As great as Luther was, he had no business duetting with Mariah at this point. She was better than EVERYONE from a technical perspective. He did all he could to keep up and he just barely did. I much prefer hearing this without him, honestly. It's also really clear here that they weren't together they recorded their parts. I couldn't tell initially but with her solo vocal, it's obvious.
