One of my favourite tracks. Was at the Albert Hall last night to witness another epic performance. They seem to get even better as they age I've always loved Floyd, but in my opinion Marillion sit alongside them as the best of British
Why I love Marillion, they are not afraid to take the audience on a journey like this and then tickle your feet with something like 3 minute boy. No band around like them.
Hi Jim,the great escape you did way back was a unbeliveble re-discovering for me. I only knew the fish period and i never dig That, but steve hogarth is really amazing. What a singer and song writer. Thank you for That, My little brother and Best m8, became fans to, all thanks to you and your channel. 😃
At this point, it'd be close to a crime not to react to Marillion's "The Invisible Man". Or give "Go!" from their Royal Albert Hall performance last year a go. Don't leave us hanging for another three months, Jim! :)
These guys are so much better live. I've seen a lot of live shows over my 63 years the top being Led Zeppelin deep purple ,van Halen, Metallica and Tool. I am so looking forward to seeing these guys live when and if they come to Sacramento. Marillion is brilliant live.
One of the best songs they ever written with "H", i can almost smell the sea listening, this and Neverland from the Marbles album are gems, love this music, great review
Hi Jim. What a mesmeric piece of music. The story, the music, Steve Hogarth and some good summary from Jim himself made this a very enjoyable video today. All the best to you all out there. Dave✅✅
Marillion is my favorite band, and I've seen them live three times. It's always a crazy journey and I am always speechless at the end. Absolutely priceless
H can play guitar but it's Steve Rothery is guitar. And h plays keyboard, mainly piano. He also does 'h natural' where it is just him and the piano. H is amazing and they are very united unlike the Fish it always felt disjointed to me especially at Live at Lorely. Imho.
Marillion - my true love. I myself didn't find this as capturing as the album version. The mix wasn't quite there. But this IS a great song! Speaking of storytelling, Jim, listen to Marillion's songs like The Space..., Gaza or Out of This World. And you haven't still checked out bands The Flower Kings and Transatlantic! But thanks for Marillion!
I was at the concert at the Mariilion Weekend in Port Zelande, NL, back in 2015!!! They played the whole of Marbles, incl. Icean Cloud! It was pure magic!! Oh, and I copy Tony Furminger's suggestions!! (i.e. This Strange Engine live and The Invisible Man)!!!
The look on your face and emotion is exactly how I feel when listening to Marillion, I find them to be such a wonderful escape ! I've not listened for a while, I've missed them!
Tiejs van durh Zaan. Hey that's me! Thanks Jim, glad you liked it! A lot of people around here recommend you to listen This Strange Engine (sort of about his own life), or The Invisible Man. I have to so I agree haha. But I'd like to add Interior Lulu, one of my favorites. Especially if you like very progressive Yes-like songs. Oh and also.. from their latest album (I can keep doing this for a while btw..) F.E.A.R - truely a great album - check out The New Kings. Epic. Continue the Marillion Journey! Looking forward to the next one.
Yet another video where your enjoyment is so clearly visible, which is what I really appreciate with you and your channel. Listening to and really also feeling the music. Marillion's never been in my rotation but I do like the heavy live sound they've got going here!
Definitely the Invisible Man next. Whilst that and This Strange Engine both have the descriptive quality you're looking for (and are both fantastic) The Invisible Man is more cryptic, leaves more to the imagination, and for that reason is more interesting to me. But both are more than worth a listen.
Do Gaza next.. it's a bit of a difficult one to listen to, and it made one think. Marillion helps a charity that runs music to all..trying to get the kids to mingle of each side of the wire with the power of music to heal. Oh and Out of this World.. it's about Donald Campbell breaking the world speed record on Bluebird (I think it was bluebird). He did break it... but he wasn't happy so he did another try next day. But ge crashed and died.
Jim, I stumbled upon your show just last night with Neverland and boy it blew my socks off. I’m jumping onboard a Marillion Trip! ... ps... think there’s a Panda jumping about in amongst that wallpaper 🐼 🌱😂
Hai Jim, Please do a review of Marillion the invisible man from the Marbles in the park live dvd/bluray Its an absolute masterpiece of a performance from the band. Its just breathtaking to see the amount of emotion H (singer) uses in his performance Also please do "this strange engine" as well, thank you 👍🏻😉👍🏻
This is definitely one of my favorite tracks of Marillion, it has such power and feeling to it. And I also wanna say how much I've enjoyed your joy from getting into Marillion. Haven't seen all those videos yet, but really hope there is one where you react to "When I meet God", another favorite of mine. Also wanna add that I think these videos deserve way more likes than they got!
