My take on Grimaldus' reaction to being "left" on the surface is not that he's pissed that it's a suicide mission or that he's gonna die, but instead that he's denied the chance to take the fight directly to the Orks in the orbital battle and the glory from dying on the offensive. Instead he's put on guard duty in this hive city. "-Don't deny me this glory"

So the black Templars use a loop hole in the codex astartes. Do to the constant crusading they get away with having more than 1000 battle brothers. If a chapter is in a crusade they can create more battle brothers. And so they are on a eternal crusade
@nikpapado9785
@nikpapado9785 3 года назад
"Isnt there 1000 Astartes supposed to be a whole chappter" Well yeah, but then again not even the Black Templars know how many they are. They have something called Sword Brethren (replacing their scouts) and each Astartes has many of them following him. Someone said that the Black Templars are like Super Man, their power (numbers) are always just enough to save the day They are waging an Eternal Crusade for over 10.000 years, they are at constant war all the time, their numbers diminish and grow constantly, so they need a large supply of recruits. So they are alot more than 1000 Brothers, but then again there is nobody in the galaxy who can enforce the 1000 rule upon them. Not even the Inquisition.

A normal chapter is approximately 1000 space marines, however the Black Templars rejected both the Codex Astartes and the Imperial Legislation prohibiting legion building and after ten thousand years of Crusade are over half legion strength with over 6000 marines under their colors. If they were all to show up in one place at one time it'd basically be game over for whatever they showed up to shit on.
@erayergi
@erayergi 3 года назад
they are also using a loophole, crusading chapters don't have to adhere to the 1.000 marines rule because there will be casualties eventually and they need to be replenished, that's why it's allowed to go over 1.000. Having over 6.000 marines is a bit too much though, that's why they keep it a secret and if they're found with more than 1.000 marines they say "some of them are trainees, not full marines so they don't count" and they really don't count by the rules as written.

What you saw was a recreation of Commissar Yarrick's last stand at Hades Hive. Yarrick fought an Ork Nob in single combat and lost an arm, but he managed to decapitate the Ork, cut off its Power Klaw and hoisted it high in the air, which sent the mob running. Despite his injury, Yarrick managed to stay on his feet shouting orders until he was absolutely sure the Orks were routed, whereupon he lost consciousness. Yarrick had the Power Klaw refitted by the local Mechanicus so he could use it himself, and he became famous among both the Imperium and the Orks for his sheer resilience.

I want to adress two points: 1-The Black Templars: they are a fleet base chapter that don't follow the codex astartes rules, they are one of the few chapters who has more than 1.000 battle brothers, in fact they have around 6.000 thousand marines and each marine has a neophyte (basically a pupil who's enhaced well beyond regular humans but lacks the dicipline and skills of a full battle brother,) so in reality they have around 12.000 soldiers. 2-Sebastian Yarric is a beast: there's a scene in the book where one astartes interrupts the comissar and dismisses him as "only a Human", and all of the other astartes basically tell the young battle brother to shut up, Yarric is one of the VERY few unaugmented humans who has face an ork warboss in melee combat and not only actually won but did not fainted or show weakness in the presence of the ork horde or his soldiers despite missing an arm and being completly out number, just like grimaldus said "His name is sebastian Yarric, even we astartes must respect that name", this is coming from a black templar one of the chapters that see regular humans and guardmans as little more than cannon fodder. Oh and finally that last scene where squad grimaldus is on the ship flying over helsreach and nerovar (the apothecary) ask "how can we defend all of this" and Bastilan (the sergeant with the bird helmet) answers "with blade and bolter, with faith and fire" those where grimaldus own words, grimaldus teach that to Bastilan probably decades before when he was only a chaplain... Wich hits really hard because it wasn't grimaldus who answer nerovar, it really shows his mental state at the time.

A codex compliant chapter is roughly a 1000 Astartes but the Templars wipe their ass with the codex and have way more, idk the exact number but according to the warhammer text to speech podcast it’s over 6000 nearly full legion size
@DankworthBalthazar
@DankworthBalthazar 3 года назад
I think cannon is 5000 to 6000, but its left deliberately vague. Neither is anywhere near full legion strength. The legions were generally 100,000 to 200,000 marines before the Heresy. Ultramarines were the biggest at something like 250,000, with Raven Guard and Salamanders among the smallest at something like 80,000. Thousand Sons, White Scars, and Emperor's Children were sometimes hinted to be smaller, but still in the tens of thousands near the end of the Great Crusade. Raven Guard were down to about 4,000 after the Dropsite Massacre, which was so small that they were considered no longer a viable fighting force until Corax made some Raptors and proved everyone wrong about discounting him. All the legions got cut to at least half size by the end of the Heresy, with Salamanders and Thousand Sons being cut to modern chapter size, some others not much better.

