This is from a rare reel-to-reel recording of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco interviewed on the Los Angeles radio program Music and Sound in late 1958. This episode is titled “Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Segovia” and focuses on MCTs compositions for guitar up to, and through, the Guitar Concerto in D. The moderator is Michael Inman.
Audio transfer and restoration by Lance Bowling, Cambria Records.

This is so wonderful! I love Segovia's renderings of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's music.

Great insight into MCT's fruitful partnership with the guitar. Amazing that he could compose Omaggio a Boccherini only a year after first encountering the instrument. Delightful interview with a most charming and urbane gentleman. Thanks Jim for adding the wonderful graphics and letting the world experience this!

James Westby, finding your account is like finding a rare gem. I am in awe at some of the rare "treasures" you have in your eclectic collection and look forward to listening to all. It will take me some time, but I plan to tell all my friends who majored in music with me decades ago. Thank you for all of your dedication, research, translations - truly a work of love.

The first performance of the Capriccio Diabolico was not in London as he says but actually in Madrid, Teatro de la Comedia on the 8th of November 1935. Thanks for posting, first time I actually hear the voice of Tedesco.

+Benjamin Bruant Ben, thanks very much for this bit of info. The official "works list" document did not list a premiere. I am just starting to fact check MCTs comments. He also "mis-remembered" the date of the first LA performance. The year was 1950, rather than 1951. Thanks again, I am glad you enjoyed this. Jim

+James Westby The program of the premiere is pictured in Alberto Poveda book, page 271

+James Westby Actually Tedesco wrote London in his autobiography as well, either it is a mistake either Segovia "premiered" it twice. (and I would not be surprise about it) But I do not have any program from his London concert...

+Benjamin Bruant Thank you very much for this info. I am now working on the English translation of his autobiography and I will make whatever corrections are necessary. ;-)

Amazing Interview! Thanks for posting! I would like to hear a good conversation between Segovia and Castelnuovo-Tedesco, such nice accents! :)

Thanks! Yes, Mario's accent is fascinating. If would be great if there were a recording of Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Segovia in conversation. I wonder what language they would use. I know that they wrote to each other in French.

Few will know that Castelnuovo-Tedesco taught many of the future Hollywood composers, including Andre Previn, Henry Mancini, Nelson Riddle, Jerry Goldsmith, Les Baxter [who was expelled after he was caught cheating on class assignments]. Castelnuovo-Tedesco ghosted several of the scores attributed to Herbert Stothart.
