You may remember a similar video I did some time ago, where I compared 4 idiophones. But this is different because in this video, I talk only about the similarities and differences between the vibraphone and the marimba, and play more on both of them!

I just came to hear the difference in sound and I ended up watching the full video. It was very interesting! It even made me want to learn to play those instruments!

While I enjoy the sound produced by both the marimba and vibraphone and the artists who play them, I can't let telling you about a favorite vibraphone artist of mine slip by. If you get the chance to listen to Mike Mainieri, I believe you will be very favorably impressed. I searched for several years for an album of his after hearing a song one night on the radio. I now have it and it is entitled "Wanderlust". I very highly recommend the songs on this album, in particular "Crossed Wires". Since you appear to like avant garde music, I would definitely give Mike Mainieri a listen. Anyway, while the marimba and vibraphone are both a bit difficult to throw in a bag and take to your gig, they are absolutely heavenly in their tonality and exceptionally versatile in their musical application. Excellent presentation James.

Love the look of the vibraphone, nice detail on the legs. The marimba is a beauty too with all that wood.

The marimba has to be one of the most, if not the most, stunning instrument to hear in person. The way it fills a room with a powerful and at the same time comforting sound is just amazing.

I remember this instruments fondly from the movies in the 1950 and 1960, all the bands from South America Lucille Ball husband band comes to mind. And then they disappeared from popular music, pity. Recent sub, having lots of fun with your lessons and how much you love to talk about all this different instruments. Thank you and cheers from Canada!

I once played with Gary Burton when I played the Hammond B-3 with the American River College Jazz Band back in 1970 and 1971. Every semester we would have a famous guest artist play with our group and we would have an awesome concert with that artist. It was an awesome honor to play with the best vibraphone player of all time; however, on the downside, Gary did not like the Hammond Organ and instead asked me to play the piano. I did not perform well on the piano since I am a Hammond Organ player at heart. Nevertheless, it was a major peak in my musical experience. Thank you for providing such a wide variety in your content. No one else does this.

I had a Marimba once -- took lessons --- was having a terrible time with it. Could not read sheet music and play at the same time. Instructor said you need to memorize the music - or one eye on the instrument the other on the music. And he also said 'no blind people play a Marimba'. I gave up and donated my instrument to our local high school for their band. Great video -- I can see Lionel Hampton behind the Vibraphone now.

Thank you for explaining. I really didn’t know that the vibraphone had a spinning disk. Funny! Sounds good. I like both. They just both got there own specific sound. Really nice. The first pieces you played good easy be a ringtone. 😀. Thank you for sharing and playing!

When I think of these instruments I think of Martin Denny and his instrumental Quiet Village. Martin was a pianist. Don't know who played the vibes on that 1958 recording? Still a fav!

@@ThePianoforever Don't know if this would interest you or not but I think I'd be interested in helping you defer your costs (assuming you had to buy the dgx660). Since I'm relatively sure this is the model I want, maybe I could buy from you after you do the review, that way you don't get stuck with it after?

There are vibraphones that go down another half octave to the C. Those lowest notes can get a bit harsh sounding, so I don't imagine anyone will make vibraphones that go lower than that with pure aluminum bars. I'd be interested to see if other metals would work better. Who knows? Maybe we'll see steel vibe bars come back some day!

Thanks! Very interesting & informative. I sought out a video like this in prep for an upcoming concert: Jeremy Pelt Quintet. Quintet includes my new musical find (in addition to the very fine horn player Mr. Pelt), Chien Chien Lu. Check out her 2019 concert video where she answers 2 questions: Who plays both? Can marimba be a jazz instrument?
