Her Puritani performance in 56 was something else. Truly

No one, at least no one else that I have ever heard, has or had a real two-note trill other than Callas. Also, there are passages that no one else sings precisely, such as a repeated figure in the Lucia mad scene consisting of two 32nd notes followed by one 16th note, where everyone else sings triplets. Callas seriously studied bel canto and did not compromise when it came to singing what the composer wrote no matter how difficult.

She taught as much as she entertained. Every aria was truly a lesson. That is why she was the greatest ever.

@@philliplewis1024 I couldn't agree more. BTW, Aprille Milo said the following about Callas: Listening to Callas is like reading Shakespeare: you’re always going to be knocked senseless by some incredible insight into humanity.

Dana Windsor: Then you sadly never heard Joan Sutherland who could trill circles around Callas.

@@johnpickford4222 We are all entitled to our opinions! That is the nature of art: no two people will agree on everything. I have listened to many of Sutherland's recordings and consider her to be one of the greatest prima donnas of the 20th century. Peronally I think she sang the greatest Donna Anna. She was unquestionably a master of the art of coloratura. However, I still stand by what I said.

Her Mimì is very underrated. I adore that recording of La Bohème. Di Stefano is also very affecting, specially in the last act.

Only Callas could sing such a wide range of roles within one year. If only Fedora was recorded that same year. Five performances took place in May at La Scala with Franco Corelli and Anselmo Colzani with Gianandrea Gavazzeni conducting.

Yes, there is a recording and it's here in NYC. I've heard a few snippets and it's unbelievable. It belongs to a private collector who used to live in Central Park West. Callas' voice is in unbelievable shape, Corelli was having vocal problems that night. That Fedora and many more exist. I've heard snippets from her Valkyria and Isolda from a certain guy in Rome.

I think this was the year when the cracks were starting to be hard to ignore. So she was inconsistent, particularly in New York during the fall. But overall, it was still a very good year. One performance that I love from that year (which is not represented here) is the Lucia from Naples.

Maybe her nerves were starting to show. But next year's Bolena was one of her very best performances, and the year after, Medea in Dallas wow
@ER1CwC
@ER1CwC 8 месяцев назад
@@milanetc4865 Her Anna Bolena is a landmark. I'd characterize the second half of that decade as brilliant but inconsistent. I think her vocal problems also revealed what was ideal for her voice all along. For example, the Mad Scenes disc (including the Anna Bolena madscene) is vocally fantastic, but the Verdi arias disc which she recorded concurrently is inconsistent, particularly the Nabucco aria.

Il Trovatore studio recording is listed as among the excerpts. The original plan for that recording was to be Maria Callas and Richard Tucker. Herbert Von Karajan was conducting. Herbert Von Karajan was allegedly a supporter of the Nazis in Germany. RIchard Tucker was a devout member of the Jewish faith so he would not sing for Von Karajan so they changed the plans. Richard Tucker out, in Giuseppe Di Stefano.

@@danawinsor1380 Yeah I'm not sure what he means by that. But to elaborate on Karajan, he wasn't a true believer, but he was either a "mitläufer" ("fellow traveller") or opportunist who saw joining the party as the fastest way to advance his career. Any way, not good. He was no Toscanini.
