Sir please do answer my doubt... Why don't we use radar for finding depths and speed of the ship instead of echo Sounder and Doppler log( both uses sound waves). As far as we know sound travels much slower than electromagnetic waves and also sound waves has lot of limitations and errors?
Radar uses radio waves, which are electromagnetic waves. EM waves get scattered, absorbed or attenuated when they try to travel deeper into water. This is a very big limitation. This is also why sunlight barely exists in the deep sea. Sound on the other hand, though having other limitations, does not have this limitation and so can travel to great depths. This is why echo sounders are used for measuring depth.
