This snippet is evidence and a sneak peek into how Mariah writes songs such as with Walter Affanaseif. If we imagine the pianist as Walter, he was playing the chords for Fly Me To The Moon, but Mariah already has a unique melody playing in her head that she sang (at 0:21). This wasn't even forced, it was just natural. It's simply innate to her. So incredible.
This is a 9 year old comment but i feel compelled to respond. A comment that understands the simple brilliance of this totally off the cuff, short but highly instructive display of Mariah's musicality and tonal melody and pitch ability. In 30 seconds she gave a masterclass in Voice without even trying. Its the small details. If you watch her face when she initially starts listening by the piano, with her eyes glancing away off-focus signifying her concentration. Her brain was rapidly taking in the melody, register and pitch of a song she didn't really know. In almost immediate computer-like quickness she has the sonic aspects analysed and starts joining in, not even knowing whete he might take the song next. 'Its a little before my time' sang melodiously in exacting harmony with his and the piano. Note also in general throughout the piece that despite the display of incredible musicianship, she remains humble and is self-deprecating about her contribution. Note how she, just like when she sang with Aretha, she holds back and lets the other singet shine, merely making small but sublime little contributions. She lets him 'bring it home'. Note how when he completely changed up at the end and paused and said 'its not the words', literally stopping the performance of the song to bring her into the performance rather than allowing het to keep to the background, she says 'ooh' and stops singing. When the melody became unknowable because he had paused, stopped singing the song and made it more of the 'duet' he was probably creaming his pants over once realising who she was, Mariah stopped. Showing that when there is sequence that can be analysed she can.but she waits to riff off what he's doing. Her last and most astonishingly great part was where she went into a soft high note that sounded like a purr and showed off a different colour of her tonal range, which evoked jazz. Its this clip which literally shows that the world had thus far been denied what is a self-evidently obvious but neglected pivot Mariah could and should make into exploring jazz. We demand a Mariah jazz album that id a mix of a few standards and original compositions. Jazz is sort of the opera of black music in the sense of irs complexity and the dexterity that is required vocally and melodically, because each musician in a jazz band has their own individual riffs on simple melodies which are used as a baseline for the instruments to use for coherent sound while also veering off into where each musician wants to take it. If mariah isn't a textbook example of someone who should be doing jazz then i'm not a music geek who likes to think he is good at music analysis. When she does that last high accompaniment, note agai the face and the concentration she directs towards what she hears before pitching perfectly the finale. The mariah singing moments i treasure are rarely from her standard big concert performances, where actually despite her greatness, she often exposes the reality of her discomfort with huge non-intimate shows that require that olympian level of vocal projection, which is a segment of the singing art most subjected to environment, change, rest and breath control, which is the one (because i am a fair critic not merely a sycophantic fan) area of Mariah's performances which is sometimes there and great sometimes not. Whenever a vocal performance of hers is criticised with 'she had lost her voice blah blah' what they are actually referring to is her sometimes patchy breath control. All she needs to do is vocal exercises which work to strengthen her naturally waning with age's lung capacity. Her vocalising can be compared to a sports performance, and requires similar physical endurance. We dont expect mike tyson to get back into the ring and beat a younger peak fitness boxer. But mariah is expected to be punching at peak physical strength. Unrealistic. No, impossible. She also wears outfits for performance that are not conducive to aiding this lung capacity breath control element. Tightness around the chest and diaphragm will prevent the deeper breaths necessary to sustain the power and belts. So she sometimes runs out of breath and thus energy. And puzzlingly, she sometimes takes breaths in moments that dont seem to be in the intuitive places, allowing the interruption rather than being more intentional about where in the song to take intakes of breath. If she merely worked with a vocal coach on techniques re breath, she would certainly not be able to be criticised for losing her voice. Because she hasnt lost her voice she's lost her breath due to perhaps an occasional lack of focus. Someone on mariahs level may not even contemplate using a vocal coach...shes MARIAH. But even the greatest should regularly practise with vocal coaches bow and again to iron out any neglected areas. So yes the moments i treasure the most re Mariah are the rare clips where ahe is relaxed, off the cuff, merely singing not performingz with no need to project her voice. The removal of the projection requirements of concert performing bring her plausible claim to being the actual most gifted vocalist in modern populat music. Yes better than Whitney whose only vocal element that was more great than mariahs was funnily enough, her projective ability, which made whitneys voice more powerful or loud. Mariah's pitching, genius-savant level melody abilities, and her sonic versatility and adaptability are unmatched. Except by maybe Aretha at her peak. When Mariah is just singing for the fun of it and not performing, you catch glimpses of the sublime. Hearing her little riffs on stuff, or jer joking aboout, you see her at her best. The impromptu jimmy fallon fan thing is the superlative example of mariah's singing showcase, and is a sort of more extended and extensive version of what this clip highlights. I am jealous of Mariah's team and her childrwn, because they will get to hear on a regular basis Mariah's not performing, but merely singing. There will be an inexhaustible suppy of the voice at genius level in moments that are sadly never to be recorded and which lovers of vocals are to be forever denied. Think of all the moments of her just singng and humming away that would show brilliance that will never be heard by the public. I would perhaps chop off a finger for the chance to be in the room where mariah is cresting and constructing her songs, with the pianist or in the booth. But on that score, not even her musical collaberators get to see those moments because she records alone in privacy. Since we are not realistically going to be able to follow Mariah around at all times for life to get the snippets we want, we can at least pray that someone will shake her to her senses and get her to see that a jazz album is her next career-defining successful resurgence. Its not a style that would sell the squillions, but Mariah has done that and had her time as the apex performer and the crazed fame that comes with the number 1s and the huge selling albums. She has the accolades, the history-defining milestones and record-breaking facts, she has the oeuvre and the legacy and the respect.
