I go over all the different wheel accessories Nintendo's released for Mario Kart games throughout the years. Main Channel: @ScottTheWoz Twitter: / scottthewoz Facebook: / scottthewoz Instagram: / scottthewoz
This style always reminds me of Classic Game Room; a gaming web series that looks at pretty much everything gaming. And these really feel like the hardware reviews.
@@lewatoaofair2522 Daaamn bro CGR. I remember I learned so much about gaming and its history from that channel. Pure gold mine for the culture. AVGN taught me a lot too. It's a shame CGR kinda disappeared and AVGN is a shell of its former self.
@@lewatoaofair2522 To me, Scott evokes that feeling I used to have when I was a kid and I gawked at Normal Boots and AVGN and I learned so much about games! I know pretty much everything Scott talks about in his videos but I would say it's the only remnant of quality left on Gaming RU-vid. That and maybe Caddicarus with his shitty takes and whiny attitude and Eruption with his mechas. What do you think?
And the motorbike handles! Both are absolutely atrocious to use, but hey, at least it helps to give you some perspective on the quality of the default motion control schemes...
I'm happy that now exist a Scott's Stash video on Mario Kart Wheels, but I'm also sad that this might be the last Scott's Stash video on Mario Kart Wheels Hopefully 5 years from now we might get a remake
I remember playing Mario Kart Wii with my cousin back then, every time he used the Wii Wheel and I always said "Hey man, are you sure you want to use the Wii Wheel and not the GameCube Controller?" And yet he still went with the Wii Wheel and he always wondered why he lost.
In my friends group we preferred the Wiimote not in wheel vs in. And yes when figured out the nunchuck worked it was a game changer. Far less fighting over GC controllers.
Isn't the GameCube controller kinda unconventional? Especially since tricking is mapped to the goddamn D-pad for no reason? I just feel WiiMote and Nunchuck is the most conventional
@@roderickbawcutt I feel like he could get at least a 40 minute video out of if, because he would first have to explain the origin of the alphabet and why Nintendo specifically chose that letter (and not a number). It'd also include the origin of the placement of the button, etc
I remember the day when my parents, for the beginning of the school year, bought the family a Wii and Mario kart to go with it. Truly one of the best moments of my childhood.
I like watching Scott’s stash at night, it just has more of a feeling where it is like he’s talking directly to you, probably because of the lack of a ton of editing like the usual vids
Personally, I'm waiting for Mario Takes the Train, the eco friendly, accessible sequel franchise - comes with an accessory smart card that you can tap to the console's NFC reader to pay the fare
Appreciate that you took to the time to add more game footage and pictures to emphasis on some conversation to your videos on this channel more omg. I didn't mind the style of just a handcam with minimum editing at all (I could listen to Scott rambling anything tbh) but I commend you effort despite this being a side "free talk" channel
Whenever I play Mario Kart Wii with friends, it’s a race to get to either the GameCube controller or the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, no one wants to be left with the motion controls, doesn’t matter if it has the wheel or not.
Funfact: There's another, non listed in this video, official steering wheel made by Nintendo It's the Labo Steering wheel. It's also compatible with Mario Kart and Grid, oddly enough.
I actually bought the joycon wheels at their launch specifically for them improving the triggers of the sideways joycon when I played multiplayer at school. Ended up getting rid of them once I got a second set of joycon to take on the go, but seeing them here just unlocked so many memories
I feel like it's impossible to understand how cool the Wii wheel was if you weren't there when it happened. It's easy enough to explain how it was a novelty and a big gimmick (in a good way), but it's very hard to convey the excitement that came with this plastic circle - it's very much a "if you don't understand I don't think I can explain" thing. I don't care about any subsequent wheels, but god do I want a Wii wheel. I don't even own a single Mario kart game. But I want that damn wheel. It's so iconic
I just got out of the hospital! And my grandparents died 17 days apart! And this was awaiting me as I was home just crazy how time flies and I really didn't know what was going on besides a lot! This game represents a part of my childhood that I can vaguely remember about the game. And more about my actual life.
I don't. That hardware sucked, and I can play every game from that era that I cared about on better consoles. Except Mario Party 8 and Wii Sports Resort.
