F1 World Champion, four-time IndyCar title-holder and Daytona 500 winner, Mario Andretti is the first guest in a special podcast series marking 100 years of Motor Sport‘s publication
Andretti has been a regular in Motor Sport‘s pages for more than half that time, and is still making headlines, with plans to be the first to test the Andretti F1 car, if the team is granted a place on the grid.
He joins Rob Widdows to recall a career that made him one of the sport’s all-time greats, from watching Stirling Moss and Alberto Ascari as a spectator, to meeting Colin Chapman, succeeding in F1, and then racing against his son.
Andretti explains why his passion for racing has never dimmed, which led him to Le Mans aged 60; saw him driving IndyCar’s two-seat car into his 80s; and gives him the desire to travel the world again as part of an 11th F1 team.
“Motor racing is our life. We have nothing else. That’s the way we’ve fed our families from day one,” he says.

Mario is immortal and is still sharp as a tack. He was the greatest of all-time, competitive in anything he drove. Hoping to see him soon in the Andretti Global pit in F1!

I was at the Queen’s Hairpin when Mario took the lead in 1977 at Long Beach. It’s not very often you can hear the cheering over the sound of the engines, but you could that day . . .

Mario Andretti is one of the best. Humble well spoken man. I was lucky enough to see him race at the first Molson Indy Vancouver with his son Micheal , A.J. Foyt and other great racing drivers .

I shook hands with Mario in 2002 at his winery in Napa. I was 36 and I was awestruck. Perhaps the greatest all around driver of all time. My hero for sure!

Very few all round drivers like him. Vic Elford, Matthias Ekström, Walter Röhrl, Sebastien Loeb, and a few others.

F1 Listen up. Lets get Andretti F1 moving!! Don't be scared cause you know they gonna kick ass. And F1 lets race the IMS oval. The banking is not that high. You have to race all types of tracks and that would guarantee a huge new audience and more money for your greedy pie slices

Since 1970 more Americans have stood on the Moon than the top step of an F1 podium. I don't see that changing any time soon. Feeling glad we have one of those men here today, Even if he wasn't born on the Fruited plain. Having your hero from when you were 9 years old on a podcast when you are a grandpa may be just as rare.

This is a great interview but I can't help but wonder why "Divine Providence" didn't choose to protect all the great drivers Mario knew who were killed following their passion. Mario was a gifted racer...and more importantly, very lucky. No "Divine Providence" was involved IMO.

I would have liked to ask Mario about Firestone and how that company helped him get started and cross over into so many other series. From the start of his career he did test with Firestone and anywhere cars raced on Firestone he was driving them. Also any mention of the years when Nigel Mansell was his teammate at Newman-Haas and the rumors of bad feelings between them.
