The real beauty of Rivera's game was his ability to land pitches dead in the strike zone that were still unhittable, night after night. Everyone knew what he was going to throw ... but that didn't help them.

Not just strikeouts, but so many soft grounders, choppers, comebackers, broken bats etc. he was also a great fielder on the mound, one of the more athletic pitchers in the game.

I met Rivera in 95 at the stadium I came early so he was signing autographs with a big smile probably 165 lbs then , he was unknown at the time and signed my glove. I figured by the looks of him he will be a nobody. I then went on using my glove to play baseball and softball and the autograph is long gone.!!!??boy was I wrong! ?And the rest is history! would of been something really special to hand down to my son . One of my biggest regrets!

I was talking to my dad the other day about Yankee greats. My dad is a lifelong Mets fan and Yankee hater - I prefer the Mets but it's hard to hate the Yanks, with their long history - but I found his thoughts on Mariano to be quite telling. "You might as well turn the game off when he comes in. It's automatic... he's only gonna throw the cutter, he's gonna retire every batter he faces, he's gonna break two out of three bats, and he's gonna throw about eight pitches." It's totally true.
@johnpaultse7792
@johnpaultse7792 8 лет назад
What I always thought was ridiculous about this guy was how his velocity was never that high. His pitches were just unhittable.
@josephcox3091

John Paul that's not true he threw 93-96 most of his career

+Joseph Cox around 2003-2004 he was regularly touching 97 with that cutter, awesome.
@iamhungey12345
@iamhungey12345 9 месяцев назад
@@Taylorslade123 Also given how velocity were measured different from the 1990s to now, Mo's mid-90s pitch in his early career probably would have measured in the same level as Jensen's hyped up cutter for all we know.

There's nothing more to say that's already been said about the career of Mariano Rivera. He was the most consistent and dominate closer the game has ever seen. And even though he had one pitch and The fact that everyone knew what it was and that it was coming, no one could any decent contact on it. Imagine being on the opposing team and seeing the demoralizing sight of him jog in from the bullpen with Enter Sandman blasting over the Yankee Stadium speakers. And no matter how good of an opponent your team is, you know that there's no way you'll pull of a late inning comback. The guy was an incredible athlete on the mound and an even classier and better person off it. I can't for the day when I get to see him give his Hall of Fame speech. Again, greatest closer ever and an even better person, I have a ton respect for him despite me having a huge dislike for the Yankees.

I remember a game where the Yankees were hosting the San Fransico Giants at the stadium in 2002. The big matchup was Barry Bonds versus Mo. With two strikes, Bonds swings through a pitch that Mo puts on the corner of the plate and just under the knob of his bat. Great example of Mo's control.

He was the best closer ever. I'd like to add that there are two players (probably many others) that really should have been voted to the Hall many years ago that still have not been. Gil Hodges of the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers/Mets and Rocky Colavito Cleveland/Detroit. Both men were feared sluggers in their respective leagues,both were clutch hitters and RBI men. Not to mention both hit 4 homers in a game and have better career numbers than many HOF's. Hodges lead the Mets as manager to the miracle 1969 win over Baltimore too. Why are these two men being snubbed??? Sportswriters suck! The players should do the voting,Many opposing players and former teammates have stated over and over that these two men deserve to be in the HOF.