I actually got a pair of Wii Wheels years before I got Mario Kart. They were found at a yard sale along with a pair of Wii Zappers. After a while, there were threats to get rid of them, but I insisted they stay. A year or so later, I won an auction and got Mario Kart 8. First game I ever bought at auction. I almost always use a Wii Wheel for Mario Kart, for better or for worse. The ergonomics are just that good!
I remember as a kid, I never had an official Wii Wheel. Instead, my family got some kind of third-party wheels alongside some of those dumb Wii Sports peripherals, and those were what we used for Mario Kart, since our copy was a rental from our local Movie Gallery (we eventually bought the game from the store when it closed down). I can't remember who made the wheels, but they had a split top, pink hand grips, and I think even an IR port.
9:37 this was something as a kid that really messed me up after playing mario kart wii, i thought that the controls were the same, and almost snapped my 3ds in half trying to shake the console to do a trick
15:55 I think it was because at the time of the Switch's launch they were really honing in on the fact you could play 2 player anywhere with one system.
Man this brings me back to when I had the dreamGear Wii wheel. It mounted to a table and the base was blue and the wheel was red. That was my main method of playing the Speed Racer game for the Wii and then it came back into action when I started to play Mario Kart 8. The Wii Wheel is probably my favorite Wii peripheral.
The joycon-wheel might actually be nice for "regular" side-ways joycon use like scott mentioned! l dont really play like that anymore but around the launch when fewer of my friends had their own switches it would probably have been more comfortable to play them in those holders rather than with/without the little clasp nintendo provided. huh
I was one of the few hundred people who actually used the Joy-Con to play online. I ended up getting a used set from GameStop since I said I used tilt controls. I didn't know at the time that I could use the Pro Controller/Joy-Con grip as the wheel. I spent over 3 years playing Mario Kart with the Joy Con wheel. Lmao.
I 100% completed Mario Kart Wii using the wheel. One of my best gaming accomplishments. I only use it when I play Mario Kart Wii. Happy to have that Gold Wheel Icon on my menu. Haha.
On the topic of stache: I don't think there's enough discussion of the split that happened in Nintendo's brand image of Mario back with Paper Mario. Paper Mario depicts Mario's moustache as brown, matching his hair (as it should be!), and it also depicts the bill of his hat as brown as well. I prefer these changes. Nobody has brown hair and a black moustache. Also, Scott, why don't you have a stache? Definitely need one to be posting here.
One of my favourite things abt Mario Kart Wii is that the online mode allowed you to lie about using motion controls. You had a preset set of phrases you could say before a race, and one of them was "I‘m using motion controls!", which i LOVED spamming with my Gamecube controller 😌
Seen the 3DS/Joycons wheels, did surprise me when I first saw them going what why! I think the plastic buttons do help for sure by the look. The Hori (proper) wheel peripheral with Mario stuff on it was hilarious to watch someone review as to me it doesn't work as well for Mario Kart as motion controls do especially with an automated control scheme compared to other racing games (Gear Club Unlimited 1&2 and Need for Speed are arcade racers, open world racing games are arcade ones to my knowledge don't know a single simulation one, Grid Autosport, WRC, MotoGP, Ride, Gran Turismo, Forza, in the PC space iRacing, no idea about Assetto Corsa but I know people were annoyed at Project Cars being different but to me it was a case of it being a Need For Speed Shift 3 which Shift was more simulation but PC3 is a bit more arcadey in content and feel than 1&2, they are more your simulation type racing games to compare. There isn't many arcade racers these days though unless you go Indie nostalgia ones (Outrun clones, of may Ridge Racer like ones) or your big name NFS/Forza Horizon, The Crew, TrackMania and such) on Switch. But Wii U always had Need For Speed Most Wanted and that was about the most major you were getting. It looks better and higher quality than the PS2 one that's smaller but similar purpose that I have a Tru Blu wheel. Then again the Wii U has no Project Cars 1 on it that was cancelled that port so otherwise it was good for kart racers, certain arcadey (your wave race/jet ski style, 3DS got Outrun and many bike games or Spy Hunter being a more vehicular combat game), and futuristic ones that was about it. I guess F1 the cartoony one was there and some arcade top down ones exist that are very retro style but no MotoGP/WRC at all or Sim of other games known from the era. Even the 3DS had one WRC, Ridge