Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (1755 -1842) was a highly successful French portrait painter, particularly renowned for her depictions of women. Her father, Louis Vigée, an artist, introduced her to painting, and despite being mainly self-taught, she became a member of the Académie de St-Luc in 1774 and later the French Academy in 1783. Her breakthrough came when she was summoned to Versailles to paint a portrait of Queen Marie-Antoinette, leading to a close friendship and over 30 portraits of the queen. During the French Revolution, she fled France and spent 12 years abroad, painting portraits across Europe. Élisabeth’s technical skill, charm, and sensitivity made her one of Europe’s foremost portraitists.

Yes, I fully agree. Her portraits feel very close, intimate, and personal, as if she really likes her sitters and wants to give them a fair representation. We've started to see this as a pattern among female painters. Check out Sofonisba Anguissola, for example-also warm and intimate. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-38CErrvRu8I.html There's no doubt that Élisabeth was a smart woman! Thank you for commenting! We appreciate it!