Jim, did you go online and read Don Allum’s story?? I found several pages, INCLUDING HIS 77 DAY DIARY of his last voyage from Newfoundland to Ireland in 1987. Once you do, you’ll get a proper understanding of Steve’s performance and lyrics. Simply a stunning real life story and apropos song about it.
Hey Jim I hope you've listened to this at least 20 × 2 get it. Hogarths vocals in this are brilliant.. I really do love both versions of Marilion. Many songs from the fish days can not be reduplicated and the next Marillion Was just as good.

Uncle Progstead did I hear you say a bas cuss word ? I like listening to the atmosphere they’re making with the keys and the drums I also like when Steve nods to Ian and he crashes the drums they’re a great team. I loved the up tempo rhythm it was like listening to TOOL
Good to have another Marillion reaction. This Strange Engine has already been suggested as I would second Out of This World as well, another song based on real life events and emotions.
Marillion do have a thing about tragic stories involving water, don't they? Chelsea Monday, Out of This World, the entire Brave album, Estonia, Ocean Cloud...
I am going to keep pushing Cosmograf. (Robin Armstrong and guests) In your own time if you have any, there is a clip of Robin talking about his music in preparation for a new album in April but also his past music and the music industry.
Thanks Jim, well done, would love if you could do the song called "Splintering Heart" it use to be the opening song for Marillion concerts, it s a fantstic song, happy easter :)
I so wish I would have seen these guys. I saw Pink Floyd I saw yes and these guys are like a combination. I've been listening to their music since the early eighties and I was never driven to go see them live. Mistake
Just so nobody else will get the wrong impression, Marillion are still making new albums and regularly touring. I new album is due this year, and tours will resume when possible under current law. Their last album, F.E.A.R., resleased in 2016, was voted in many places as #1 Prog Album of the Year. Make your own wish come true.
Steve Rothery is very much a guitarist in the same mold and caliber as David Gilmour. They don't feel any need to show off how fast they could play, they just want to pick the best notes for the song. And they also both realize that there can be parts of a song where the most effective thing is silence. Very much going for the melody, and for notes which will evoke emotions that match the song. And for me, this clocks in at 17 minutes, which seems like it'd have to be too long to keep the attention of the listener. And yet I get to the end of the song and think "That's it? They're stopping already? That went by quick!". That's because all the music and lyrics here pull the listener in, and get them wrapped up in the story. Great song, off of a great album.
Another guitarist like this would be Andrew Latimer of Camel, IMO. Check out videos for some of their songs, like "Stationary Traveller" or the older "Lunar Sea".
Why haven't you done a "This Strange Engine and the invisible man" reactions yet Jim? I love you're reactions and would love to see your reaction to those 👍🏻😉👍🏻🙋🏻♂️
@@JimNewstead lol have another one for you...... Not Marillion but amazing nonetheless..... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Utz4gFG3HF8.html Thanks for your reply Jim 😉🙋🏻♂️
Say too me that this isn’t pure brilliance. Than you must be sick too your head. Soon there will be a new album, I got them all and Cary them with me to my grave. It will be the last thing I’ll wil be hearing at my funeral.
I have a subscription to Prog....AND Classic Rock, and Planet Rock, and Mojo (like the lay-out in that one) so yes,I'm that sad individual who digs out publications and information on all things classic rock/prog/soul. Going to a record fair 120 miles away tomorrow because some bloke on a stall there promised he has a pristine copy of a first edition of Led Zeppelin I. Nerd? Maybe, but its nerdism of the noble kind to me.
This song is brilliant and I've listened to it many times just like I do what tool songs. I'm glad they don't get as much play as other bands do because it makes them try really hard to create just brilliant music. This music should be just as popular as everything else. But it's not and that's fine with me. And I totally loved the fish era to a bunch.
I’m having a hard time getting into the Hogarth era Marillion it’s certainly not bad at all but I don’t listen to it very much. The only Marillion albums I completely adore are A script for a Jesters Tear and Fugazi. Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws are great as well.
He's been their singer for almost 30 years, it's possible that you simply don't like Marillion that much. The band evolved a lot through the years and recently it's become even more complicated and not for everyone. Script for a Jester's Tear and Fugazi are much more palatable.
