92Y.org/Talks | Marina Abramović spoke with Sir Norman Rosenthal at 92Y on Jun 26, 2013.
On performance art, Marina explained: "It's all about energy. And energy is something which is invisible. You can't hang it like a painting on a wall. You have to feel it."
Does she describe herself as a political artist? Mr. Rosenthal asked at one point. "No, I don't want to be in any category," Marina told him. "I'm not political artist. I'm not a social artist. I'm not this, I'm not that. You know, the art has to have complexity and have many, many layers at the same time. Otherwise there will be just one. If it's political, it's like old newspaper; you read today and tomorrow it's old."

I Look after myself, I make my mistakes. But I’m not too cruel on myself. Please, don’t worry too much, love, what other think. They may suprise you, in how much they are mystified, laughing and loving.

Only recently discovered Marina--a huge soul emerging from her art triumphant in a life lived so much in the present but mindful of the past. Brava, Marina.

Marina is a force of nature. I admire her as a person, as a woman and as an artist.She is so focused. She always had such courage. In her performances there is always a challenge. She challenges and provokes. she explores the limits by challenging and continuously expanding them. I am really curious about her time in Brasil, I want to see that footage with the shamans etc.

I really have no time to read magazines. I just happen to know her - or , rather, of her as we used to have quite a few friends in common back in the days when we both were living in Belgrade . I followed her "carreer" with interest from the humble beginnings, performing in the student cultural center in the above mentioned city. I found her truly fascinating even then. No place here, nor time to explain what limits she expands and challenges. I'd say it would be pretty obvious ...

I had the same initial, negative response to Sir Rosenthal, but as I watched longer, my perspective shifted. Later in the video, Abramović is short and even a bit rude with him. It's quite refreshing to see actual human beings interact - rather than the super polished, fake stuff which the public is usually served. This video, if considered as a social-experiment-sort-of-performance, fits perfectly with the topics that Abramović explores: the exchange of ideas & energy, limits & humanity.

Marina has clearly connected to who she is. The interviewer is projecting his misunderstanding into the interview. It might have been nice if he had mostly listened to her.

The name of the kind of art in question is CONCEPTUAL art and it is done in the form of performance. Marina has been active for 30 years . Her concept was always exploring the human nature- it's various aspects - sexuality, aggression, prejudice, relationships... lately she is focusing on exploring the limits - or rather- limitations of the human mind and the psysical ones too. Her method is always the challenge, she is always quite provocative and she was never afraid to expose herself to extreme in her performances. Throughout the 30 years of her work she remains inspired, motivated and consequent in her exploration of what is the humanity all about. There is not a trace of anything commercial in her work and yet, I am glad to see, she acquired a high degree of recognition and success . The kind of art she creates - practices remains avant garde. Most important is that everything she does carries a story, has a concept. She questions, she challenges, she is provocative and she is so courageous. I don't know if this helped to enlighten you. I hope I could at least give you some kind of framework through which (I'd suggest) you should check her work throughout the 30 years. Personally I think she is pretty amazing.

Marina is a wonderful personality. Her honesty and purity is rejuvenating. The interviewer did an awful job though. Instead of inspiring her into a great conversation, he provoked her and irritated her. No wonder she had to leave in the middle. Ignorant man.

Her idea with the blood drops is really curious. The idea of a special blood of important persons is crazy, for me some kind of fascistic. I was a fan of her but i m surprised of this idea.

She applied the Patanjali Yoga method to heal herself from the rubles of war, and after gaining fame, calls "direct experience," a phrased coined by Patanjali, as her "method." The appropriation, also plagiarism, of Indic/Vedic consciousness rhetoric by westerners knows no bounds. Jung did the same... why not Marina? Even Yogic Pranayam is part of "her method"... Amazing
@alldayHK
@alldayHK 7 лет назад
she also plagiarized Adam and Eve, cause they were the first people nude!! Seriously, this is how dumb you sound. Her "method" is simply a compilation of all the things that work for her. She's in no way saying she invented Patanjali Yoga wtf
