It's a dramatic tenor, a well developed one. Today they just don't exist, not because there are not born such voices, just the technique is different and worse.

But also there aren't many born with that voices...

@@TonyMontana-os7kg When Del Monaco was born, there were 2B people on this planet. Now it's almost 8B. So there should be 4 MDM's today. Like Lady Bathory said above, people are born with talents and voices like these but they are just not trained properly.

@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee well check out Kirsten Flagstad singing Dido's lament by Purcell. She is the only one using her full voice. In everyone else's interpretation you can hear breathiness and nasal sounds. That's mostly what you can hear from today's singers. I don't see that as a blessing. About the agility, Callas is an example of agile voice with dramatic abilities. Joan Sutherland as well. And many other lyric and coloratura voices who sang perfectly their own repertoire

​@@andity1 Absoloutley true. Dramatic born tenors and sopranos are highly underestimaded and bad trained these days. For example, Tarja Turunen was a always a dramatic soprano and for years she was trained to be a mezzo and lyrical soprano because no one understood the power of her dark and unique voice. Later she became the singer of Nightwish, and she had the chance to explore the full potential of her range. Now she is one of the fewer dramatic sopranos you can find singing classical repertories on stage. They are such unique diamond voices but modern schools of music are not prepared to train them.

А открывание рта под свою же студийную запись называется - "фанера". Это специфика телевизионщиков. Когда снимаешь живого исполнителя, всегда есть риск наснимать артиста не в форме или мало ли что еще. Тогда снимали на пленку, а пленка - дело не дешевое. Чем меньше дублей - тем менее затратным является ваше производство. И с монтажом потом меньше возни. Поэтому такая форма работы - и страховка, и экономия. Я не говорю, что Дель Монако пел живые концерты под фанеру (бог с вами, вы что!), я говорю, что данный конкретный фрагмент снят именно так; и так снимались абсолютно все, если снимались для телевидения. Да и сейчас редко встретишь телеверсию какого-либо действа, исполненную живьем. И связано это не с отсутствием талантов у исполнителя (по крайней мере в данном конкретном случае). Надеюсь, теперь понятно объяснил?

Зачем все это вы обьясняли? Видно как у певца технически правильно поставлено дыхание, вспомните, во время его приезда к нам, после выступления в Большом театре целый час пел в живую для толпы поклонников, которые окружили Большой театр. Восторг!!!

Albert, it is always the matter of personal taste. I liked Giuseppe di Stefano when he was young in early 1950. Later Monaco, Corelli, Bjorling and Bergonzi prevailed as my most favorite tenors of the post WWII era... Bulgarian tenor Nikola Nikolov was very good as well...

He is considered the best DRAMMATIC tenor of the XX century.Also Franco Corelli the best Spinto Tenor...Both have more large voice and power than Pavarotti who is a wonderful Lyric tenor....after Caruso the tenor of the Century-Gigli e Byorling..they are considered by the press the best

...don't forget the great dramatic "Heldentenöre" Lauritz Melchior and John Vickers !

Hai ragione ragazzo. Hai perfettamente ragione. Il timbro e gli armonici, il registro ampio, direi quasi sterminato, fanno di questo strabiliante tenore qualcosa di unico e irripetibile, almeno fino ad oggi. Era pienamente consapevole di quello che le sue corde vocali potevano spingersi a fare, maniaco dello studio, perfezionista, Ascolta bene quel "quando la luce splenderà" a 1:15, e capirai che non è solo un tenore, ma un baritono che cantava anche da tenore, e, anche un tenore che spesso faceva il baritono. Nessuno nella storia della lirica è arrivato a tanto. Incredibile. Questa registrazione del 1954 non è neanche una delle migliori, immagina. Ascolta e riascolta con molta concentrazione l'aria di norma del 1957 "Meco all'altar di Venere" e scoprirai altre sfumature portentose.
