Am I the only one impressed by how quickly and precisely Abney navigates the menus between cups? It actually stresses me out more to watch that than most of the racing because I always worry he'll choose 100cc or something by accident because he does it so fast.
I might be misremembering but I thought it defaulted the menu to the CC you played last. I could be wrong though, it's been a hot minute since I played the game!
So far in the first few minutes, while he's running Mario Kart, all he talks about is running Mario Kart. I hope everyone finds something in life that they enjoy that much.
Man, what an absolutely outstanding speedrun! I love seeing people being so passionate about this game all these years later. Hopefully we’ll see a mk64 revival, seeing that it’s being released on the switch soon!

Super strange. The voice actor of Toad is a different one than the Toad in my German PAL version of the game. I didn't know there were differences and I don't know why they changed it.
Die japanische Mario Kart 64 Version hat auch Stimmveränderungen bei Luigi, Peach und Wario. Auch interessant ist, dass richtige Firmenmarken in diesem Spiel beworben werden. Japanische Importspiele waren aber auch schon immer höchst interessant.
Bronytendo English version the Japanese also has vocal changes in luigi, peach, and wario. Also interesting is that proper corporate brands are advertised in this game. But Japanese import games have always been very interesting.

Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Wario all change voices in the Western releases versus the original Japanese release. Luigi and Wario are instead voiced by Charles Martinet, who is their official voice actor and has been since the late 90s (hence why Luigi and Wario sound like you’d think they would in the Western game, but not in the east). Luigi and Wario went through a lot of voice changes at first. Some renditions used Charles Martinet while others used different voices (or used higher pitched versions of Mario’s voice clips for Luigi). Luigi’s voice was solidified with Luigi’s Mansion and Wario’s voice was solidified around the same time too. Peach’s voice change was to have her voiced by the same voice actress that voiced her in Mario 64. Toad’s change... I have no idea. Maybe they thought the Japanese version didn’t sound English enough? I don’t know
Abneyyyy! Your runs give me so much. Long story short i had kids young, got divorced young and really lost myself. Life really got to be too much for a minute. But I literally watched one of your world record runs and something clicked it sent me down a rabbit hole of great speedrunning content and it just did so much to just help me relax. Breathe. never watched your videos before...i just finished watching this run...that was absolutely amazing congrats, you deserve this feeling! I'm not actively following the mario kart speed running speed runs so this may have been beaten many times...but i enjoyed this a lot...thanks for posting
Hey Abney. On Choco Mountain, I feel you could've saved almost a minute if you: 1. Fell into last place. 2. Was lucky to get 3 mushrooms. 3. Went back to the start and executed the Weathertenko. Just a strat if you want to break the record again 😉

that's very impressive i couldn't do that as a kid. also what's interesting is that your version of the game has different voice actors, different circuit names and the billboards are also different. japanese version but with different english names.
NTSC-J had some potential copyright issues, like Yoshi1 being a Mobil1 parody, Marioro/Marlboro not being exactly appropriate for a kid's game. NTSC-U had that all changed.
I've played this game for 20 years and I still get nervous watching him to the power e slides around some of those corners, especially in Sherbet Land.

There is a reason people are still playing this game...Although I might prefer the original SMK a little bit more, this one is right up there was one of the best. SMK and MK64 are by far my two favorites...then DD (and maybe Super Circuit on GBA) and then everything else. I'm not really a big fan of the newer ones. They've been made to be too easy for casual players to where they have a good chance at beating pros. Too many racers...MK is supposed to be 8 racers. Too many items, and too many race-changing items, for sure.
Speedrunners have a different awareness about these games than us plebs. But they all seem so dispassionate about what they're doing. Aren't you having fun, bro?
