I'm thinking that I was thinking about the wrong LAScene then. This one you guys are talking about, I don't think I know much about at all. Thanks for the info. 👍
