Mario Andretti is legend . Back in 70's the Saturday before the big California 500 Indy race . The city of Ontario had a California 500 Parade. Mario Andretti was in the Parade. I ran up to Mario Andretti and got and still have he autograph . The California 500 Parade was such a cool event.All the race drivers were in the Parade as it went Euclid Ave. In Ontario, California 🏁🏎🏎🏎🏎🏎

That must have been before Mario Andretti became a household name. Yeah even a lot of Europeans dig the guy. A versatile driver who further influenced the rear-engine revolution to AOWR (American Open Wheel Racing) by talking Colin Chapman into attending the 500. Famous for the introduction of the full-face helmet, invention of the _'Gurney Flap'_ and pioneer of the customary celebration of spraying champagne in the winners' circle after he Foyt won Le Mans in 1967. One of the few drivers to pressure Jim Clark into a mistake (1964 Race of Champions, Brands Hatch). There's quite a bit of accolades to shower him with. For me it's his 1967 performance with his Eagles in F1 and USAC races. Nevermind Spa, the fact that he is seen in multiple photos mixing it up with the almost invincible Lotuses and Brabhams is what indicates how good he really was.

Mario is ever the diplomat, so this all low tone. Another example is his comments about Ronnie Peterson. Ronnie said he always would respect his agreeement and contract to be number 2 when both Mario and Ronnie alone were in the running for the F1 title. But Peterson always raced to win/ lead during the races when they ran 1-2. Ronnie with the public assumption that he was quicker, which was part of the story, always claimed he just wanted to lead for a while to prove he could. Mario leaves it at that. A real diplomat because Mario was the much greater driver and while possibly not as quick as Ronnie, racing was still about passing in 78 and Andretti was a great hard duelist for any sports standard. And Ronnie certainly tried
@joshhill5932
@joshhill5932 5 лет назад
European opinion was Peterson was faster but qualifying doesn't lie. Andretti consistently beat him in Qualifying.

Mario's lone F-1 championship in 78 came at a great price. His teammate friend Ronnie died in a crash that same day. Mario was also cheated out of his second Indy win in 81 when Bobby Under passed people under caution.

A diplomat. Similar to Jim Clark he certainly carries himself in modest yet humorous way. I would have to add that I thought he handled another disappointment at Indianapolis in 1982 - again from no fault of his own. He gave a slight push off on Cogan and said some unfavorable words about him to the camera, but that was it. In fact I'm surprised that AJ Foyt didn't clobber the guy. I sure do miss those two characters.

I don't even think Diablo's can comfortably get that fast on public roads without the car being setup properly and perfect conditions...I'd say it was at least a Murcielago or an Aventador (depending on when it took place).

Gosh.... A speed beyond my comprehension. I did 115-ish (legally) on one or another Autobahn on an unfaired motorcycle and it was enough. Mirrors buzzing, vibrating and useless. Chin bar on dials. No idea what was behind me. You had to look back under your armpit, or the air could rip the visor off. And even back then (80s and 90s) there were cars hailing past at 140mph+ Not something I would do now. 183 is simply staggering. But... I suppose he did that for a job.

You wish you could be as bad ass now as Mario is at 80+ years old, he could still beat your ass on any track, anytime. This man is a legend, could drive and win in anything, sprints, stock cars, indy cars, formula 1, endurance racing cars. This man has earned respect and is still a very down to Earth classy person in life.