The best part about it is that nobody's really questioning why Black Templars are appearing all over the place. The Inquisition is clearly not very good at figuring out these Astartes... Either that, or I am missing some rather crucial information regarding this topic.
@DankworthBalthazar
@DankworthBalthazar 3 года назад
@@camomurf5182 It's a mix of a whole bunch of things. Partly, you're allowed extra recruits while on crusade and the Templars are on "The Eternal Crusade" at all times. The crusade excuse will normally only let you get away with maybe 200 to 300 extra marines. They also claim that the 1000 limit only applies to full Battle Brothers, not scouts/trainees, and most of their extra numbers are Neophytes, which are trainees in power armor. There's also the fact that they're scattered all over the galaxy in a bunch of different crusade forces, so who's going to be able to get an accurate count anyway? Add to the blatant loophole abuse the fact that they are super loyal and very effective at killing traitors, so most Inquisitors aren't interested in doing a proper inspection anyway. Don't try to fix what isn't broken. Also, the occasional uppity Inquisitor who puts his nose in too deep tends to get shot by "ork snipers" while counting Templars on a battlefield.

6:10 No, they didn't. You are right: a space marine chapter is SUPPOSED to have no more than 1,000 Astartes at any time (a measure taken after the Horus Heresy to better contain any future rebellions among them), but the Black Templars don't take the Codex Astartes too seriously. It is unknown how many of them there are (if they knew, the Inquisition would surely want to have a word or two with the High Marshal), but there are probably several thousands of them.

I recommend watching Arch's War for Armaggedon series, it explains in details his rise to fame and what happened on wider scale on the planet. In short, Yarrik was a commisar who retired on Armaggedon but once the Orks invaded reinstated himself. It was pretty much under his leadership that many of the cities survived until reinforcement arrived and counter attacks could be made against the invaders. As for his age, the Imperium has rejuvination treatments, which is basically a medical procedure where for a time your aging stops. It doesnt make you younger or anything it simply stops you from aging further. The richest of the rich and most important people have access to this tech, thats whats preventing from primarily from dying of old age. Besides that, medical technology in the Imperium is comparitvly extremly advanced so even normal people have good chances of getting 100 year old, the rich and important get easily hundreds of years if not closing to a millenium if they make heavy use of cybernatic implants

The Black Templars do not care for the limit of 1.000 astartes and do not count their scouts as actual space marines. They are a chapter of the second founding with their primarch Rogal Dorn just rounding up all the "problem childen" into their own chapter, led by Sigismund his former second in command that had "fallen out of favor". And Sigismund hated the break up of the Legiones Astartes into chapters and are now about 6.000 astartes and 6.000 scout marines, tho EVERYONE has different numbers and the discussion never stops. Being in constant warfare for 10.000 years and often separated from their brothers, they just recruit whomever they can find, you can never know when you find new aspirants or how many casualites they will suffer in the next battle. AND THEY WILL NOT SUFFER THE THOUGHT OF HAVING TO STOP THEIR ETERNAL CRUSADE BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE THE BODIES TO THROW AT THE ENEMY. The inquisition is always on their heels, but how to count them when they are all over the entire imperium and have no desire to be counted. They simply deal with anyone coming to close to the truth , after all being an inquisitor is a very dangerous job, there can be any amount of unfotunate accidents.

"Isn't a chapter supposed to be 1000?" Their supposed limit is to be 1000.. unless you're crusading/expecting heavy losses. Since the black templars are always crusading, they're kinda loopholing the rule. It's also the "problem" of them being spread out all troughout the galaxy, so it's hard for the inquisition to go around and count exact numbers, but the time they're halfway, the numbers will have changed radically. Just a side note, there are more templars in the city than just squad Grimaldus. He is in charge of them, but we mostly just follow his squad and what they get into.

as some of the other comments say, we don't really know how many Black Templars there are, but it's rumored to be somewhere between 2000-6000 men strong. the normal limit is a thousand in order to keep chapters weak enough that no one chapter is strong enough to overthrow the Imperium if it turns traitor, but there's an exception in the law that is something to the affect of "This limit doesn't apply while your chapter is actively on crusade." The Black Templars are technically never not on crusade because the minute one war is done, they declare another so they argue that the law doesn't apply to them and they can be as big as they want to be, so they've just been building up for about 10,000 years and growing as fast as they can recruit more marines than get killed in battle

Astartes are impressed when they realise that ordinary men, so weak, with paltry gear, fight the same battles as they do. You will see more beautiful examples in this series.

couple of things here. First, you gotta get these out faster. I understand that you want to space them out but this needs to come out faster. As for the Black Templar, they are rule benders when it comes to astartes rules. You see, an astartes chapter is able to have more then 1000 standing warriors at a time IF they are in a Imperial Crusade. Since the very beginning of the chapter has been in a crusade against the enemies of mankind. Now they have like 6 crusades going around the galaxy fighting the emperors enemies. Because of they are always fighting wars there is no good estimate how many standing astartes warriors there are but it is estimated to be around 6000.

