It’s customary for them to say “ Good Morning “ or a simple nod of the head if they are engaged in conversation to the sentry after the door is opened.The sentry however will never answer back so as not to disturb their conversation.

I think that it’s one of those jobs where your presence being acknowledged is about the most you get.

Add to that, when you swear an oath to the constitution of your country and have to take the life of a enemy combatant in a justified conflict, that is recognized as COMBAT.
