Along with the famous diminuendo at E6 I thought it would be complete if Callas had finished the Aria with a high F - so I thought I'd make it true through a little audio 'persuasion' :p
With all due respect, I don't think Madame Callas would have appreciated her voice being manipulated. She was an intense purist and perfectionist. Just my unsolicited opinion.
Please!! listen to Polonaise Mignon MARIA CALLAS- Torino 1951- She sang High-F in the last scale. Elvira de Hidalgo said that CALLAS could reach easyli F-sharp in lesson vocalizations. She preferred anyway a middle register in which her voice was full of colour and incredible powerful. MARIA CALLAS was unique ,a GODDESS that came to the earth to bring the miracle of her supreme art!!
de Hidalgo had said that? there is an interview of Elvira saying that Maria went up to E natural.. of course when u can sustain a note u can go at least one semitone above but where did u hear de Hidalgo saying such a thing?
Luis sorry but no, Callas never sang a high F in Mignon, Armida, Proch;'s Variations or anywhere else. They are all wrongly enhanced live recordings. And de Hidalgo said she could reach E, not F sharp :)
First of all, I don't know how you achieved it, but that high F was amazing. If I hadn't read your intro I would have believed it was real. As convincing as the high F was however, I believe the actual performance can't be improved upon. In particular, the 16th notes leading up to the high Eb, then the diminuendo, followed by the descending chromatic scale, followed by the ascending notes leading up to a breath (finally!) before the repetition of the melody; well, nobody else does, or did, anything even close to that. Some sopranos can sing higher notes, some can perhaps sing as long without taking a breath, perhaps some could sing the 16th notes just as clearly, I don't know. But I think many would agree that this performance was astonishing, and, most importantly, it was beautiful and artistic. Callas was first and foremost a musician (many may not realize that she was an accomplished pianist). I think you can hear her musical intelligence in her singing. Ultimately, in performance, her musicality and dramatic interpretation became one and the same.
What a wonderful description and level of detail. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and perspective! I love learning more about the depth and scale of La Divina's talent! 💖
How wonderful! She would love you for doing that. Who knows, perhaps on one of her braver nights she might have tried and nailed it!!! R.I.P. she left us 35 years ago yesterday, and the gap has never been filled. Brava per sempre!!!!!
Assoluta! O dio mio, i maria, cette voix du cœur qui seule au cœur arrive que nul ne nous rendra jamais, sas efkaristo para poli i maria callas. Frederico.
My comment is not about "persuasion" - it was fun. But wanna say this. I know Callas very well (have everything she has ever recorded), and she has so many qualities and this is a good example of her singing. What really impresses me is the total control of her voice, f. e. 1.55-2.01!! After what she did from 1.40 - 1.53.? omFg
That's wild! How did you do it?? Just took the F5 and moved it up an octave? I have this recording and it's truly my favorite "Ah! non Giunge". and my favorite "Ah, non credea" for that matter, too!! Thanks for posting!
@Josquinquin Allegedly she could sing up to G6 in rehearsals with the same thickness of voice, so yes, she probably could have done it in her early days - her vocal prime!
ahahhahaha nice:p I think Sutherland had sung one Sonambulla in covent Garden ending in a F6 but as with all other recordings of her F6, it doesnt exist! :D
Sutherland was terrified of the F. She touched the note a few times early on, but never sustained it. And she transposed the Queen of the Night down (nothing wrong with transposing).
i like it!!! Callas sang a high F only in Rossini's Armida a couple of years before this Sonnambula, so she might have sang it again in some other performances.

From Medea's Pier Paolo Pasolini, italian director (film 1969). Where La Divina played the main role of the enchantress, a character from Greek mythology.
Thank you, for honoring Maria Callas with the High F! She had, has, always, will have legions of justly adoring admirers! However, she, tragically, has a Satanic legion of, CHEAP, insensitive, brainless---- soulless, "non-admirers"---- SHAME!!!! This was a powerful "canonball", that you fired against her CHEAP detractors and "mudslingers"!!!! We all love you and thank you for this so needed defense!!!! From Heaven Maria Callas thanks and kisses you all!!!!

Assoluta, very interesting, thanks! By the way, she never vocalized till G, in her prime she could hit quickly an F but only vocalizing. She never sang an F in public. Elvira de Hidalgo told me this.
Well, as you can imagine she was EXTREMELY proud of her. Only good things. This happened about one year after Callas had died. I was 17, she also gave me a voice lesson (the absolute first of my life!), but I left her home hoarse..Eventually I realized she never had any other famous pupil apart from Callas. There must have been a good reason...But of course it was a VEEERY interesting encounter.
because we are more interested in Callas vocalism than in Price's. I was 18, so I definitely wasn't a great singer! She pushed my voice high as I never went during the times I had vocalized and played with my voice a bit. I left hoarse.

I have a very fine pitch pipe and I can tell you that was without a doubt a high e it was not a hi f I don't even see Maria Callas whatever even attempt it knowing what the consequences could be is she missed that note and crack goodbye voice
Well, it's fake and could be better made since the timing is not perfect and the sound behind is terrible. However, it's nice to hear it and imagine the divine Callas doing a high F! :)