If you guys are keen, you will really notice how Mariah has defined her style. I mean if that was another singer he/she would have done exactly how the Frank did it. And mariah did this without rehearsing but still it sounds very Mariah
All you guys talking shit about the pianist... when fly me to the moon ends you can hear him saying "bravissima" which means "you are great" and then he says "she has the best voice in the world".
she's the best. it's funny how soon as the music started, she caught on to it, talk about a ear for music. and my favorite part is when she sings "it's a little before my time", her jazzy-ness is all over that line
This video is a testament of a true artist. Did you see how she was creating lyrics and melodies @ 0:21 to "Fly Me To The Moon" on the spot!!! Damn! Amazing. It sounded like a completely new song. She was in harmony to the song despite the fact that she doesn't know the song + so many more intricate details to her talent in this video alone. This is not something that can be taught unfortunately. You need to be born with it.
i suddenly got an idea: how interesting it would be to hear Mariah sing Lana Del Rey's "Million Dollar Man". just imagine Mariah singing in that silky whisper: *'you said i was the most exotic flower/ holding me close in our final hour.'*
Notice how she creates completely new melodies and lyrics from the chords at 0:20 all while singing with tone, purity .. effortlessly. That is true musical talent. I would've died if I was dining there that night.
that impromptu whistle and her tone were just out of the world. she really has great ears that can sense pitch and the ability to sing in tune and make those crazy runs
Whenever someone comes for the Queen, hit em with this video. Fucking. Musical. Mastermind. Watch how she's thinking of a melody to fit a song she barely knows as he is already playing it, then easily sings perfectly & beautifully 0:37
just a testament to her rare, magnificent talent....she freestyled and sounded amazing lol. id buy that little clip of "it's a little bit before my time....i dont know the words to this song but..." lol. i want that as my ringtone!!!
Holy crap, imagine being those people having Mariah start singing for them during dinner. What a treat!!! I'm so jealous! More over, wasn't Mimi lovely and so cute w/ them- sitting @ their table, chatting them up, making some transcontinental connections. Not a lot has made me proud to be an American in recent times...(just w/ some of our foreign policy- not overall!) but Mariah was representin' and I was super-proud. Her talent is a national treasure; she can sing anything.
I wish Mariah would do an all Jazz/Old Shool Soul album. I just think it's her element. I read (I think in Time) that she takes on a 'jazzy attack on pop material'. It doesn't matter though - she can sing the phonebook, she can sing anything. She'd sound magical anytime. Even at midtnight, with no sleep, with a glass of wine, walking in a bar in Rome, and just singing as it were.
I can't believe Mariah doesn't know "Fly Me to the Moon" wow! It's obvious that her mother being an opera singer she didn't get to much exposure as much as jazz as she did classical, and she's such a show off. Atleast it got her somewhere and it got her somewhere far. What a diva!
You're right, however, I do feel her last musical choice in the first song starting at 0:40-0:45 was genius. Her timing when she came in, ability to create the smallest semitone distance in the melisma to follow, and her vocal quality overall was genius.
Her voice is so versatile! like that sounded amazing! I dont really like the way she was kinda stepping on the pianists toes but I'll forgive her because her voice is just so ..wow
I like this vid... it seems as if Mariah's a good bit tipsy, but she's cool and laidback an shit... not the Mariah that the media tries to portray her as. She's awesome!
