I read some comments that criticized the actor Cosmo Jarvis (Blackthorn) not putting enough emotion in his reactions in some scenes, but in my opinion his portrayal of a totally disoriented, confused character, in continuous difficulty to understand the language and the very articulated social dynamics is already in itself an interesting feature that makes the show flow, such as the addition of some nice, embarrassing and absolutely enjoyable and accurate cultural "shock" scenes. The natto thing was pretty funny though. Will miss Mariko Sama ❤️🪷

So basically Yabushige agreed to let in Ishido's shinobi (ninja) to come abduct Mariko to keep her from leaving. No one expected her to sacrifice herself, so Ishido's plan basically blew up in his face.

Yep, that was why Yabushige was trying to get them to go to the gate, so that she would get captured. But Mariko, growing up in that place and easily recognising what was going on, chose to go to the one place where they had to blow the door to get to her: she pretty much chose where to die.

As Vader said about Obi-Wan (telling Luke that he'll turn the sister [Leia] to the dark side): Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me. Now his failure is complete. In this way, Ishido's failure is complete. It began the instance that Mariko entered Osaka and was received by Ishido and the other Regents of the Council. Her purpose was to expose the fact that Ishido was holding the other Regents captive and thus, their votes were not genuine but the product of intimidation and duress. If Ishido would let Mariko sama leave Osaka, the other family members of the Council of Regents would similarly expect and in fact petition for their "release" or grant to leave Osaka. This would of course leave Ishido with no leverage over the rest of the Council members. If Ishido forbids Mariko sama's request to leave of her own free will and accord, it reveals that he is indeed holding her hostage. This not only then raises seriously suspicions that the rest of the Council members and family are likewise hostages, but also violates the propriety of nobles in Feudal Japan. Mariko sama is an emissary of Toranaga. As such, she by all rights should be free to enter and leave Osaka under the service of her Lord who is NOT formally in the custody of the Council nor Ishido as he has not been officially voted as a traitor or insurgent or the like and in fact, the Council did not formally vote to accept Toranaga's resignation. Mariko's death while in the care/custody of Ishido and under the watch of the rest of the Council of Regents is a huge and indelible stain upon all their Houses. The ONLY way the other Regents can escape this shame is to declare that they were helpless hostages of Ishido.Moreover, they will be forced to either be neutral, and not lend any military support to Ishido, or in the alternative align themselves with Toranaga. Mariko's death literally binds the hands of every one of them. While she earned freedom through an honorable death, in fact even more honorable than seppuku (or whatever it's called when women perform such a ritual), Mariko literally trapped Ishido. There is shame in allowing any harm to befall those who are "guests" in your House and more to the point, failing to protect those in your care or custody. The fact that it is assassins makes it even worse as that is a cowardly, dishonorable means of fighting/combat. Moreover, this of course raises strong suspicions that Ishido hired the assassins...thus branding HIM the coward and disgracing him.

Yes, Ishido could kidnap her, blame bandits, and hold all the other hostages in the castle for “their own protection”. All a neat little plan ‘blown up’ in his face.

It seems they weren’t expecting her to be with Blackthorn. If he wasn’t there they likely would have been able to kidnap her. He had his gun handy and shot the men that were carrying her away.

If this was rote Hollywood they would have had Mariko cutting down 20 Palace guards and walking out with a smile. Happily there was none of that crap. She's well trained as a high born Japanese noblewoman, many of them were but she would stand no chance against those numbers. The Guards were not even trying to harm her. Anna Sawai absolutely owned this episode. This is how you do strong female characters Hollywood.

Yabu "betrayed" Mariko etc. I say that in quotes because he already pledged his allegiance to Ishido so technically he wasn't because he was doing Ishido's bidding. The plan was to kidnap (not kill) Mariko thereby preventing them from leaving and also preventing her from making herself a martyr if she commits seppuku. What's so stupid about this plan is that they seem to have forgotten Mariko's willingness to die.

In actual history, Blackthorne and Mariko may have never met. When the Battle of Sekigahara occurred, Buntaro led his army into battle, but Ishido tried to take Mariko, who was in Osaka, hostage. Before being taken hostage, Mariko had her servant behead her and blow up the mansion. A descendant of Buntaro and Mariko is Morihiro Hosokawa, the Prime Minister. There are several episodes in which Buntaro was unusually fond of Mariko. There was hair in Mariko's cooking, so Buntaro cut the cook's head. The gardener was so fascinated by Mariko's face that Buntaro cut his head. Because Christ was a man, Buntaro cut off the nose and ears of the servant who indoctrinated Mariko into Christianity.

