People don’t know how hard it is to sound very fragile and sing very whispery and breathy and then all of a sudden you have to switch on the punchy strong solid vocals for that climax, and hit the brake again and go back to those vulnerable vocals to end the song. And on top of all of that, you realize she wrote the song too. Mariah Carey is so talented it’s insane.
This is another difficult song of hers to sing live, the other being Petals/Rainbow (interlude)… so much vocal gymnastics going on in one song! She’s pure genius, a legend and amazing vocalist! ♥️
If only people knew how technically gifted this woman is - the intricate airy runs And riffs and the changes of register (singing airy and falsetto then changes to modal / mixed voice) truly impressive
Singing this song with all the breathy vocals, the runs, the transitions and so on it's a vocal suicide, she is an unmatched vocalist and we all know it but we can appreciate for a moment that she wrote this song the lirics, the melody, the musicality in the runs. It's a masterpiece as well as the whole album. Her discography is untouchable. That's why regardless of any preference she will always be in league on her own. She's the complete package. The Songbird Supreme.
@evverr not really, for regine it's easy for her, and she even made a mariah medley here's the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e1RRdNnBE3Q.html
Nobody is capable to sing this song with the same arrangement, as always, they all skips a lot of transitions, runs and replace the breathy vocals with the chest voice to make the song easier. Morissette, Regine and so on... All of them
@@bennyfilysour9727 She was perfect with music box and daydream. She lost majority of the general public with butterfly. Forgettable songs such as the roof, fourth of July, the beautiful ones...
@@cokomoko7 hahahahahahahahah you are the worst, seriously. Come on.Butterfly is one of her best. You have no idea what the story is behind this album so leave your bs somewhere else bye Felicia
@@cokomoko7 incorrect. In terms of sales, butterfly was pretty equal to the rest. Of course, daydream was one of her best-selling albums, but to say butterfly was her downfall is very incorrect. People were more interested in Mariah because of her split from Tommy and it even passed into rainbow with heartbreaker(another #1) and her collab with Whitney(which further solidified her as a legend). Mariah’s “downfall” which is some top artist's peak wasn’t even due to Mariah… it was her team and label working her to the bone causing her to crash, and also 911 interfering with the movie. In conclusion, don’t hate on Butterfly❤️
I like how she plays with the melody in the verses here, shifts it down a bit to make it easier to sing, but it kinda sounds more interesting than the record. Everyone knows about her high notes, but her lower register and melodic flexibility are actually really under-rated.
I wish wish she could take this approach on her new shows. She's a vocal genius she can navigate every corner of her 6 octave instrument and it will always be pure bliss.
Such a technical beast of a song to sing. Mariah is undoubtedly one of the best voices in history and I'm willing to fight anyone who thinks otherwise! 🙌🔥 This is LIVE singing!
@@madamx2244 Not even close to Mariah's level of complexity, difficulty, creativity since Vision of love ... Mariah has always displayed more complex vocals because she's more skilled, she has bigger range and more complex technique and style of singing.... Furthermore, artistry also encompasses what a vocalist is and Mariah is the full package regardless of any preference : songwriter, producer, composer, musical genius. Whitney was great but when it comes to technicalities, textures, vocal skills, range, versatility, musicality and artistry the winner is Mariah and this is not an opinion
@@honestperson3042 Whitney is a full package tho better actress too are you going to compare glitter to the bodyguard? Haha also Whitney came in first loved and she's humble Mariah is a bit rude and bitchy sometimes
And even though her voice was near perfect here, you could already hear the signs of her voice changing /declining drastically. It doesn't sound as easy as even a year prior, mid belts sounded more squeezed and the highest belt was amazing but raspier than her past ones. She still had some of that magical voice from the year prior but it was going to dissappear within the next two years 98-99. Casuals will not notice with all the lipsyncing she started doing to hide the misery, but the real ones know.
I bern a fan since VOL but her voice changed big time with butterfly release. I remember noticing it when she sung butterfly on Oprah. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It was beautiful . I love the tone and everything about butterfly era but the change in her voice was very noticeable on that Oprah performance. I remember watching it and thinking …. Something has changed. I just seen her Xmas show live last week. She sounded amazing
@@theoneandonly2503… she lipped performances before 1998 she only started doing it more because of her struggles with nodules from excessive touring at the time from world tour to recording to another album to another world tour with performances in between her voice was under stress so no her voice didn’t decline she just needed to let it rest notice how when she was rested her voice nearly resembled daydream with a lil rasp her voice so i wouldn’t call that a decline that implies it has gotten worse which is not true
People are always saying she doesn't get enough credit for her song writing but with the consistent mentioning of her writing credit has made it such a thing that so many people very aware of that these days.
This is exactly where you see Mariah’s stratospheric talent-her ability to adjust her majestic vocals to any live performance and still make everything sound angelic ♥️
I never understood the obsession with the Letterman performance. This one is far superior 😭 when she sings "And if you should return to me" at 2:15 is my favorite part. So beautiful 💕
Bwbdbdbsbs lmaoo « obsession »...there is only 2 performances of this song (tour excluded)- as a semi-lamb the Letterman was the reference. This one is so interesting musically but i still prefer ltmn in terms of emotions, it was rawer.