Like Mariah would say: OOOOOOOOOH MY GOOOOOODNESS!!! She could record an jazz album... I would buy it certainly. Her voice sounds amazing in this context.
I think you need to research what belting means. Belting is singing with full volume. Shirley Bassey did it in most of her songs, Whitney does it in for instance Didn't we almost have it all and Mariah in among others Anytime you need a friend.
BTW, that Mariah's friend is SIMONA... I had downloaded the full version of this documentary "What Is Like Mariah Carey Around The World?" Mariah is still rockin'! Hawt!
Mariah carefully pulled out those high notes & ended it all! I would be so nervous to sing in front of Mariah. Her technical ear is akin to the sensitivity of a Bloodhound's nose. A mess? The hell she was, she sound great!
Lol yeah I was surprised she didn't know the song as well. I'm much younger than her as well and I know it, but only because of people singing that song at talent shows. Still you can see her create magic even without knowing the lyrics with her own improv.
ly me to the moon Let me play among the stars Let me see what spring is like on A-Jupiter and Mars In other words, hold my hand In other words, baby, kiss me Fill my heart with song and let me sing forevermore You are all I long for All I worship and adore In other words, please be true In other words, I love you Fill my heart with song Let me sing forevermore You are all I long for, all I worship and adore In other words, please be true In other words In other words I love you
She should SOOOO sing Jazz more often. I remember hearing a song she sang from one of her older albums (it's called "Wind", I think. Correct me if I'm wrong) and she sounded so in her element. Her voice is perfect for Jazz
@jlenoconel First, this was in mid-late 2002. So she was 32 here. And Second, she just turned 40 few months ago. so she is not over 40 or whatever. AND she even said it's a lit bit before her time (insinuating that the song came out WAY before she was even born in 1970 of March 27.) so please correct yourself.
I'm sure your not referrin to Mariah, aren't you? I think the other girl aside from MC is her close freind or sumthing like that, Cuz I remeber watching this on MTV a long time ago!
I know! Remember her & John Legend's performance of "With You I'm Born Again," I think some of us Lambs prefer the jazzier singers & standards route, or maybe something more along the lines of Motown; which she did give us on The Emancipation. Oh well, she's in a very competitive line of work, and it is about holding on to those Lambs you have, and acquiring more; with finding a place between what you want, your fans want, the industry wants, and everyone else in between.
I dunno how they became friends but I just now that she's MC's good friend as stated by MC on that show... That's it! Why do you think she's annoying BTW?
@Cinquelini she wasn't willing to sing. She can't sing. She was a bit up into alcohol as you could see... She lost it, face it... she just shout off a couple words and they sounded bad... if she had a voice and wanted to sing, she would. She didn't because she knows she cannot sing anymore
This is like the most real I've seen her on camera before, and she's funny here. I think she started laughing about people being american, because she thought everyone was roman and didn't understand what she was singing. lol This was cool.
1. MARIAH IS AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL & DOWN TO EARTH! 2. Do you think the guy on the piano knows who she is? or just a random girl with a beautiful voice? 3. Her friend seems like she needs a personality transplant, lighten up girl!!!!
lmao at everything she is amazing can sing everything! I dont know the words of this song.. BUT;) Haha! funnyy and that fella didnt want to let her sing LMAO!!! he is funny I swear with his If I can make it here I'll make it anywhere
What's wrong with you people! He was doing his job! I'm sure if she knew the words to either of those songs, and have taken control of the performance, he would have just played for her. You uber-fans are nuts! Nuts I tell ya!
She piped in a bit and sang some Jazz riffs. That was a surprise for this oft-times Mariah -fan and Jazz nut. I'd love to hear more, M. You scatted a bit off the cuff... WHO KNEW?!!! Milk! Milk! I want more milk!!!!
I think you mean all the hip-hop crap, coz when she first started her career, she started with pop and she was very successful, and it really showed her vocal abilities, but the hip-hop just makes the song entertaining ONLY
@pmfa91 at the beginning she just singing that she doesnt know the words and when she sings with the guy she is singing 'new york' which i THINK is fank sanatra not sure who sings it.
The pianist should have let her to sing alone... this guys wanted to be the star... and, how trying to be the sta when MC is singing next to you....???
i love love mc but for some reason she doesn't give me "jazz" voice (NOT ATTACKING her just saying imo. please lambs dont start a long ass pointless drawn out argument).....you know i had to say it
I wish her middle sister Alison Carey could have released some albums in the past. And if she did or if she ever will which I hope I think it should be a Jazz album because Alison's voice is more Jazz influenced.
