I prefer the cadenza and ornaments of 1957, but other than that, I do think that this performance is much better. She is not trying to sing lightly, but is rather simply singing lightly. And so the voice is paradoxically fuller and more earnest. A classic performance. (The ‘wake-up’ is also expertly done.)

i don't know. I think that the 1957 studio rendition is stunning and it's one of the recordings in which Callas pushes and her voice the least (along with 1957 barbiere). Potentially even better vocally than this 1955 recording (and I have heard all Callas' la sonnambulas)
@@judygarland7186 I don’t think she’s pushing in 1957, but she is purposely slimming down her sound. It’s similar to what she does in Rigoletto and some parts of Butterfly.
Maria Callas wanted to sing with an emotional force, to be very precise in all the notes and turns of the final aria. We even forgive that sometimes in seeking that precision she does not respect the times, and the orchestra helps her. A work of live art! And I prefer this singing lightly, metalic in high notes. Bravo!
Qui l'unico sgangherato è lei, . non capisce nulla di musica e di arte..ad avercene oggi di "sgangherate ' così.. si acolti le mezze calzette chr ci propinano come le più grandi soprano in circolazipne, e non faccio nomi per educazione e rispetto che si deve comunque a dei seri professionisti ma l'arte e la grandezza che rimangono ai posteri sono un'altra cosa e a distanza di un secolo dalla nascita, questa donna viene ancora ricordata come la più grande e viene studiata come inarrivabile artista a 360 gradi, alla faccia della sgangherata..