@@Eddy6159 letterman was better for the breathy vocals. This one is better for belting. Everything was crystal clear. She was having trouble in Letterman
I'm glad I'm not the only one lol this one is a melismatic superior plus, I fcking love the aesthetic of the SNL's stage setting. It was aesthetically pleasing that matched the mood of the performance.
First time hear her LIVE version... Studio version really impossible.,but her LIVE have other version.,Its so beautifull and better than studio... The song very hard to sing, and her switch technique make me goosebump... Trully queen
She truly is the queen of melisma in pop music. She changes the melody of her own song and still is on key. Bravo. And when she belts it is the brightest and lyrical sound. It's beauty in my ear and a marvel to watch a masterful vocalist. Bravo Mariah! ❤️
What a beautiful song musically and lyrically, and probably her most personal. It’s also a Mount Everest of a song to conquer in terms of the range and modulation required but she courageously stood out there and sang… she clearly struggled a bit throughout and her voice was not quite as good as her peak (1990-96) but she still masterfully transitions from breathy, velvety tones to powerful runs like very few can. But what I love most about this song and performance is her focus, sincerity and integrity throughout the entire length …. even when struggling she continued to reach for upper register notes, her quivering facial expressions and tender delivery of runs at the end all showcase her commitment to this beautiful piece. She BELIEVES in this song. This is Mariah the Artist, not the pop icon.
WHOA!! She really changed this rendition up. 🥰😍🦋🦋🦋 Part of her absolute brilliance is that she can sing around and do an amazing job no matter what condition her vocals are in. Still be absolutely AMAZING. 💯 🦋🦋🦋
The Michelangelo of singing. She crafted a vocal style so beautiful and decided she would rather put herself through the most straining and probably damaging vocal technique rather than just continue to belt in her natural chest voice. She gave the world something totally magical but probably paid a high price later to try to live up to that magic she’d created.
I'm always amazed when people want to target Mariah for lip-synching. Mariah has incredible moments when she out does her CD tracks when performing live. To me what's so great about her SNL performance.. Mariah's absolute soul here and looks of course absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for sharing this.
As iconic and flawless as Mariah is as a singer, her songwriting abilities shine so much brighter. Listen to these lyrics, her pen is utter perfection.
I found it online a couple years back and uploaded it to RU-vid. I dubbed a higher quality audio over the original, and rendered it in 1080p. It was private/unlisted while I was fighting the copyright strike, and forgot to switch it to public after I won the copyright claim. I just made it public a couple weeks back. It is a beautiful performance, and the quality is so good!
When Mimi sing this perfectly people says its lipped, but when Mimi sing this in different arrangement they'll say "she can't sing her own song perfrctly" 🙄🤌
Her ability to do whatever she wants with the melody of the song is impressing and demands lots of music knowlegde, ear and feeling. Wow. This is diamond
"All hail and bow to Mariah Carey, The Queen of Divas, Protector of the vocal skills from the realm, Archiduchess of Vocal range/registers, Empress of agility, The unmatched, The Mellisma mother, The Goddess of Songwriting and producing, The one often imitated, but never duplicated, The embodiment of pure success",. My simpleton ears are not worthy of your talent but a simple sung phrase will be enough to heal me for all eternity.
When you love someone so deeply They become your life It's easy to succumb to overwhelming fears inside Blindly I imaged I could Keep you under glass Now I understand to hold you I must open my hands And then watch you rise Spread your wings and prepare to fly For you have become a butterfly Fly abandonedly into the sun If you should return to me We truly were meant to be So spread your wings and fly Butterfly I have learned that beauty Has to flourish in the light Wild horses run unbridled Or their spirit dies You have given me the courage To be all that I can And I truly feel your heart will Lead you back to me when you're Ready to land I can't pretend these tears Aren't overflowing steadily I can't prevent this hurt from Almost overtaking me But I will stand and say goodbye For you'll never be mine Until you know the way it feels to fly Spread your wings and prepare to fly For you have become a butterfly Oh, fly abandonedly into the sun If you should return to me (I will know you're mine) We truly were meant to be So spread your wings and fly, butterfly (My butterfly) So spread your wings and prepare to fly For you have become a butterfly Oh, fly abandonedly into the sun If you should return to me We truly were meant to be So spread your wings and fly (spread your wings and fly) Butterfly (fly) So flutter through the sky Butterfly Spread your wings and fly Butterfly
Say what you want about Mariah Carey but I will say this, in my local area a young girl named Christina Williams was abducted. Eventually after a year of searching she was unfortunately found dead not far away from where she was abducted. However somehow Mariah Carey found out of this and sang this song for Christina Williams at a benefit in her honor. I always remember that...
This is such a crazy beautiful song… it’s such a perfect title song for the B̤̈Ṳ̈T̤̈T̤̈Ë̤R̤̈F̤̈L̤̈Ÿ̤ album which is one of the greatest pop albums ever written and produced.
OMG!!! 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 This is one of the most beautiful, hardest song ever created in this world, and can only be sung by great artist like Mariah Carey 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 Still listening to it and loving it more in 2021 😀😀😀
