Extraordinary skill, passion, intensity & stage presence by the great Maria Pages in that awesome flamenco dance! I'll never forget watching it live in London back in 1996!
I had forgottem that Riverdance had other "percussive" dance styles in it. I LOVED Maria Pages in this. She is so beautifully female, the way she dances.
I can't even begin to imagine how much concentration she must have had during this. She's completely aware of what everything is doing, hands, feet, legs, clothes, and she's doing it in those heels!
I grew up with the Riverdance VHS that was filmed at the point Dublin theater and she did this particular dance w/ this particular songs BUT during the second half of the song when the song change Michael Flatley the creator of idiot came out and danced to her and I really liked the two of them together with him do any Irish step dancing and her doing the flamingos dancing. I loved/love the contrast between the two. Haven't seen this particular version till today. Didn't even know that existed until today. If you haven't seen the other one do so. You should really check it out. It's one of my faves of the Riverdance dances.
It was a great iteration but I think it lost its meaning being just a solo. The original concept was it was supposed to represent fire and mans first interaction with it.
WOW!!!!!!! I've seen a lot of flamenco, but had never heard of her. My god, what an energy, what an control over every little movement, making it look so effortlessly, yet, she's fire, energetic, happy fire. This is the first flamenco dance that makes me happy watching it, not just wistful and full of admiration. Maria pages has got a new fan.
Yes! Every movement has a purpose. No fillers. The hands, feet , turns skips etc ..... Every movement a purpose. Most amazing to me! I could watch it a thousand times a day. And I much prefer the solo. She seems more free to be herself.❤❤❤it!
ah, good to see a new [well 9 years ago anyway! lol] fan of Maestra Pages! I've never seen a more thoughtful, seasoned and meticulous flamenco dancer -- even when she's not moving, the spirit & energy are overwhelmingly present... she's truly amazing to watch
This is classical flamenco that I saw in Spain in 1968--flamenco ballet performed by a true artist who excels at her craft. She looks the part, acts the part, and most certainly dances the part. Consider yourselves lucky because you can't find this in Spain anymore.
I was glad they gave Maria some more intricate choreography and a true solo in the new show. I get that the idea of the original Firedance was to show a fusion between Irish dancing and Flamenco, but I think this is so much more effective as a showcase of Flamenco. You can certainly hear the Celtic influence in the music though!
Maria Pages is to Flamenco what Michael Flatley is to Irish Dance...simply the most hauntingly beautiful combination of movement and music I have ever witnessed. One cannot be extricated from the other...they move in tandem for and of each other. This is Fire...uncontainable, brutal and beautiful in its intensity until it bursts through all else and envelopes your very soul. Maria Pages is Flamenco!
I have been lucky to see Riverdance LIVE twice ! I still cannot describe what it is like to watch this show live. Riverdance is amazing! Her parts (she had 2 parts as i recall) were my most favorite. The energy she exudes is insane! if they ever come to your city, buy the tickets. It is a show to watch live, you’ ll remember it forever!
This woman is absolutely mesmerizing on stage. There's a great variety of flamenco dancers but she is the most amazing among them. Besides, she really dances in a style of her own, stretching the range from traditional flamenco to cultural varieties and 'Firedance' expresses very well the core of her incredible talent and charisma. I just don't tire of watching her dancing, it really gets under the skin.
I feel gratified, fortunate to have witnessed this solo performance. Before I knew it existed, I felt that Maria Pages' talent, beauty and artistry rendered Michael Flatley's presence on stage in another version that of an unnecessary, unwelcome interloper during it's execution.
Every time I see this dance I get chills. The intensity of her emotion is beautiful to watch. I will never get tired of watching the incomparable Maria Pages. Bravo!
You know your watching a timeless classic when you are still in awe and transformed. Close your eyes and reboot the memory of the first time you saw this.
Amazing and everlasting. Phenomenal performance. I had the opportunity to watch this live back in 1990s while on tour in the UK and I loved it. An extraordinary flamenco artist indeed. She is magnificent and so unique.
I really don't understand how can anyone push dislike,I swear they don't feel music and don't know what is real dance, she is stunning and so charismatic
I loved the show!! It incorporated all the styles and dance steps from around the world to Celtic and Orchestral music, and Firedance would have to be one of the most powerfull sight and sound shows i have ever seen.
I love this! The dancer really reminds me to my Flamenco teacher who's my great example because of her aplomb and her expression. Flamenco is such an emotional kind of dancing and it can tell every single feeling. That one was strong and powerful, female but not vulgar. Simply love it❤
Amazing, spectacular and entrancing! Flamenco is one of the most incredibly sensual dance forms in the world and she's honed it to far more than even fine art. Riverdance may have made a worldwide phenomenon of Irish dancing when it debuted, but THIS is what has remained in my mind for well over a decade!
