hello! today we're talking blues harp! I'm here to give a testimonial and some opinions on the hohner marine band. These are just my opinions, and I may be right or wrong
I've played Marine Bands for 45 years including working with R.L. Burnside for 12 years. Even when they were bad I stuck with them. Occasionally I'd buy something else, but the Marine Band 1896 was IT! The Crossovers are slicker, play faster a bit, but the Marine Bands have a kind of soul the other ones don't have. Little Walter didn't play a Crossover😎 But, they are expensive compared to some East Top's 008k and some chromatics. I teach, or play on my channel, but not doing gigs any longer.... But if I WERE it's Marine Bands.... about the High keys I love them especially the Pre War Blues stuff. Check out my pre war harp videos on that.... My first Marine Band cost $5.00. I like what you are doing. You sound great.
@@formansbasement2311 Yes, I remember. I like your easy stye like Dirty Pat. I have to get notified about your videos. I'll do a demo on these new Easttops 008k. With the low F it's great.
Great video. Im a raw beginner playing (badly) for about 4 months. Started out with the Hohner Blue Harp in C. Been toying with the idea of picking up a Marine Band in A for a while for something more mellow sounding. I think you have convinced me to get one ASAP and subscribe!
Thank you for Recognizing that most of these show and tell harmonica videos where the audio between voice and harp is so annoying! Nice not blasting out my speakers by wailing on your harp at the start of the video. You had me laughing so hard. Finally someone gets it.
I wouldn’t even know where to begin, most of them are done in one or two takes and on the spot, I don’t really know what I’m gonna play. I’d have to tab everything out note by note. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll do tutorials
@@formansbasement2311 You should do. You've got some great licks. Worth a shot putting out a few small tutorials. Thanks for your videos though, I find them very informative. Cheers
Hey brother, great videos I just discovered you, from one Harper to another I appreciate your stuff. Hey just wondering if you've ever opened the back of your special 20s? I primarily play rocket amps now, but I have a few special 20s that I've opened the back up by pinching them back with a pair of pliers and it makes it not so ugly plus you get a little more volume out of them. Anyways, you've got a new fan. Great playing too. Take care brother.
I have a special 20, and 2 ms series, I play blues style and several other types of music, a mixture of several different music in the same song, btw, SUBBED
Let me be very clear that I am DRUNK, not in a good mood. It's a common mistake. You wouldn't wanna see me sober on the average day 🤣 good to see you too bro
@@formansbasement2311 Yes I've One in Bb . It's a good harp but not better than special 20 or Easttop t008k or pro 20 . It is very similar to Golden Melody about sound & tone. You can call it cheaper version of Crossover . But Crossover is more airtight & fun to play . Thanks for your asking.
I'm from the UK and have 50 plus harps of many different makes, and yes, i think the special twenty looks cheap, and your favorite, doesn't look much better, but boy do they play well!
The packaging is to deter shoplifting. Sticky fingers begat blister packaging. I used to prefer Hohner's Big River to the 1896. Guess they stopped making them, tho.
In addition, it is the best to play on the rack. The Deluxe model is more refined, but if you only use it to accompany the guitar, not as a solo harmonica, the Classic 1896 is the best harmonica.
@@formansbasement2311 Thanks bud! Great review of the Marine Band. I started playing about 6 months ago so I have a lot to learn! I only have a SP20, Rocket (A) and a Suzuki Promaster. One day I’d love to try a marine band. I’m gonna wait til I get a little better. Right now I sound like crap no matter what I’m using! 🤣. I learned the hard way already that an expensive harmonica won’t make you sound better! I waisted money kind of on the Suzuki. Live and learn I guess. Thanks for the videos!
@allenhawker3911 it's always worth it to have a quality harp bro! Sometimes you don't realize what you're capable of until you play a harmonica that's just right! Thanks for watching, good luck on your blues harmonica journey
I wasn't around in the 80s,, but the marine bands coming out of the factory now are great! You can tell its newer stock if the paper inside the box shows a diagram for the new golden melody. Thanks for watching!
Played with many… Except from the Crossover , the MB1896 is my love. The vibration is spiritual . I open the back (fold the back ) so it sounds like a crossover almost . I used to play SP20. Far from the MB1896 imho .
