Marian Shields was born in Chicago in 1937, as the fourth of seven children-five girls, followed by two boys-to Purnell Nathaniel Shields, a house painter and carpenter, and Rebecca Jumper, a licensed practical nurse. Her parents eventually separated. Both had mixed racial heritage. Marian's maternal great-grandfather, Dolphus T. Shields, born around 1860, was a descendant of slavery, with his mother being a slave and his white father being the heir of the slaveowner. Dolphus moved from rural Georgia to Birmingham, Alabama, where he established a carpentry and tool sharpening business. His descendants later relocated to Chicago during the Great Migration.
Marian married Fraser Robinson III on October 27, 1960, in Chicago. The couple had two children: Craig Malcolm and Michelle LaVaughn, the latter named after Fraser's mother. Fraser passed away in 1991 from multiple sclerosis.
