I remember when that came in 1994 ;was an 8 year old Spanish kiddo who barely started learning English and struggling to understands the lyrics !SHIVERS DOWN MY SPINE TEARS TO MY EYES THAT BROUGHT when I heard it for the first time!!A goddess of beauty with her music I laughed and with her music I cried AND THAT’S HER LEGACY!!
It amazes me that anyone else would ever attempt to sing this song. OMG what ever this woman does in her life no matter how bad, she has the key to heaven after hearing this.

Celine does not need to prove her vocal range and power, and certainly not to Mariah, who cannot get close,... and don't get me started on Lara Fabian!!!
@@sandhyanagarajan Thank you for your kind reply. I only discovered Lara 12 years ago, having previously been a lifelong fan of Celine and Shirley Bassey. RU-vid "recommended" Lara to me, singing "Adagio". My life changed at that moment. For me, Lara is the only person allowed to dine at Celine's table,.... and vice versa!!!! Try as hard as I can, I simply just don't get Mariah. She always misses the message of a song (especially this!), preferring to demonstrate her undoubted vocal range, doing so at the utter dismissal of the song in question. Celine conveys the message of this very religious song, paying total respect to the message. Celine does not have to show off vocally, as there is no note that she cannot hit. I hope you check out Celine's version, as I would be most interested in your personal opinion, and your side by side comparison to Mariah's version. Kind regards, Brian.
Not a Mariah Carey fan but, that’s the best freakin Christmas song I’ve ever heard. Absolutely awesome! Somehow I get the feeling that the angels singing when Jesus was born must have sounded something like that! This song, the way she does it, makes me cry!

Mariah pays no attention to the message of the composition, which frankly, is a fault prevalent throughout her career. She just wants to show off her undoubted vocal range all the time, rather than convey the message of the song. Couldn't lace Celine's boots, which is why Celine, ..... and Lara Fabian, respect and adhere to the version that a composer intended and then produced. Celine and Lara's vocal range, as, admittedly, is that of Mariah), sit at the top of the tree. Unlike Mariah, Celine and Lara rightly have total confidence as regard their vocal ability. How many more years must Mariah completely jazz up every song she performs in order to fit the song around her vocals????? An arrogant, insecure artist, who has chosen to focus on her vocal ability, but forgotten that such ability counts for diddly squat if it is not applied to the song as created by the songwriter.
My mom and I played this album on loop at Christmas time when I was younger but never really pay attention to AIWFCIY until much later... but O Holy Night and Joy to the World are the ones deeply ingrained in me, Christmas season is not Christmas without those two songs for me personally.

Mariah always jazzes up whatever she sings, simply to show off her undoubted vocal range. The problem is that she does so at the total expense of the song, and, importantly, the message of the song. Celine does not have to show off her voice, as there is not a note she can't sing, nor hold for whatever length she wishes. "O Holy Night" is obviously based around the birth of Jesus. It carries a religious overtone by definition of same. Celines close attention to the message, admittedly due to her own upbringing, is clear for all to hear, her reverence actually enhancing her approach to, and delivery of, this most wonderful composition. Therein lies the difference between Mariah and Celine. That said, please don't get me started on Lara Fabian !!!!!
No it doesn’t. Mariah was blessed with a five octave range and her mother was an opera singer. Why bring religion into it? Brian’s reply fyi - The carol is religious yes, but Mariah’s vocal range is from pure talent. It is definitely the best version by far.

Some people only listen to this song around Christmas but I catch myself coming here and listening to it many times throughout the year. Mariah sang it with such power and beauty as if it was literally written for her and only her by God Himself. I'm not very religious but there's something about this song that invokes incredible emotions from within, literally anytime I hear it, and it's not something I could even begin to explain. I've heard some incredible renditions of it from other artists but, like I said, she gave her vocals to this song and managed to make it her own and that's not something I've seen anyone else do with it. "O Holy Night" from Mariah's "Merry Christmas" album is and always will be the only Christmas song that I could listen to over and over and never get tired of hearing.
She did it so effortlessly...made me feel like I could do it too until my dog covered his face in shame and ears in pain.😆 On a serious note, best version ever!`💯🔥

With the exception of the global success of her huge Christmas number 1,.... which finally got there after 30 plus years(!), her number 1s are all achieved in just the USA. She may have had more number 1s than Celine, but Celine's number 1s were not just in America, but throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Mariah is just an American chart act, admittedly with tremendous stats, but her global sales fall well short of Celine's, by at least 160 M. That is the fact of the matter. Americans have never been known for their taste, not just in music, but in all areas of life, and they are welcome to keep Mariah till the sun stops shining. As a Brit, I tend to cut the Americans some degree of sympathy, but they must remember that they are still working for us. To compare Mariah to Celine is like saying the CIA or FBI get even close to our MI5 or MI6, or our GCHQ.
