Yes, she was inducted into The Songwriters Hall of Fame which is nice. But her voice is so amazing that you can forget! She writes too, she is something supreme!!!
A huge fact that yall should know about this album is that this was the album after Mariah escaped Tommy Mattola who was her husband, manager, and CEO of Sony Music who she claims was controlling and emotionally abusive. Butterfly the song was about herself escaping the marriage. And the beginning of the Honey music video is basically her being kidnapped and escaping like how she escaped her marriage. Tommy wanted her to remain pop and not claim her black side and do rnb/hip hop music and that's one of the reasons she needed to leave also. After this Tommy tried to sabotage her career a few times with stealing songs she made and giving it to other artists and telling radio to boycott her (which worked between 2000-2005).
“This space is too small for the horse”… That was the point. In the lyrics she says “wild horses run unbridled or their spirit d*s”. The horse was alone and in that smaller area for most of the video and then you see the horse at the end break free and run free with other wild horses. So both the butterfly and the wild horse running free were both used to symbolize change and freedom. Edit: O ok I see you figured it out on your own after I typed a whole paragraph 🤣
Spot on about the vocals in the 2nd verse.👌🏾 She manages to sing light/airy but still evoke emotion! - Also, in this song, she wrote all the words she wished her husband would have said for her to stay. 😢
Some people didn't understand and even mocked at the fact there were no butterflies in the MV, YET they failed to see that Mariah herself IS the butterfly, trapped inside the house, crying while on the branch of a tree. The horse represents her wild free spirit. The song tells what she hoped her ex-husband would say to her. He never said it, she left forever! She co-directed this video.
The horse has a meaning... specially the part when she says "wild horses run unbridled or their spirit dies" and it's pretty much how she felt during her time being married to tommy mottola
Love this song and the MV, it was shot in South Carolina iirc. Mariah writes or co-writes all her songs, including this one. The story behind this song is that it’s what she wanted her ex-husband to say to her before/amidst their split. When she was about to leave him, the butterfly engraved on her mantle stood out and inspired her to write the song.
@@TheKittsPajamas I love how she plays with her vocals up and down every few seconds, so pleasing to ear, it’s genius, not many can master that and still sounds good without sounding off
I love this Mariah Carey week Mike and Joe, Thank you guys for this, this is Awesome, I Love love Mariah Carey so much, Come Mike you need a horse, hahaha hahaha 🤗🤗
Mariah is darling… Yes!! We Lambs (Lambily/ Lambilies) been knew that since day one!! ❤❤ Great reactions as always. I appreciate you! I enjoyed you! Congratulations!! ❤️❤️
What’s so amazing about Mariah..more than any other artist, is her ability to beautifully arrange her vocals to provide the most wonderful emotional impact. Her vocals are so strategic and add to the lyrics she wrote. She properly uses her range and it doesn’t feel out of place ever. She has the most incredible voice and she is the greatest female vocalist ever so the lyrics and her penmanship is often overlooked but she’s the complete package. Mariah is a one of a lifetime talent with the voice and the pen of multiple generations. What a great discography. This song and video specifically is one of my favorites of hers. It’s the representation of the freedom she sought in multiple aspects of her life but especially within her marriage to Tommy Motolla. Her experiences with him is deeply saddening but even so, she sings from his point of view of her with the lyrics that if she should return to him then it was meant to be..then transitions to her own pov throughout the song. Despite the pain and heartache she endured in that relationship, you can sense that her transition to her own pure expression is both a beautifully freeing experience and also a place of acknowledgement of the hurt of saying goodbye as well. It’s so many realizations and the horses as well as the her symbolic butterfly become the images of her freedom…coming into her own, showing the world the Mariah that was kept caged. You see her smiling and riding the horse as these realizations and newfound hope and freedom represents a new beginning for her. I am loving Mariah week. I hope we get more in the future because she truly is an artist that deserves a deep look into her wonderful discography.
Her tears were actually real she was thinking about leaving her ex husband this was about him and how controlling he was. She still cared about him. Also she mentioned in a much later interview she realized singing soft can be just as powerful as singing loud and she does it with soo much emotion.
The 2nd verse feels like that because first verse she allows for air throughout but in the second she - physically - restricts her pure falsetto to the very top of her larynx and holds it there forever only dipping out for one second • verse one is an introduction to the idea of the song and verse 2 exemplifies her struggle to actually come to this decision
I always liked this song but it hits different after I read her memoir. At the time of writing, they were separated but she still thought they would be together in the end. It makes the song even more emotional and beautiful because it captures a brief window of time when maybe they could have saved it. If he had just said these words, she would have come back but he didn't and we all know how it ended. When I hear the opening piano of this song, it takes me to a really raw emotional place. It's like the last flicker of a childlike innocence right before it's lost forever.😭
Here’s a fact about Mariah. Obviously there are times where belting is necessary to present certain emotions but that’s not Mariah’s favourite thing to do. It’s those softer vocals the the guy in the black spoke about (I on’t know ya names yet but year is funny he mentioned that. It also makes her belting that much rewarding when she finally does get to doing it. Especially in later albums. Unlike say a christina aguilera who tends to si g louder alot more and can easily just go over your head.
I realize this stuff won’t hit the same with everyone. But growing up with this, during certain times, like with any music, many of the songs are a memory to our lives
The house in the video was supposed to be the same house from the Vision of Love video, or at least it symbolized sorta the end of an era. Her era with Sony, which was also her era with her ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, whom this song was dedicated to.
Whole the video showing horse, but the title is "Butterfly". It's metaphore of herself. When all trouble take herself into pressures... But she try to stand tall say "i can fly"..
I love this album and I know that @weeklytop5 only does reactions to music videos, but, her version of Beautiful Ones ft Dru Hill is the best song for me on this album. I wish Joe and Mike could react to it.😞
You should really listen to her doing this live on David Letterman... this song is impossible to sing and the way she delivers the vocal with emotion is next level!!

Don’t come for wallpaper! 😂😂😂 I still use wallpaper. I have it in my downstairs guest halfbath and my basement halfbath. I started to use it in my dressing room/closet as well but I changed my mind and decided to use stencil instead.
Mariah's Horse died that was at her upstate New York house she shared with her first husband. It's dedicated to her horse. The house eventually burned down. No one was ever charged with arson.
But I don't see no butterflies, all I see are horses. j/k. My favorite song from this album is the cover of Prince's "The beautiful ones.", too bad she didn't make a music video for it.
I guess she wrote this song in the perspective of her ex husband Tommy Mottola (he is the subject of enuncianion and not her; she is the butterfly), wishing these were the words and attitude of letting go that he would choose to take when she decided to set free from their marriage