I think Yabushige was simply pretending like he didn't know what's up, so he was pretending to help Mariko and hi's team. That being said , i def don't think he knew Mariko is gna sacrifice herself like that, he prob didn't think Ninja had C4 to begin with.

Both nice and unfortunate they stayed true to the book with having the Shinobi kill Mariko. Though wanted her to live regardless, but I can see why they didn't stray from the book because of how important it was for her to be written out like that. As for John, he held the katana perfectly during the seppuku scene.

I love watching reactors, such as Trophy, who is completely immersed and loving the show being watched. Such high intensity stress and tension throughout the episode. Mariko, overcoming her inferior standing as a woman of disgrace in the 17th century, standing up to Lord Eshido in front of the entire council no less, was arguably a braver emotional display of her samurai fortitude, than her physical will in later scenes.

I'd actually argue that the show actually has some really good comedic elements actually. Classic Japanese direction and cinematography. When two people speak on intimate, very serious subjects, they actors are often placed facing away from each other, first focusing on the speaker, then to the other person listening. Sometimes there is very little emotion being seen as a reaction, Mariko, other times emotion is about to burst off the persons face, Ochiba. One is ice cold with the truth, the other can't bear the stark truth.
@khaii13
@khaii13 5 месяцев назад
Despite my criticism in previous episodes about how Mariko continued to handle her domestic affairs, especially after how the truth of as to why she was kept alive has laready been revealed; I do have all the respect in the world for Mariko, the Retainer. She fulfilled her duty and managed to say out loud what every Lord in Osaka was feeling but were too afraid to say. And she was committed to everything to the end. (Minor Tangent: I am happy the gate scene was not a "girl-power mopping the floor with all those men" moment) Now all of Osaka's Lords are soured against Ishido; and Ochiba might have to put the engagement on hold in order to Mourn Mariko. Her mission is a success. Speaking of which, its so heartwarming and heart breaking that scene between Mariko and Ochiba. I'm Happy Ruri-hime did not just outright hate Mariko for being her father's daughter; but their exchange was so heartbreaking as they both knew each other so well and what the other was doing and them pleading with each other to make the step to end the hostilities, and saying their goodbyes like that... i think I'm sweating through my eyes. And Blackthorne finally doing the right thing and deciding to Second Mariko, instead of just dismissing all of Japan's customs and cultures as BS , that was the best gift he could have ever given her. Mariko chose where to meet her end, and did not go to the gate where she would get captured as Yabushige intended. Yabushige also left his vest with bloodstains when he raised the alarm to act like he was also surprised. He is not getting out of this alive.

to me that scene was cringe and unnecessary, the fact she stood up to ishido in the meeting the day before was far more empowering.
@khaii13
@khaii13 5 месяцев назад
@@n4murr that’s fine. Like I said, there are more badass moments than this one. It’s ok if it’s not to your taste. As for me, I like the fact that we got that one last moment; and that, at the end of it, Ochiba was not this one dimensional big bad, after all. This does nothing to advance the main plot, the whole meeting with Ishido accomplished that, and yes, that was the more powerful moment. But the one I just commended was a moment for those characters alone.

@@n4murr oh yeah it was. But I am actually happy that it simply played out like that. I was actually worried they would play it out like some “girl power: look at me taking down all these men” moment. Thankfully they played it off as authentic Japanese politics, allowing Mariko to visibly reveal to everyone what all the lords were feeling but were too afraid to voice out themselves. Heck the spearmen were not even engaging her, they were simply surrounding her. It’s all part of the theatrics and all played out as per plan.

@@n4murrthat scene is political. and it's the kind of real life theater that happened very often in east asian histories, especially during feudal eras. it's a cultural thing that the japanese and chinese share in the old times. you obviously are just experiencing a culture that you know little about. it's not cringe; it's just something other cultures wouldn't understand quite that much

Toranaga was so selfish by sacrificing his best two team members just to start a fkn crimson sky plan which we will have no time to see it fully I believe. Anna Sawai did a grand great job by carrying the whole show on her shoulders. no offense, but I see her efforts are overcoming the rest of crew. Cosmo Jarvis was not the best one for this role, they could have been chosen someone else way better than him. Many scenes lake his emotional reactions which can be also seen in his real character out of the show during the interviews with the cast. if that show was long, I am not sure it will be the best show to keep watching without Mariko.
@OwnYourBaldSpot
@OwnYourBaldSpot 5 месяцев назад
Well they only have to make it one episode without her, it is only a 10 episode show based on a book. Mariko is based on a real person who died in the same circumstance, in a slightly different way. He did sacrifice 2, but in doing so, how many lives were saved? But on the other hand, morally, can we even make that choice? Brings up a lot of philosophical questions I also think Toronaga growing up as a hostage greatly impacted him and how he thinks
