About the album:
Merry Christmas is the first Christmas album, and the fourth studio album, by Mariah Carey. The album features cover versions of popular Christmas tunes and original material. Carey worked with Walter Afanasieff, with whom she wrote all of the original tracks, as well as producing Carey's interpretations of the covered material. The album contains a contemporary holiday theme, and featured "authentic, gospel flavored background vocals." Three singles were released from the album, of which All I Want for Christmas Is You went on to become one of the best-selling singles of all time.

I love her rendition so much, it’s so haunting and beautiful. When she calls out for Jesus at 2:28 I always get literal goosebumps and at the end when she softly sings ‘sleep’ like a lullaby, so emotional!

Auto-tune wasn't around. They used pitch correction, even way back in the 1980s using Synclav or Emu EIII. Besides that, Mariah was doing take after take. Mariah was able to sing songs in bits and pieces, then put it all together (mixing). For example, "Silent night" stop.. "Holy night" stop... etc. She didn't sing this song or really ANY of her songs in ONE take... It's a STUDIO RECORDING. If she wanted to try a whistle note again and again, she could, until she "got the perfect take." Then take the best whistle note she did and put it in the song, deleting the "bad -crack-didn't hit note" takes. Singers like Mariah are great, but they're still human.
