Notice the planes square windows, this was a design flaw that caused planes to disintegrate mid flight, with disasters occurring in 1953 and 1954. Following these tragedies the windows were redesigned to round.
@@koleyw932it comes from the costume department. She often borrowed from them for public events. That's why you see the dress from gentlemen prefer blondes on her during a winter trip to Korea to entertain troops.
@@BrickCityEllA -- Yes, I certainly remember those types of glasses. (I'm that old!) 😏 They didn't look good on me either. Maybe I should have had some 'bling' added. 😄
This movie and Some Like It Hot are really the best of Marilyn: light comedy, and the combination of “innocence” and “bombshell” in just the right balance. Seven Year Itch has a slightly creepy edge and some of her other roles weighed her down a little, especially the more serious ones. In this film, you get to root for all the leads and there’s no villainy or sadness to spoil it. All ends happily.
Marilyn considered her serious work to be her best and she was really tormented about being stuck in typecasting and not being able to take on all those serious, complex roles.
I wonder if she would have thrived better in today's Hollywood where comedy is more respected. There are still limitations for actresses, but look at the range of roles Margot Robbie plays.
@@koleyw932maybe. It all depends on who is judging you and who you seek approval from, I think. Grace Kelly was respected as an actress, but her family never cared how many Oscars she won, for them, that career choice was for trash folks and they wanted her to go into politics and philanthropy, as she came from upper class society. It never mattered that she married the Prince of Monaco. Meanwhile Marilyn would've loved those classy roles Grace Kelly had. But Marilyn had no family to "stick it to," the way Grace did. But I find it so interesting that Grace's family had so much pride, they didn't allow themselves to be proud of her. Not to mention public perception. Consider that Grace Kelly legitimately came from high society, as was the title of one of her greatest films. Try to imagine Marilyn playing in "high society"... consider the image. Grace, stunning and gorgeous as she was, didn't have the figure Marilyn had. I think people found Marilyn's character more relatable on the whole though. Everyone loves Grace Kelly but who do we talk about more as the years roll on? Whose films do we watch more? High Society or Gentleman Prefer Blondes, etc?
She was so great in everything she did! Oh Marilyn I’m sure you shine even brighter (if that’s even possible) where you are now. What a legacy and legend she left here on earth. What a spectacular magnificent woman! ; it’s mind-boggling how no one has come close to what Marilyn did, to who she was and how she sparkled. We only got one ☝️ I just love her so! ❤ RIP Angel! Love you forever! Thank you for this upload Mark 😊
Marilyn was a great comedic actress! Her timing is perfection. I wonder if she played an instrument. Many great comedians played an instrument, and it perfected their timing.
She looks good in anything, but her glasses are not for nearsighted, look, they made her eyes even bigger, they are reading glasses 😂 But her mannerism and her voice are so precious, i wonder if she was like that in real life, all silk... Sleep, Dear Beauty...😢
My cousin is a film historian and has been on CNN & Turner Classic Movies channel, her books sold in stores around the nation. She wrote on Marilyn. Anyway, Norma Jean (aka Marilyn) hated these films .. she wanted to be taken seriously by the academy and desired the more "Grace Kelly" type films or like Audrey Hepburn. She hated this dumb blonde persona. Her marriages didn't last. I can't imagine seeing her angry for real or anything when I watch these films, but I imagine she had her moments. Her life was tragic in her youth. Tragic in totality in my opinion.
People assuming older movies always had an issue with beauty standards because of something like the "taking off the glasses to be beautiful" trend of the late 90s/early 00s drives me batty because of a scene like this.
Compare the glasses that were taken off vs the glasses put on. Her glasses had diamantés and had the very flattering feline cat eye shape. The glasses in other movies the girls had taken off were bulky, had old fashioned designs and basically unflattering.
@@iliketoastems I think back to the frightful pair Stephanie had in Full House, lol. It's so strange, it's like strawmanning glasses essentially to imply they're always ugly when you only showcase ones that don't suit a woman. Mine are like a round/cat eye hybrid and my boyfriend agrees with me I look better with them on, just like in the scene. Go figure. 🤷♀
Here she was. Iconic MM herself showing us a girl with glasses is HOT! Yet we had 90s showing girls with glasses taking them off to show the pretty face and even in 2023 we have Barbie movie using it as a bs bias
If I were that male, I wouldn't say a single word to that blondie! Her hair is well starched! Her neck scarf is shinny - complementing her hair colour. Her gloves are matching her hair colour. She's fishing for that one dish that will feed her a lifetime... 🤠 Now, I understood! Why Dua Lipa moves her lips, mouth and tongue in that certain way. Women are conman! Marilyn gave me the eyes to see Dua Lipa for what she is worth - an old maid nevertheless !!! Thank God !! Callum bought Dua Lipa for real ✅ They are both a long term item 😮
Is MM really acting or does she pretend that she is acting 🙂? I think it does not matter, because She could always absolutely rely on her phenomenal presence and impact in front of the camera ...
This was a comedic scene. It's meant to be silly and the writing is on point for that. Try watching something more serious like Casablanca for memorable lines.
@@shutinalleyActually, only a 'simpleton' in your words, would think you require a specific format for humour. Some humour is subtle, not a standard 'joke' format with 'punch lines.' Also, context matters. This scene is about the irony of thinking women cannot be beautiful if they wear glasses. Having one of the most beautiful women of the era put on glasses and pretend she was worried she was no longer beautiful, underscores the ABSURDITY of this notion and pushes back against it without being rude or aggressive. Using humour to make an actual point that makes people's lives BETTER, thar has undoubtedly helped the self-esteem of countless young women who wear glasses, is worth a lot more than stock jokes relying on punch lines. And it takes more intelligence to understand the message in subtle humour than one that hits you over the head. It doesn't have to be a movie you enjoy. People can have different tastes. But you not liking something doesn't make it badly done. You don't make the rules on what is ACTUALLY clever, and you not being able to understand it is actually an argument for the writers being cleverer than you!
'Aren't you funny? Don't you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You might not marry a girl just because she's pretty but my goodness doesn't it help?'
@@cmm5542 Nothing like the subtle dry humor of how shallow people were back then where the nerdy millionaire impresses the ditsy sounding hot blonde pretending to wear glasses because he knows better. Yeah, the lead content in people was strong. I'm sure you were alive long enough to get a taste.
she reminds me of Britney Spears not gorgeous but super adorable very attractive extremely charming and strong stage presence insane sexual charisma all of that matters !!