Love this dance sooo much. Riverdance is an inspiring show and its so beautiful. Always a classic to my mom, my sister, and I that it will forever be in my heart.
I get chill bumps every time I see this and I'm not a dancer. I don't know if she's still dancing but I wish I had been able to see her dance live once. What an artist!
WOW!!! Absolutely incredible passion. Her hand movements so graceful, and her facial expressions evoked a fiery passion. What a tremendous performance. Electrifying. BRAVO!
Every time I watch this video I get goosebumps. Her choreography is so clever. Here she is dancing to an Irish tune, moving elegantly and gracefully like a ballet dancer, yet giving hints of her flamenco brilliance here and there. I can't say enough. She just makes me want to get up and say OLE! But this is in River Dance. What a teaser.
I have watched this dance by Maria since i first saw Riverdance with Michael....... it enforces a power , it speaks of the fire of life and womanhood....... she feels me with inspiration. Gracias Maria
Lights, music, background, and of course her dance are perfect. As if a miracle. She seems to inspire the world. I'm a piece of that world. I hope I can perform like her someday. Fortunately, I will go watching her company 10 days after. So exciting.
Maria pages, is poetry in motion, its choreography unites cultures from the base of flamenco. It really is a woman who brig ...hten up the dance with his movements as infinite. Must be seen!.
I cried when i first saw this. It is pure emotion captured through her fluid movements, grace and utt most passion! beauty at its fullest and pure art at its best! Maria Pages...i thank you!
I never get tired of watching this woman dance. Maria apitomizes all that is wonderful and transforming by her motion, beauty, grace. Love her, love riverdance!!
I've watched this video many times and it still captivates me. The opening of the dance is my favorite part, she moves her body and limbs like they truely are made of flames. Great talent, well done !
I prefer her dancing alone. The Irish dancers are all about footwork, but MP is so much more.she dances with her whole body. No comparison. I love her hands.
What I really find to be fascinating is that this piece was originally intended for a duet, but she made it completly hers, no partner needed. So in love with this piece. Wonderfull.
I honestly feel like Flatley kind of “horned in” on it. He definitely wasn’t necessary for the number to work, as is evidenced here. Don’t get me wrong, he dances brilliantly on the 95 version. But I like it SO much better like this. :)
Her dancing is brilliant! I used to do flamenco (and quite successfully). Moreover, I have just adored it! Unfortunately, I had to quit because of the amount of studying. I want to cry. 😢
I remember watching this as a little girl with my grandmother and trying to attempt it, but I could never still to this day I can not do it. She is amazing and I even got to see her live preform this in Dublin at the River Dance show. She is even more amazing in Person!
Did you not know that Irish dance has copy a lot from Flamenco for their contemporary Irish dance. This off course includes footwork. Just about every one in dance has copied from flamenco - even Michael Jackson's choreography. This I said not as my opinion but as facts - already published and admitted by the artists thenselves. Michael used to watch RU-vid flamenco dance for inspiration and even asked famous dancer Juaquin Cortes for help.
Maria Pages combine force et douceur, elle est la seule à me faire autant vibrer, elle exprime parfaitement l'âme du flamenco, ses mouvements sont grâcieux et harmonieux et en même temps plein de fougue et de passion. Je l'adore.
Mesmerizing... she combines raw beauty and a kind of deliberate spontaneity to a bewitchingly seductive effect. From the opening chords she's the embodiment, the nature, of fire. The musicians only complement the dance by 'filling in' with the ears what the eyes alone cannot fully appreciate. Completely gorgeous.
The music is from Riverdance, Music from the Show. Bill Whelan composed the music for the show. When I saw this number live several years ago, I cried. The music is so gorgeous, and Maria Pages is an icrredibly expressive dancer. I recommend both the DVD of the show and the CD soundtrack. Enjoy!
I saw this live last night and it simply took my breath away. She is incredible! The energy she radiates is so powerful and passionate. Truly inspiring.
This was a great routine! I love it when they wear the longer flowing dresses and dance! The dances look so much better. This lady is talented for sure! I hope she has more videos out!
I'm Spanish, and for some reason I've always felt that between Ireland and Spain there is a very special relationship. I hope the Irish people feel the same. Greetings from the south.
Next year for my senior project I want to begin to learn either Flamenco or belly dancing. I prefer Middle Eastern culture and music, performances like these are what make the decision so difficult!