It's not that grim is pissed because it's a suicide mission...black templars are not into defence or guard duty...as a chapter they're all about being offensive, attacking the heart and going straight for throat of the enemy...to them there's no glory in babysitting some hive...they want to die taking the fight to their foe.

while chapters are by law no more then 1000 marines some have shown a blatend disregard for that rule, the black templars being one such chapter with only the high marshel knowing how many marines his chapter has

Grimaldus is worried not that it is a suicide mission. He is full expecting to die, but what he wants to die in a mission that means something and lead to a great victory. He sees Helsreach as a pointless through away mission and not worth the time of the Astartes and to defend it will not mean victory in the war. Plus he has a bit of doubt in his abilities, and that he not worthy of being the highest Chaplin in the Black Templars. He is seeing being kept out of main fight in orbit a bit of the same way. In my opinion anyway.

I think one of the reasons Grimaldus was so upset is that the Black templars are a fleet based unit, and he's being sent planetside. A bit like a US marine unit specialized in boarding enemy vessels being denied that task and sent to guard an embassy. A part of it definitely seemed to me on first watch to be him being promoted to a new rank just so he could he sent to die, basically a political maneuver- "we have to pledge someone important to die but we dont want to lose anyone important" sort of move, and think that's one of the more accessible themes without context. I know another context mentioned by some is that Grimaldus had survivors guilt when his superior died, and doesnt feel up to taking on his position. Perhaps he wanted to prove himself and relieve his guilt while surrounded by those he knew and in familiar territory, not be isolated from everyone, in command of a company fated to die.

It can also be seen as him being sent to Helsreach to test him, and to buff out any scuff-marks of ascending in rank too quickly. One has to remember that Grimmaldus is fairly young for a Reclusiarch at the point of the second Ork War for Armageddon, and that the only reason he was chosen from among the many hundreds of chaplains in the Black Templars is because he was recommended by the prior Reclusiarch.

Yeah about the Black Templars "only" having 1,000 Astartes. (BUAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!) You are correct about Codex Compliant chapters having 1k Astartes however for one thing the sons of Dorn never really liked the book overmuch, and are too useful to the Inquisition Ordo Xenos to be openly called to the carpet on not keeping their numbers limited. If they weren't stretched over the "entire" galaxy performing multiple crusades at once, they would indeed be a problem.

@@steelgreyed I mean, deathwatch kills WAY more xenos then the black templars ever could. Plus they mostly have way more then 1000 due to abusing a loophole saying stuff about 'crusading chapters' in order to have 5000 to 6000.

@@johnpbauer The Black Templars never stopped the great crusade, despite being on the front lines of "just about" every single major battle that's worth fighting for 10,000 years. I will agree they are not an Inquisitorial pawn, my statement is they are doing their job too well for the Inquisition to drag them to a carpet and spank them. It would be devastating to the Inquisition.......

By the way, just so know it is suspected that the Black Templars have a lager than average Chapter. There true numbers are kept secret by being a fleet based chapter. They may be between 2000 and 5000 marines. Hope they are since the fall of Cadia and hope Inquisition is not monitoring this commit.

Even though a Space Marine chapter is suppose to have a thousand Space marines, not everyone knows how to count in 40k. Thus some SM chapters are Legion size (10k+ SpaceMarines). Space Wolves and Black Templars are such chapters

SM are not there to protect the people per say - Black Templars in general are not know for caring about mortals.....I mean from the SM chapters 2 are known for actually caring about normal humans - Salamanders and Space Wolfs (who went to fight the Inquisition to protect a planet). Understandable though - if you are 200-1000 years old and Superhuman in every aspect from Intelligence, to speed/reflexes/strength, you aren't probably going to care about those you see as beneath you......SM are there to coordinate and command the defense forces. I mean I would prefer the person who gives command to the army I am part of, to have 200-300 years of experience, no fear and is not at all shy from diving into the fight.....