Racer, Driver Renegade and Asphalt 3D are apparently bad, a F1 2011 (Vita had 3, 4 & 5 but still compared to the Switch having many entries). I prefer Wii over 7 though to play though if I had a working Double Dash I'd say that but I have a dead copy. For feel of controls for content not sure. I think plastic/peripherals did it for sure. I think 'actual peripherals' than plastic shells is better but still the illusion works. You would pretend to drive with the wheel for sure as a kid or understanding a controller. Ah how we prefer to play not have things automated. XD I find tilting motion controls not that possible in racing games. I think Mario Kart Wii did it well though, from my tests with Need For Speed Nitro on Wii, Gear Club Unlimited 2 on Switch or Gran Turismo 5 onwards with Sixaxis/Dualshock 3s for PS3 and GT Sport on PS4 Dualshock 4s I just can't do it, it doesn't work well for those arcadey or simulation physics/feel for those games unfortunately. Driving to me is boring IRL regardless of speed signs (gamer first, not into cars but knowledgeable from games aspects about cars. Gran Turismo 3 and Project Gotham Racing 2&3 are my favourite physics in games, but do they have the most realistic physics no they don't even if one is simulation in its tagline it's fun enough assists on and off, tossing a rally car is more fun then other entries or even WRC games for me. The other an arcadey racer with city custom tracks that are well designed and gameplay mode type approach (and Geometry Wars because why not in there) with Driveclub being the closest successor to that) I think real world physics suck over video game physics in simulators and arcadey racing games and I'm not big on most of the maybe 20+ I've played. Driving slower cars is fine in a video game, fast ones vary in fun if the physics are good (i.e. GT3) in real life it doesn't feel great at all for weight, pedals, steering, any of it for the slower cars (I hate Sedans to drive IRL so I go for Hatches IRL but even still they are the least annoying for me to drive). Driving in a simulation or arcade (I find kart racers boring or the AI cheat) is more fun. I've played Mario Kart Wii and 7 and they are....... Fine. I prefer other racing games or on the Wii especially Need for Speed Nitro or GT Pro Series (Ubisoft published and made the wheel for that game and others I think, otherwise MTO made good racing games) but still I get why it was popular, I personally find the games fine the feel isn't as fun as Crash Team Racing one of the few kart Racers I can stand (prefer F Zero or WipEout or Redout instead) for me but still.
i've been playing mario kart wii online lately, it's absolutely amazing that the community is still active to this day, despite the games servers being down for at least 8 years. that game is absolutely legendary. anyone who played it growing up has to hop back online it's such a nostalgia trip
I always used the nunchuck in MKW, but my brothers both had wheels. We had the official one, that came with the game, and a random third party wheel (by gamexpert). I actually preferred the third party wheel whenever I did use the wheel, it was just bigger and more comfortable in my hands.
I accidentally clicked on scotts stash and thought I was in the main channel, and I saw this video and clicked on it thinking it was a new scott upload. it took me about 10 minutes before I realized it was a scott's stash video.
I have a third party one that's bigger and personally I find it more comfortable, you can also use the Nunchuck with it, there's a connection that you open, put the Wii Remote in, close it, amd then there's a lid in the back that you pop off and plug your Nunchuck. I don't why anyone would do it, but you can.
When I first played Mario Kart Wii in 2009, I always used the Wii Wheel because I just thought it looked cool. A few years later I just used the Wii Remote on its side and thought it actually worked way better (it also helped that I actually got good at the game). Then in high school I switched over to the Wiimote and Nunchuck and haven’t looked back since.
I've always loved how ridiculously low-tech Nintendo's solutions always are to showing player indicator lights. Just four little LEDs on each joycon. The joycon grips just have little bits of clear plastic that let the LEDs shine through. And the HORI joycon wheels? They just rely on extra polished plastic to reflect the light from the LEDs.
14:21 and you're just a hunk of flesh and bones, but all us here care. You make amazing videos and many of us will go frantic if you get replaced somehow.
20:17, got one of these for my son's 3rd bday and he loves it. We only use it maybe once a month but if you want a real challenge, play F-Zero 99 with it.
❗️My Timestamps: 0:23 I had a (unofficial) Black Wii Wheel. Used it a few times and never again. 21:55 Real-style racing was the reason I left the Wii and went PS3 from 2010 to 2017.
